The United States Air Force's 225th Combat Communications Squadron was an Air National Guard combat communications unit located at Martin Air National Guard Station, Gadsden, Alabama.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial and space warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is one of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially formed as a part of the United States Army on 1 August 1907, the USAF was established as a separate branch of the U.S. Armed Forces on 18 September 1947 with the passing of the National Security Act of 1947. It is the youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and the fourth in order of precedence. The USAF is the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world. The Air National Guard (ANG), also known as the Air Guard, is a federal military reserve force as well as the militia air force of each U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the territories of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It, along with each state's, district's, commonwealth's or territory's Army National Guard component, makes up the National Guard of each state and the districts, commonwealths and territories as applicable.

Gadsden is a city in and the county seat of Etowah County in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located on the Coosa River about 56 miles (90 km) northeast of Birmingham and 90 miles (140 km) southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is the primary city of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 103,931. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 36,856, with an estimated population of 35,837 in 2016. Gadsden and Rome, Georgia, are the largest cities in the triangular area now defined by the interstate highways between Atlanta, Birmingham, and Chattanooga.

History

The 225 CBCS was initially organized in March 1953 as the 225th Radio Relay Squadron, in Greenville, Mississippi, Mississippi, as part of the Mississippi Air National Guard. The unit was formally organized on 18 June 1954, and was eventually transferred to the Alabama Air National Guard and relocated to Gadsden. On 22 February 1971, an element of the 225th was divested and reorganized as the Headquarters, 226th Mobile Communications Group. (The 226th eventually became the 226th Combat Communications Group.) The new Group was co-located on Martin Air National Guard Station with the 225th. On 1 October 1960, the 225 RRS was realigned under the Military Air Transport Service. The 226 CCG headquarters relocated to Abston Air National Guard Station in February 1996. The 225 CBCS was inactivated in April 2008.

The Military Air Transport Service (MATS) is an inactive Department of Defense Unified Command. Activated on 1 June 1948, MATS was a consolidation of the United States Navy's Naval Air Transport Service (NATS) and the United States Air Force's Air Transport Command (ATC) into a single joint command. It was inactivated and discontinued on 8 January 1966 when the Air Force and Military Airlift Command (MAC) as a separate strategic airlift command and returned shore-based Navy cargo aircraft to Navy control as operational support airlift (OSA) aircraft.
