Handball Association of India is the governing body for handball in India. HAI is a member of the Asian Handball Federation and the International Handball Federation. [1] It is also a member of Commonwealth Handball Association and South Asian Handball Federation.

History

HAI replaced the Handball Federation of India as the official handball governing body in 2023. HFI was founded by Jagat Singh Chauhan from Rohtak (Haryana) who was an alumnus of YMCA College of Physical Education of Madras Chennai. He was also the first secretary general of HFI. [2]

The 1st Senior National Handball Championship was held at Sir Chhotu Ram Stadium, Rohtak, in the year 1972. Haryana won the gold medal and Vidharba got the silver medal.[ citation needed ]

Mamta Kharab is an Indian former field hockey player, who represented the India women's national field hockey team. She has also captained the national team. During the 2002 Commonwealth Games, she scored the winning goal which gave India the gold. She also served as the model for the character of Komal Chautala in the 2007 Bollywood hit, Chak De India. Now she is working with Haryana police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police. She is a recipient of the Arjuna Award.

Netball Federation of India (NFI) is the national governing body of Netball in India. NFI is a non-profit, government funded organisation affiliated with the International Netball Federation (INF), the Asian Federation of Netball Association (AFNA) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. NFI was established in 1978 to standardise rules and regulations and to promote and develop the growth of netball in India. Handball in India is controlled by the Handball Association of India. It was founded by Jagat Singh Lohan from Rohtak, Haryana, who was an alumnus of YMCA College of Physical Education of Madras. His efforts during Munich Olympics helped in establishing HFI. The member states were Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Vidharbha and Jammu and Kashmir. He was also elected as first secretary general of Handball Federation of India.
