The 2012 Canadian Soccer League season (known as the Givova Canadian Soccer League for sponsorship reasons) was the 15th since its establishment where a total of 28 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on 5 May 2012, and concluded on 27 October 2012. Toronto Croatia defended their championship in a 1–0 victory over the Montreal Impact Academy in the CSL Championship final at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto. [1] Montreal became the second Quebec club after Trois-Rivières Attak to reach the final, while Toronto added more silverware to their cabinet by winning the double during the regular season. In the Second Division SC Toronto B won their first Second Division championship, and TFC Academy II secured the regular season title.

Contents

The league grew to a record amount of 16 first division teams with Kingston, Waterloo, and Niagara being promoted to the first division. [2] A number of CSL teams began operating their academy teams in the Canadian Academy of Futbol (CAF). [3] During the past three seasons the league's player developmental system made further advances with 27 players moving overseas, and 42 being selected to the Canada national team program. [4] [5] While six TFC Academy players were signed by first team Toronto FC of the Major League Soccer. [6]

Rogers TV continued broadcasting matches for the CSL, while CogecoTV provided coverage to the Niagara and Kingston regions. The league reintroduced their television program This Week in the CSL with producer Alex Bastyovanszky returning to host the program with Rogers TV broadcasting the program. [7]

Changes from 2011

Each team will play an unbalanced schedule of 22 games for the 2012 season. [8]

Teams

A total of 16 teams will contest the league, including 13 from the 2011 season and three expansion teams. [8] The league will feature three expansion teams which started play in last years second division, Kingston FC which joined the CSL as Prospect FC, Niagara United, and SC Waterloo Region formerly known as KW United FC. Capital City F.C. will not return for the 2012 season after failing to renew their league membership. [9]

The annual CSL awards were held at the Mississauga Convention Centre in Mississauga, Ontario on 25 November 2012. [36] The league chose Marin Vucemilovic-Grgic as its MVP, a former 2. HNL player who spearheaded Toronto Croatia's to the best offensive record. [37] Toronto also managed to produce the best defensive record throughout the season, and as a result Antonio Ilic was named the Goalkeeper of the Year. Another Croatian import who played with SC Waterloo Drazen Vukovic received the Golden Boot. While Montreal Impact Academy alumni Maxim Tissot was given the Defender, who later was promoted to the Montreal Impact senior team.[ citation needed ]

SC Toronto developed Jonathan Osorio into the Rookie of the Year, who later was signed by Toronto FC in the MLS. After leading the Windsor Stars to their first postseason appearance since the 2007 season Steve Vagnini was voted the Coach of the Year. Ryan Gauss was honored with the Harry Paul Gauss award for his commitment and allegiance to the league. For the second straight season David Barrie was selected by the CSL Referee Committee as the Referee of the Year. TFC Academy were given their third Fair Play and Respect award for their solid discipline on the field of play.[ citation needed ]

Robin Glover and Enio Perruzza were acknowledged by the league for their continual years of service, and were given the Media and Broadcaster awards. Glover received the Media award for his years of loyalty in producing match reports since the 1995 CNSL season. While Perruzza was given the Broadcaster award for announcing over 3,000 matches throughout a span of 26 years. [ citation needed ]

The CSL fielded 12 teams in its Second Division, all reserve teams of players mostly under 23 years of age. With emphasis on developing the younger players, the league rule allows for a maximum three players and the goalkeeper to be over 23. [38] The teams played a 16-game schedule. The division decreased its membership to 12 teams after Kingston FC, Niagara United, and SC Waterloo were promoted to the First Division, but retained their reserves squad in the Second Division. London City, and Toronto Croatia also withdrew their reserve teams with Windsor Stars entering a reserve squad.

The 2008 Canadian Soccer League season was the 11th since its establishment where a total of 16 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on May 16, 2008, and ended on October 26 with the Serbian White Eagles claiming their first championship by defeating Trois-Rivières Attak 2-1 in a penalty shootout. This was the third consecutive year the White Eagles had reached the CSL finals losing respectively to Italia Shooters in 2006, and to rivals Toronto Croatia in 2007. While during the regular season Italia won their second division title with Trois-Rivières becoming the first Quebec team to claim the National Division title.

The 2009 Canadian Soccer League season was the 12th since its establishment where a total of 17 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on May 15, 2008, and ended on October 24 where for the second straight season the Serbian White Eagles faced Trois-Rivières Attak at the CSL Championship. The Attak denied Serbia their championship title by defeating them 3-2 in a penalty shootout. The victory marked the organizations first championship title, and the return of the championship to Quebec since the 1978 season when Montreal Castors competed in the National Soccer League. Throughout the regular season both Serbia, and Trois-Rivieres won their respective divisions.

