AFC Club Competitions Ranking

The AFC Club Competitions Ranking is a ranking system launched by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2014.^[1] The ranking is based on the results of teams participating in the last four years of the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup. The ranking is used for determine slot allocation for the AFC member associations in its club competitions.

Calculation principle

The Club Competitions Ranking (former Member Association Ranking, or MA ranking) is used to rank associations and also used for seeding teams in the competitions. It is also used to allocate the number of entries and entry points to the competitions.^[2]^[3] There are, however, many shifts each year with associations not meeting off field requirements.

Each team is awarded points based on their performance in AFC club competitions. Points earned of a country in a season consists of two parts. First, the points earned in group and knockout stages by all clubs from the country will be divided by the number of participating clubs in that tournament (points from AFC Champions League teams and AFC Cup teams are counted and averaged separately, then added to each other). Second, the points earned from qualifying stages (if any). Points earned by all clubs from the country in two parts are added up to be the country's points for the season.

The ranking consists of the total of points of member association's clubs over the past four years. The leading association's points earned are made 100 points in percentage terms. All other associations are adjusted proportionally to the leading team.

New ranking structure

The AFC have announced changes in the format for ACL and AFC Cup, splitting into 3 competitions from 2024/25.^[9]

The structure has taken into account the results from the past 8 years (with a weighting formula).^[10] The published ranking has not taken account all criteria stated in previous announcement by AFC such as:

The MAs' final points will be based on the average performance of all clubs in the AFC Club Competitions Group Stage onwards.^[9]
The MAs' final points will be applied retroactively for re-calculation of the MAs' 2021 and 2022 points.^[9]

Club ranking

A club ranking was introduced in 2014 by the AFC.^[11] It was an informative ranking and not used to seed clubs in the club competitions.^[12]

The OFC has 13 members, 11 of which are full members and two which are associate members not affiliated with FIFA. It promotes the game in Oceania and allows the member nations to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The Asian Football Confederation is the governing body of association football, beach football, and futsal in some countries/territories in Asia and Oceania. It has 47 member countries most of which are located in Asia. Australia, formerly in OFC, joined AFC in 2006. Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, both territories of the United States, are also AFC members that are geographically in Oceania. The Asian Ladies Football Confederation (ALFC) was the section of AFC who managed women's association football in Asia. The group was independently founded in April 1968 in a meeting involving Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. In 1986 ALFC merged with AFC.

The AFC Champions League is an annual continental club football competition organised by the Asian Football Confederation, and contested by Asia's top-division football clubs. It is the most prestigious club competition in Asian football, played by the national league champions of their national associations.

In European football, the UEFA coefficients are statistics based in weighted arithmetic means used for ranking and seeding teams in club and international competitions. Introduced in 1979 for men's football tournaments, and after applied in women's football and futsal, the coefficients are calculated by UEFA, who administer football within Europe, as well as Armenia, Israel and the Asian parts of some transcontinental countries.

The CAF 5-Year Ranking system is used by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to determine the number of clubs that each member association may enter its club football competitions; the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. At present, those associations ranked in the top 12 may enter two teams into each of the two club competitions, while the remaining associations are limited to a single team in each competition.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification was the qualifying process which decided the 31 teams that would join hosts Qatar, who received an automatic spot, at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 2015 AFC Champions League was the 34th edition of Asia's premier club football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the 13th under the current AFC Champions League title.

The 2014 AFC Champions League was the 33rd edition of the top-level Asian club football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the 12th under the current AFC Champions League title. Guangzhou Evergrande were the defending champions, but were eliminated by Western Sydney Wanderers in the quarter-finals.

The 2019 AFC Champions League was the 38th edition of Asia's premier club football tournament, organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the 17th under the current AFC Champions League title.

The tournament was held from 3 to 12 February 2022 in the United Arab Emirates.

The 2023–24 AFC Champions League will be the 42nd edition of Asia's premier club football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the 21st under the current AFC Champions League title.

The 2022–23 CAF Champions League was the 59th season of Africa's premier club football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the 27th and last edition under the current CAF Champions League title.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be the 21st edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, an international club association football competition organized by FIFA. The tournament is planned to be the first under an expanded format with 32 teams and will be held in June and July 2025. A previous proposal to expand the tournament to 24 teams in China in 2021 had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
