Brookdale Farm is a former Thoroughbred breeding and training farm located at 805 Newman Springs Road in the Lincroft section of Middletown Township in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Thomas Lloyd acquired the property in the late 18th century. [1] In 1872, David Dunham Withers established the horse breeding and training operation. By 1889, the farm included 838 acres (3.39 km2). In 1968, 215 acres (0.87 km2) of the farm were bequeathed by Geraldine Morgan Thompson to the county to create Thompson Park. [2] [3]

History

In 1774, Thomas Lloyd bought 200 acres (0.81 km2) along the north bank of the Swimming River. By 1786, he had built a large house here. The acreage had increased to 316 acres (1.28 km2) by 1798. After his death in 1812, the property was divided and passed through several owners. In 1872, David Dunham Withers, active in the horse racing industry, bought 200 acres (0.81 km2) for his Brookdale Stable. In 1893, William Payne Thompson purchased the property. His son, Lewis, married Geraldine Morgan Thompson in 1896. They became full owners of the property by 1899. [2]

The Brookdale Farm Historic District is a 228-acre (0.92 km2) historic district encompassing the core part of the farm. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 9, 2020, for its significance in agriculture, architecture and entertainment/recreation from 1786 to 1932. The district has 19 contributing buildings and one contributing site. Thomas Lloyd built his Georgian house in 1786. It was renovated and expanded in Colonial Revival style by Harry Whitney in 1914. The Lloyd Barn was likely built in the 18th century. It was later upgraded by Geraldine Thompson. The two-story Ten Mare Barn was likely built by David Withers in 1883. The two-story, forty-stall Training Stable measures 64 by 296 feet (20 m × 90 m) and is the largest building on the farm. Built starting c.1879, each section features a gabled cupola. [2]

William du Pont Jr. was an English-born American businessman and banker, and a prominent figure in the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing. A member of the Delaware Du Pont family, he was the son of William du Pont and Annie Rogers Zinn, and brother to Marion duPont Scott, a noted horsewoman and breeder. The Swimming River Reservoir is a reservoir in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is located on the border of Colts Neck, Holmdel and Lincroft. The Swimming River ends up in the reservoir, as well as other small tributaries. The reservoir was built in 1901 by the Tintern Water Company to provide fresh water; the dam was replaced in 1958. It is now managed by New Jersey American Water Company and provides drinking water for residents of Monmouth County. The reservoir has a design peak capacity of 159 megalitres per day. All drainage from Colts Neck empties into the reservoir.

Pleasant Valley Road and Reids Hill Road are main roads that pass through the area connecting to Routes 34, 79, and 520. A large part of land which makes up Pleasant Valley was originally granted by the King of England in 1665 to the Rev. Obadiah Holmes. Geraldine Livingston Morgan Thompson (1872–1967) was an American social reform pioneer who became known as the "First Lady of New Jersey" due to her philanthropic and social service activities in New Jersey. Thompson owned Brookdale Farm, an 800-acre (320 ha) estate in Lincroft. In her will, Thompson left 206 acres (83 ha) of the estate to Monmouth County for a public park named for the Thompsons. Thompson Park includes the administrative headquarters of the Monmouth County Park System.

Thompson Park is a public park located at 805 Newman Springs Road in the Lincroft section of Middletown Township, New Jersey. The 677-acre (2.74 km2) park is operated by the Monmouth County Park System. In 1968, at the bequest of Geraldine Morgan Thompson, 215 acres (0.87 km2) of the Brookdale Farm were donated to the county to create the park. The Brookdale Farm Historic District, located in the park, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. The visitor center is a reconstruction of the Thompson Mansion, which was destroyed by a fire in 2006. The original mansion had been remodeled and expanded by the architectural firm of Carrère and Hastings in 1896.
