The Warrego Highway passes to the north, the Mitchell Highway to the west, and the Balonne Highway to the south. [3]

The locality was named and bounded on 28 March 2002. [2]

There are no schools in Boatman. The nearest government primary school is Morven State School in neighbouring Morven to the north. The nearest government secondary schools are Charleville State High School in Charleville to the north-west and Mitchell State High School in Mitchell to the north-east.