The 2010 Canadian Soccer Leagueseason was the 13th since its establishment where a total of 24 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on Saturday May 8, 2010, and ended on October 31. Brantford Galaxy SC won their first championship in their inaugural season with a 3–0 win over Hamilton Croatia in the CSL Championship Final at the Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto on October 31, 2010. The CSL administration restructured the league by combining both the International & National divisions to form the CSL First Division with a single table structure. The regular season title was claimed by the York Region Shooters, while the Serbian White Eagles Res. won their first reserve league championship.

CF Montréal Academy is a soccer academy based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They are the academy of Major League Soccer club CF Montréal. Founded in 2010, they operated a team in the Canadian Soccer League from 2010 to 2012. Their U-23 team played in the USL Premier Development League in 2014.

Mississauga Eagles FC were a Canadian professional soccer team founded in 2010 that played in the Canadian Soccer League for two seasons. The Eagles were owned and operated by the Erin Mills Soccer Club and played at the Mississauga Hershey Field in the city of Mississauga, Ontario. In 2013, Erin Mills SC withdrew their franchise from the league after the CSA no longer decided to sanction the CSL.

Niagara United SC is a Canadian soccer team founded in 1973. The club is a former member of the Canadian Soccer League (CSL), where it fielded a professional team from 2011-2015, and now operates youth teams in the Niagara Soccer League and Hamilton Soccer League. The team plays its home games in Kalar Sports Park in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 2011, the club joined the CSL and played in the CSL Second Division. After a successful debut season Niagara was promoted to the First Division, and qualified for the playoffs in their first season in the top flight. The following season the club went through a rebuilding stage focusing on developing and recruiting local players. In 2016, Niagara announced its departure from the league.

The team was awarded a franchise in 2011 as a member of the Canadian Soccer League, and participated in the league for three seasons, 2012 to 2014. In February 2015, Kingston FC formally announced that it had withdrawn from the Canadian Soccer League for the 2015 season. Furthermore, the Club announced that it had made application to the new League1 Ontario for a new professional team that will play in Belleville, Ontario.

SC Waterloo Region is a professional Canadian soccer team that plays in the Canadian Soccer League, a non-FIFA-sanctioned league. The club was formed in 2011 under the name KW United FC and competed in the Second Division of the CSL. The following year the organization's name was changed to SC Waterloo Region and was promoted to the First Division. Within a short time Waterloo enjoyed a string of success within the league. Their biggest achievement came in the 2013 season by winning the CSL Championship, and reaching the championship match finals once more in 2015 only to lose to Toronto Croatia. In 2016, the organization voluntarily relegated itself to the CSL Second Division.

The 2014 Canadian Soccer League season was the 17th since its establishment where a total of 20 teams from Ontario took part in the league. The season began on May 24, 2014, and concluded on October 26, 2014. York Region Shooters won their second championship in a 5–4 victory in a penalty shootout over Toronto Croatia in the CSL Championship final held at Esther Shiner Stadium in Toronto. York Region became the second club in the league's history to produce a perfect season, and championship after the Toronto Olympians in the 1999 season.

The 2010 CSL season was the 13th season in York Region Shooters participation in the Canadian Soccer League. The club ended their CSL campaign by claiming their third division title by finishing first in the First Division. In the postseason York Region faced an early departure after a defeat to Toronto Croatia in the preliminary round.

The 2011 CSL season was the 14th season in York Region Shooters participation in the Canadian Soccer League. The club ended their CSL campaign by securing the final postseason berth in the First Division. In the postseason York Region defeated division champions SC Toronto in the preliminary round, but were eliminated from the competition in the following round to Toronto Croatia. While in the Second Division their reserve team clinched a playoff berth after finishing third in the East Conference standings. Kadian Lecky was Vaughan's top goalscorer for the sixth consecutive time scoring a personal record of 15 goals.

The 2012 season was York Region Shooters's 15th season in the Canadian Soccer League. The season witnessed York Region finish in the top five in the First Division since the 2010 season with the fourth highest defensive record. The club qualified for the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season, and defeated the Windsor Stars in the opening round. Their postseason journey came to a conclusion in the second round after a defeat to the Montreal Impact Academy, while their reserve team shared a similar fate in the Second Division playoffs after a loss to Brampton City United B. The top goalscorers for the season were Jason De Thomasis, Aundrae Rollins, and for the record seventh consecutive time Kadian Lecky each with four goals.

The 2013 season was York Region Shooters's 16th season in the Canadian Soccer League. The club returned to the top four by finishing second in the First Division, and finished in the top four with the best offensive, and defensive record. The organization qualified for the playoffs for the 11th consecutive season, but saw an early departure in the preliminary round. Their reserve side managed to also play in the postseason by finishing seventh in the Second Division. Their playoff journey began with victory in the opening round, but were eliminated in the following round. The club`s top goalscorer was Richard West with 19 goals who managed to end Kadian Lecky`s seven year streak.

For the second consecutive season striker Richard West finished as the club's top goalscorer with nine goals.
