207 East 36th Street is a five-story commercial building located between Second and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The building was constructed in 1906 and originally served as a stable, garage and warehouse for B. Altman and Company. It currently houses the Murray Hill Annex of the United States Postal Service.
In 1905, Benjamin Altman acquired a plot of land near Third Avenue in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan that included 100 feet (30 m) of frontage on East 36th Street and 50 feet (15 m) of frontage on East 37th Street. [2] The following year, plans were prepared for a five-story brick and stone stable on the site. [3] The new structure was located near the B. Altman and Company Building, the company's flagship store that opened in 1906 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street and was expanded through 1914 to occupy a full city block, extending east to Madison Avenue and north to 35th Street. [4] [5]
Until 1906, B. Altman & Company's flagship store had been located on Sixth Avenue between West 18th and 19th streets, in an area containing other large department stores that is now designated as the Ladies' Mile Historic District. [5] A five-story stable located at 135 West 18th Street was used by horse drawn carriages to deliver items purchased by customers; [5] [6] [7] as of 2024 the structure still exists as the Altman Building and includes event space used by the adjacent Metropolitan Pavilion. [7] [8] Some of the large department stores began switching to motorized trucks for deliveries at the turn of the century and B. Altman & Company's fleet of vehicles included electric trucks. [9] B. Altman & Company continued making deliveries in trucks operated by the company until 1931, when shipping was taken over by United Parcel Service. [10]
In 1918, Altman purchased five lots running from 215 to 223 East 36th Street to serve as an addition to the original stable. Overall, this new property measured 97.6 by 98.9 feet (29.7 by 30.1 m). Another lot was purchased adjacent to the north side of the building (No. 204), which increased the frontage on East 37th Street to 75 feet (23 m). [11] [12] [13] That same year, plans were filed for a five-story fireproof garage on the new property acquired on East 36th Street. [14] The new building was subsequently displaced by the construction of the exit plaza for the Queens–Midtown Tunnel, which opened in 1940 and included a new north–south street for exiting traffic between Second and Third avenues, running from East 34th to East 41st streets, with an underpass below East 36th Street. B. Altman and Company sold the original building in 1948, which at the time was being used as a warehouse for the company's furniture and mattress departments, and moved into a new warehouse located at 48–49 35th Avenue in Long Island City. [1] [19] [20] [21] The building was subsequently used as a furniture warehouse and repair factory by John Stuart, Inc. and the United States Postal Service moved into the building by the 1960s, operating the facility as an annex that manually handled parcel post for its Grand Central Station at 450 Lexington Avenue. [1] [22] [23] The property was acquired by the federal government through eminent domain on June 29, 1987. [24]
The building was designed by Trowbridge & Livingston, the same architecture firm that designed the B. Altman and Company Building located on the block bounded by Fifth and Madison avenues and 34th and 35th streets. [3] [4] [5] The façade is made of brick and is five stories high. Brick arched entries are located at the ground level, which contain projecting keystones. The façade contains stone belt courses and window sills as well as recessed window bays with splayed brick lintels and projecting keystones. Brick corbelling is located on the fourth level and the fifth level has a modillioned cornice. [23]
The east wall of the building contains a large billboard visible to motorists exiting the Queens–Midtown Tunnel that for many years contained advertisements by British Airways and was described as something that "became a part of New York culture" and "was impossible to miss for anyone arriving New York at their midtown location." [25] [26]
Murray Hill is a neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan in New York City. Murray Hill is generally bordered to the east by the East River or Kips Bay and to the west by Midtown Manhattan, though the exact boundaries are disputed. 34th Street is a major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It runs the width of Manhattan Island from the West Side Highway on the West Side to FDR Drive on the East Side. 34th Street is used as a crosstown artery between New Jersey to the west and Queens to the east, connecting the Lincoln Tunnel to New Jersey with the Queens–Midtown Tunnel to Long Island.
B. Altman and Company was a luxury department store and chain, founded in 1865 in New York City, New York, by Benjamin Altman. Its flagship store, the B. Altman and Company Building at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan, operated from 1906 until the company closed the store at the end of 1989. Branch stores were all shuttered by the end of January 1990.

The parish was established in 1955. In 2015, the parish was renamed Our Saviour and St. Stephen/Our Lady of the Scapular after it merged with the parish of St. Stephen/Our Lady of the Scapular. 390 Fifth Avenue, also known as the Gorham Building, is an Italian Renaissance Revival palazzo-style building at Fifth Avenue and West 36th Street in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, United States. It was designed by McKim, Mead & White, with Stanford White as the partner in charge, and built in 1904–1906. The building was named for the Gorham Manufacturing Company, a major manufacturer of sterling and silverplate, and was a successor to the former Gorham Manufacturing Company Building at 889 Broadway. The building features bronze ornamentation and a copper cornice.
The Madison Belmont Building, also known as 183 Madison Avenue, is a commercial building at the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and 34th Street in Murray Hill, Manhattan, New York. It was designed by Warren & Wetmore in the Neoclassical style and built in 1924–1925. The Madison Belmont Building has a "transitional" design that deviates from Warren & Wetmore's other commissions, combining elements of the Neoclassical style and more modern influences from the Art Deco style.

Kips Bay Brewing Company, also known as Kips Bay Brewing and Malting Co. and Patrick Skelly Brewery, was a brewery located in Manhattan, New York City, that operated from 1894 to 1947. The former company's buildings have been repurposed into offices and are one of two groups of surviving brewery structures in Manhattan from the period when brewing was a major industry in the city.
333 East 38th Street is a 12-story commercial building in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Located on the west side of First Avenue between East 38th and 39th streets, the building was built in 1928 as a warehouse and distribution hub for the Eleto Company, which provided delivery services for merchandise sold by Lord & Taylor and James McCreery & Company. After the package deliveries for these department stores were contracted to United Parcel Service (UPS) in 1930, UPS became a major tenant in the building and the facility served as the company's corporate headquarters and main depot in the New York metropolitan area. UPS vacated the site in 1964 and since then the building has mostly been used as commercial and medical office space. It currently houses NYU Langone Health's Orthopedic Center and Outpatient Surgery Center.
The George S. Bowdoin Stable is a historic building located at 149 East 38th Street between Lexington and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Designed by Ralph S. Townsend, the structure was originally constructed in 1902 as a private horse stable for William R. H. Martin. Over the years, it has accommodated a variety of other uses, including a garage, private residence, art gallery, cultural center, and office.
The Jonathan W. Allen Stable is a historic building located at 148 East 40th Street between Lexington and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Designed and built by Charles E. Hadden, the structure was originally constructed in 1871 as a private horse stable for Jonathan W. Allen. It was later converted to accommodate commercial uses and has been designated as a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Kips Bay Generating Station was a steam plant in Manhattan, New York City, that operated from 1926 until 1987. The facility was located in the Murray Hill neighborhood on the east side of First Avenue between East 35th and 36th streets, alongside the East River. Originally built by the New York Steam Corporation, the plant produced steam for the New York City steam system and was later operated by Consolidated Edison after merger of the companies. The steam plant was demolished from 1987 to 1994. As part of the decommissioning and sale of Con Edison's nearby Waterside Generating Station in 2005, the former site of the Kips Bay Generating Station was sold to a private developer, remediated, and redeveloped into high-rise apartments and a school.
