The World Athletics U20 Championships is a biennial world championships for the sport of athletics organised by the World Athletics, contested by athletes in the under-20 athletics age category (19 years old or younger on 31 December in the year of the competition.
The 1500 metres or 1,500-metre run is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately 15⁄16 miles.
Michael Roeger is an Australian T46 athletics competitor. He competed at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics in athletics in middle distance running events. He has won one gold and three bronze medals at the IPC Athletics World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. He won the gold medal in the Men's T46 marathon at 2019 World Para Athletics Championships held as part of the London Marathon in a world record.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a Norwegian middle-distance runner. He won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 1500 metres event, setting the new Olympic and European record. Ingebrigtsen also won two gold medals at the 2018 European Championships, in the 1500 and 5000 metres events. On 10 June 2021, at the Diamond League, Ingebrigtsen set a new European record in the 5000 m with his time of 12:48.45. His older brothers Henrik and Filip are also middle-distance runners who compete internationally. They are trained by their father Gjert Ingebrigtsen. On 12 October 2019, he was the youngest pacemaker in the successful sub-2 hour marathon attempt by Eliud Kipchoge. As of 2021 Jakob is the 8th, 6th, 9th and 12th fastest man over the 1500m, 2000m, 3000m and 5000m respectively. He also holds the distinction of being one of only two men to run a sub-3:30 1500m, sub-7:30 3000m and a sub-12:50 5000m along with 3000m and 2 mile world record holder Daniel Komen.
Selemon Barega Shirtaga is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes primarily in the 5000 metres and 10,000 meters. He won the gold medal at the 10,000 m at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. He represented his country at the 2017 World Championships finishing fifth in the final. He also won gold medals at the 2016 World U20 Championships and 2017 World U18 Championships. He won a silver medal in the men's 5000 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
The men's 1500 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place between 3 and 7 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. Approximately fifty athletes were expected to compete; the exact number depended on how many nations used universality places to enter athletes in addition to the 45 qualifying through time or ranking. 47 competitors from 27 nations competed. Jakob Ingebrigtsen set a new Olympic record on his way to the gold medal, Norway's first medal in the men's 1500 metres. Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya took silver, returning that nation to the podium for the first time since a four-Games medal streak ended in 2008. Josh Kerr earned bronze, Great Britain's first medal in the event since 1988.
