Belmont is a suburb forming the north-eastern parts of the city of Durham, England. Belmont Parish covers four old coal mining villages of Belmont, Carrville, Broomside and Gilesgate Moor, which have been joined by industrial and suburban developments since the 1950s. As such Belmont can be used either to refer narrowly to the old village area, or the wider parish, particularly the parts to the east of the A1(M) motorway which bisects the area. At the 2011 census, the parish had a population of 8,881.

The site is near Tibshelf Ponds and the Five Pits Trail and lies around 2⁄3 mile (1.1 km) south-east of the village of Tibshelf, but the north-bound site is closer to the village of Newton. During the planning of the site it was originally named Chesterfield services, and during its archaeological evaluation Bronze Age flints and pottery were discovered - indicating the potential of Bronze Age enclosures in the surrounding area.

The motorway was constructed during Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's rule and cost over Rs. 60 billion and was opened in November 1997. One of the most expensive motorways in Asia, it also has one of the highest pillared-bridges in Asia at the Khewra Salt Range section.

The M6 motorway is a motorway in Ireland, which runs from Dublin to Galway. The M6 extends from its junction with the M4 at Kinnegad all the way west to the outskirts of Galway City, but the Athlone bypass and the approach to Galway city - while of dual carriageway standard - have not been designated motorway and are still signed as N6. The motorway was officially completed and opened to traffic on 18 December 2009, and was the first city-to-city direct major inter-urban route to be completed in Ireland. The M6 and M4, which form the Galway-Dublin route, consist of a grade-separated 2+2 dual carriageway road with a top speed limit of 120 km/h. At approximately 144 km (90 mi), the M6 is the third longest motorway in the state and will be 159 km.

The MSA will be located on the western side of the motorway between Junctions 48 and 49, with access to both the northbound and southbound carriageways. The planning application has been submitted multiple times between 2001 and 2021.
