Greenfield is a city in Greene County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2020 census. [3]
Greenfield is located in eastern Greene County at 39°20′35″N90°12′35″W / 39.34306°N 90.20972°W (39.342969, -90.209798). [4] Illinois Route 267 passes through the city, leading north 27 miles (43 km) to Jacksonville and south 13 miles (21 km) to Medora. Carrollton, the Greene County seat, is 13 miles (21 km) to the southwest via Routes 267 and 108.
According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Greenfield has a total area of 1.78 square miles (4.61 km2), of which 1.71 square miles (4.43 km2) (or 96.45%) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2) (or 3.55%) is water. [5]

As of the 2020 census [3] there were 1,059 people, 479 households, and 327 families residing in the city. The population density was 595.95 inhabitants per square mile (230.10/km2). There were 489 housing units at an average density of 275.18 per square mile (106.25/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.32% White, 0.00% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 3.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.
There were 479 households, out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.10% were married couples living together, 8.56% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.73% were non-families. 27.77% of all households were made up of individuals, and 21.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
The city's age distribution consisted of 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39.0 years. For every 100 females, there were 69.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,139, and the median income for a family was $64,250. Males had a median income of $49,659 versus $21,786 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,068. About 7.6% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.7% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those age 65 or over.
Greenfield is served by its own school district, Greenfield Community Unit School District Number 10. Greenfield CUSD 10 serves portions of Greene, Jersey, Macoupin and Morgan Counties. Schools include Greenfield High School and Greenfield Elementary School. [7]
