Elk is a town in Price County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,183 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau (USCB), the town has a total area of 53.5 square miles (138.7 km2), of which, 50.8 square miles (131.6 km2) is land and 2.7 square miles (7.1 km2) (5.10%) is water.
As of the census [2] of 2000, there were 1,183 people, 502 households, and 365 families residing in the town. The population density was 23.3 people per square mile (9.0/km2). There were 933 housing units at an average density of 18.4 per square mile (7.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.73% White, 0.51% Native American, 0.08% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 0.59% of the population.
There were 502 households, out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.9% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.78.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 males.
