Sports in Canada consist of a wide variety of games. The roots of organized sports in Canada date back to the 1770s, culminating in the development and popularization of the major professional games of ice hockey, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, soccer, football and cricket. Canada's official national sports are ice hockey and lacrosse. Golf, baseball, tennis, skiing, ringette, badminton, cricket, volleyball, cycling, swimming, bowling, rugby union, canoeing, curling, squash, and the study of martial arts are widely enjoyed at the youth and amateur levels. Great achievements in Canadian sports are recognized by Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, while the Lou Marsh Trophy is awarded annually to Canada's top athlete by a panel of journalists. There are numerous other Sports Halls of Fame in Canada.
The 1999 Pan American Games, officially the XIII Pan American Games or the 13th Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from July 23 to August 8, 1999, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and surrounding towns and cities. Canoeing competitions started the day before the games officially began. Approximately 5,000 athletes from 42 nations participated in the games to vie for a total of 330 medal events in 34 sports and 42 disciplines.
The International Handball Federation (IHF) is the administrative and controlling body for handball and beach handball. IHF is responsible for the organisation of handball's major international tournaments, notably the IHF World Men's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1938, and the IHF World Women's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1957.
Canada, which is represented by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), has competed at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico from October 14 to 30, 2011. The Canadian team was made up of 492 athletes, the most ever for a non-home Games. On the team all ten provinces and the Northwest Territories are represented. Some sports such as wrestling have sent their strongest team, however sports which offer the most medals have sent for the most part a developmental team. Table Tennis player Anqi Luo was Canada's youngest athlete at the Games while Equestrian athlete Ian Millar was Canada's eldest athlete competing in Guadalajara. Canada has competed in 35 out of the 36 sports on the program. On October 4, 2011, women's football star Christine Sinclair was selected to carry the flag during the opening ceremony. The chef de mission was Jacques Cardyn and the assistant chef de mission was Curt Harnett.
The women's tournament of handball at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico will take place from 15 October to 23 October, All games were held at the San Rafael Gymnasium. The defending champions are Brazil, who won the title on home court. The winner of the competition will qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Great Britain.

This is because the Pan American Games were scheduled to be held roughly around the same time as the 2015 World Aquatics Championships scheduled for Kazan, Russia, thus the competition was moved forward to allow for a sufficient gap between the two events. A total of eight men's and women's teams competed in each respective tournament.

Water Polo Canada controls all water polo in the country and is responsible for hosting national championships and fielding national teams. The organization has its headquarters in Ottawa while its men's national team is based in Montreal and its women's national team is based in Montreal.
Handball competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, were held from July 24 to August 5. The venue for the competition is the Sports Centre Hall 1 located at the Videna cluster. The venue also hosted judo. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. This means a total of 224 athletes are competed.

Canada competed at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile from October 20 to November 5, 2023. This was Canada's 18th appearance at the Pan American Games, having competed at every Games since the second edition in 1955. In February 2023, Guadalajara 2011 and London 2012 weightlifting gold medallist Christine Girard was named as the country's Chef De Mission.
