Acharya Dev Vrat (born 18 January 1959) is an Indian politician serving as the Governor of Gujarat since July 2019. He was arya samaj pracharak and served previously as the principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Haryana. [2] [3] [4] [1]

<i>Gurukula</i>

A gurukula or gurukulam was a type of education system in ancient India with shishya living near or with the guru, in the same house. The guru-shishya tradition is a sacred one in Hinduism and appears in other religious groups in India, such as Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. The word gurukula is a combination of the Sanskrit words guru and kula. Before the arrival of British rule, they served as South Asia's primary educational system. The term is also used today to refer to residential monasteries or schools operated by modern gurus. The proper plural of the term is gurukulam, though gurukulas and gurukuls are also used in English and some other Western languages.

Kurukshetra City in Haryana, India

Kurukshetra is a city in the state of Haryana, India. It is also known as Dharmakshetra and as the "Land of the Bhagavad Gita". Kurukshetra lies at distance of 160 km from New Delhi and about 93 km from Chandigarh - city with the nearest airport.

Being the Governor of Gujarat, he is also the Chancellor of state universities of Gujarat.

He has been the principal of the Gurukul since 1981. The institution is run by Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Rohtak, without any financial aid from the government,

He has served as a mentor, guardian, principal and warden of Gurukul kurukshetra since 1980s. He was known for his honesty, discipline, punctuality in his daily life.

Dev Vrat completed his post-graduation in Hindi from Panjab University in 1984. He has been working for a pollution free environment. He has been closely associated with campaigns against female foeticide and the "Beti Padhao-Beti Bacahao" campaign. He has travelled to Europe and South East Asia for propagating Indian culture

Dev Vrat said on his appointment day "Good gurukuls would be opened in Himachal so that the future generation could learn Indian culture and feel honored."

About Ramdev's role in his appointment, he had said: "He has always been a guide and his blessings are with me. Gurukul is my family as I have spent 34 years of my life there. I feel it was the result of my hard work that has given me this opportunity."

As a first administrative act of its kind in the history of Himachal Pradesh, Dev Vrat has initiated steps for directly taking up social issues including drug abuse and intolerance. The governor held a meeting with senior bureaucrats from the state administration to monitor the steps taken to check these social evils on 3 November 2015. As per the Constitution of India, the Governor of a state acts through the Council of Ministers who are the elected representatives of the people of the state. [5]

In June 2019, he was named as Governor of Gujarat replacing Om Prakash Kohli. [6]

Om Prakash Kohli is the former Governor of Gujarat and a former member of Rajya Sabha. He was president of the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1999-2000. He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2000. He has been the president of the Delhi University Teacher's Association (DUTA) and of the ABVP. He studied at Ramjas School and Khalsa School, New Delhi. Kohli is a Master of Arts in Hindi from the University of Delhi and was a lecturer at Hansraj College and Deshbandhu College for over 37 years. He was arrested under MISA during the Emergency. From 8 September 2016 to 19 January 2018, he held the additional charge of the office of Governor of Madhya Pradesh along with Gujarat.He is also designated as the Chancellor of Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar.
