The Church of Nigeria is the Anglican church in Nigeria. It is the second-largest province in the Anglican Communion, as measured by baptised membership, after the Church of England. As of 2016 it gives its membership as "over 18 million", out of a total Nigerian population of 190 million. It is "effectively the largest province in the Communion." As measured by active membership, the Church of Nigeria has nearly 2 million active baptised members. According to a study published by Cambridge University Press in the Journal of Anglican Studies, there are between 4.94 and 11.74 million Anglicans in Nigeria. The Church of Nigeria is the largest Anglican province on the continent of Africa, accounting for 41.7% of Anglicans in Sub-Saharan Africa, and is "probably the first [largest within the Anglican Communion] in terms of active members."
The Church of the Province of West Africa is a province of the Anglican Communion, covering 17 dioceses in eight countries of West Africa, specifically in Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Senegal and Sierra Leone. Ghana is the country with most dioceses, now numbering 11.
The Anglican Diocese on the Niger is the mother diocese of the Church of Nigeria. It is one of 10 Anglican dioceses in the Anglican Province of the Niger within the Church of Nigeria. The diocese was created in 1864 as the Diocese of Western Equatorial Africa. In 1920 the Diocese of Equatorial West Africa was divided into two: an eastern part and a western part. Adeniyi was the pioneer Bishop of Egba Diocese when it was created in 1976. On his retirement aged 70 in 1979, he was succeeded by Titus Ilori Akintayo, who served from 1980 until 1994. On his retirement, he was in turn succeeded by Matthew Oluremi Owadayo. Adekunle has been the Bishop since 2009.
The Anglican Diocese of Ifo is one of the 13 Dioceses within the Anglican Province of Lagos, itself one of the 14 provinces within the Church of Nigeria. The pioneer Bishop, the Rt. Rev'd J. Akin. Odejide retired in October 2012 and the current Bishop is the Rt. Rev'd Nathaniel Oladejo Ogundipe. The diocese was created from the Diocese of Egba and inaugurated on 12 March 2007.
The Anglican Diocese of Ijebu is one of 13 within the Anglican Province of Lagos, itself one of 14 provinces within the Church of Nigeria. The last bishop, Ezekiel Ayo Awosoga died in 2020. The current bishop is Peter Rotimi Oludipe; he was consecrated a bishop on 21 September 2020 at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Abuja; he is the fifth bishop diocesan.
