Cartoonito was a British-managed Spanish children's pay television channel which was launched on September 1, 2011, replacing Boomerang. The channel would close on 30 June 2013, due to dwindling TV ratings and the pay TV crisis Spain had at that time as a consequence of the 2008 financial crisis. [1]
The Spanish feed of Boomerang at launch targeted two demographics: preschoolers and parents with children. [2] Over time, the channel started giving more airtime for preschool content. The channel had, by 2008, acquired pay-TV rights to titles such as Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies in 2008 [3] and the stop-motion series Lunar Jim , which in January 2009 premiered a new season. [4]
Cartoonito was launched as a 24-hour channel on 1 September 2011, replacing the Spanish version of Boomerang, as part of Turner Broadcasting System EMEA's plans to roll out the Cartoonito brand across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Its launch was announced in July, and its launch titles included the new CGI series of Bananas in Pyjamas , the Spanish series Jelly Jamm , The Adventures of Chuck and Friends and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic . It also inherited some preschool titles already airing on Boomerang, such as Baby Looney Tunes , The Backyardigans and Dive, Olly, Dive!. [5] 2,6 million households would receive the channel. [6]
Turner Broadcasting System Europe announced on 14 June 2013 that Cartoonito and Cartoon Network would close in Spain on 30 June 2013, due to dwindling TV ratings and the pay TV crisis Spain had at that time as a consequence of the 2008 financial crisis. [7] The channel closed after airing an episode of Bananas in Pyjamas, followed by a channel loop, after which the providers cut off the signal. [8]
