Area codes 610, 484, and 835 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the eastern and southeastern regions of Pennsylvania. The numbering plan area (NPA) includes regions to the west of Philadelphia and the cities Allentown, Bethlehem, and Reading. It includes much of the Delaware Valley, including almost all of Delaware County, most of the Philadelphia Main Line, and all of the Lehigh Valley.
Area code 610 was assigned on January 8, 1994, in an area code split from numbering plan area 215, which had been the entire southeast quadrant of Pennsylvania since 1947. Permissive dialing of both 215 and 610 continued until the morning of January 7, 1995. [1] It was Pennsylvania's first new area code since the definition of the area code system in 1947.
Three exchanges which would have switched to 610 were instead switched to 717, the area code for most of the eastern half of the state outside of the lower Delaware and Lehigh Valleys. The central office prefixes were 267 at Denver, 445 at Terre Hill, and 484 at Adamstown with 267 being renumbered as 717-336 because 717-267 was already in use at Chambersburg. These exchanges were all served by independent, non-Bell telephone companies, which sought to consolidate their eastern Pennsylvania customers into one area code and would have had to change area codes regardless.
This was intended as a long-term solution, but further growth in the region over the subsequent five years, and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers, spurred the introduction of area code 484 as an overlay for the 610 region on June 5, 1999, along with the introduction of mandatory ten-digit dialing. Area code 835 was intended as an additional code for the 610/484 overlay, as announced by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission in May 2000, and to be implemented in 2001. However, newly developed, more efficient number pooling measures were introduced instead, eliminating the immediate need for the new area code. The Commission formally withdrew plans for the new code on June 23, 2005, although the code remained reserved for later use within Pennsylvania if necessary. [3] Area code 835 was eventually approved by the Public Utility Commission on December 2, 2021. Assignment of central office codes in the new area code began on September 2, 2022. [4]
When area codes were introduced in 1947, their middle digit was either 0 or 1. In 1994, area code 610 was the last area code assigned with digit 1 in that position. The next new area codes assigned in 1995 (334 in Alabama, and 360 in Washington state) were the first interchangeable area codes.
In 1962, AT&T assigned NPA 610 for conversion to dial service of the Teletypewriter Exchange Service in Canada. [5] [6] While Telex II use of area codes was terminated in 1981 in the U.S. by Western Union, Canadian use of 610 continued until October 31, 1993, when it was exchanged in a flash cut for area code 600 for non-geographic applications. Northampton County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 312,951. Its county seat is Easton. The county was formed in 1752 from parts of Bucks County. Its namesake was the county of Northamptonshire in England, and the county seat of Easton was named for Easton Neston, a country house in Northamptonshire.
Area codes 213, 323, and 738 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the U.S. state of California. They are assigned in an overlay complex to a numbering plan area (NPA) that comprises, roughly, the area of downtown Los Angeles City, as well as several southeast Los Angeles County cities, such as Bell and Huntington Park. Area code 213 was one of the original North American area codes of 1947 and 323 was created in an area code split of 213 on June 13, 1998. This was the fifth split of 213 and left it serving only downtown Los Angeles and immediately adjoining neighborhoods. In 2017, the two NPAs were recombined in the overlay.
Area code 564 is a telephone overlay area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for Western Washington state, including metropolitan Seattle. The area code was first proposed in 1999 to relieve telephone number shortages in area code 360, but implementation was delayed until 2017, when it was installed for an overlay complex that comprises only the numbering plan area 360. Neighboring area codes 206, 253, and 425 were slated for expansion of the overlay upon exhaustion of central office codes in each NPA. In 2023, area code 206 was approved for expansion with a guide line for preparation of inclusion of at least nine months. Ten-digit dialing has been mandatory in all of western Washington since July 29, 2017.
Area codes 909 and 840 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan for the far-eastern part of Los Angeles County, southwestern San Bernardino County, and a small portion of Riverside County in the U.S. state of California. Area code 909 was created on November 14, 1992, in an area code split of 909, and 840 was added to the numbering plan area to form an overlay complex effective February 23, 2021. While most of western Riverside County now uses Area code 951, some residents in Eastvale and Corona were allowed to keep the 909 area code after the split in 2004.
Area codes 203 and 475 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Connecticut. The numbering plan area (NPA) is mostly coextensive with the Connecticut portion of the New York metropolitan area, and comprises most of Fairfield County, all of New Haven County, and a small portion of Litchfield County.
Area codes 813 and 656 are area codes in the North American Numbering Plan for the U.S. state of Florida in the city of Tampa, Florida, and its surrounding areas, such as Zephyrhills and Oldsmar.
