The 2021 FIBA U20 European Challengers were international basketball competitions which took place from 19 to 25 July 2021, replacing the cancelled 2021 FIBA U20 European Championship. [1]

Contents

History

The 2020 edition of FIBA U20 European Championship was to be held in Klaipėda, Lithuania, but was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic continued in 2021, the FIBA Europe decided to hold alternative format of competition to replace traditional format of U20 European Championship where 16 or more teams gather in one place.

The 2016 FIBA U20 European Championship Division B was the 12th edition of the Division B of the FIBA U20 European Championship, the second-tier level of the European Under-20 basketball championship. The tournament was played in Chalkida, Greece, from 15 to 24 July 2016. Montenegro won gold by beating Iceland in the final, 78–76. Montenegro, Iceland, and Greece won promotion to Division A.

The 2016 FIBA U18 European Championship was the 33rd edition of the FIBA U18 European Championship. The competition was originally scheduled to take place in Samsun, Turkey, from 30 July to 7 August 2016, but was postponed indefinitely due to the political unrest in the country at the time. On 30 September 2016, FIBA decided that the tournament would take place from 16 to 22 December 2016. The top five teams qualified for the 2017 FIBA Under-19 World Championship.

The 2016 FIBA U16 European Championship Division B was played in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 11 to 20 August 2016. 24 teams participated in the competition. Russia won the tournament for the first time, with Israel finishing second.

The 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, the 18th edition of FIBA's premier international tournament for women's national basketball teams, was held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain from 22 to 30 September 2018. This was the first edition to use the name of FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. After the last edition in 2014, FIBA changed the name of the competition from the FIBA World Championship for Women, in order to align its name with that of the corresponding men's competition.

The EuroBasket 2022 was the 41st edition of the EuroBasket championship organized by FIBA Europe. It was the first since it was agreed it would take place every four years, with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. It was originally scheduled to take place between 2 and 19 September 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics to 2021, it was postponed to September 2022.

The 2018 FIBA U20 European Championship Division B was the 14th edition of the Division B of the FIBA U20 European Championship, the second-tier level of the European Under-20 basketball championship. The tournament was played in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 13 to 22 July 2018.

Twelve teams qualified for the women's basketball at the 2020 Summer Olympics tournament. The host nation and the 2018 World Cup winner qualified. Those two teams, however, had to play in the pre-qualifying and qualifying tournaments and took one of the qualifying spots from those tournaments. Thus, while two of the World Qualifying Tournaments provided quota spots to their three top teams, the other two tournaments provided quota spots only to the top two teams plus either the host nation or the World Cup winner.

The 2020 FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup would have been an international basketball competition to be held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It would have been the sixth edition of the FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup. Sixteen national teams were scheduled to compete in the tournament. It was originally scheduled to take place from 15 to 23 August 2020, but on 12 June, FIBA postponed the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic and options were examined to play in 2021. An official release from FIBA on this event's cancellation has yet to be published.

The 2019 FIBA U20 European Championship Division B was the 15th edition of the Division B of the FIBA U20 European Championship, the second-tier level of the European Under-20 basketball championship. The tournament was played in Matosinhos, Portugal, from 12 to 21 July 2019.

The 2020 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for Women were the three women's basketball tournaments that were contested by 16 national teams, where the top teams earned a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics basketball tournament. It was held from 6 to 9 February 2020.

The 2020 FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments were the four basketball tournaments that were contested by 23 national teams, where the top teams earned a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics basketball tournament. They were originally scheduled to take place from 23 to 28 June 2020 but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to 29 June to 4 July 2021.

The 2022 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships was the 85th such event hosted by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Teams were participating in several levels of competition. The competition also served as qualifications for division placements in the 2023 competition.

The EuroBasket 2025 qualification is a basketball competition that is being played from November 2021 to February 2025, to determine the 20 FIBA Europe member nations who will join the automatically qualified co-hosts Latvia, Cyprus, Finland and Poland at the EuroBasket 2025 finals tournament.

The 2022 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup was the seventh edition of the FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup, the biennial international men's youth basketball championship contested by the U17 national teams of the member associations of FIBA.
