Introduction

The Holden HR range was released in April 1966, replacing the Holden HD series which had been in production since 1965. [2] In addition to a revised grille, the HR featured a reworked roofline and larger rear window (on the sedans), revised rear lights (on sedans and wagons) and changes to almost all exterior body panels. [3] Other changes included revised ball joint front suspension, [4] widened track, improved interior trim and woodgrain interior finish for the Premier models. [3] Six months after the launch of the HR, all models were given a safety upgrade with the addition of front safety belts, windscreen washers, reversing lights, padded sun visors and a shatterproof interior rearview mirror. [3]

Model range

The Holden HR passenger vehicle range offered four-door sedan and five-door station wagon body styles in three trim levels with the six models marketed as follows:

The HR commercial vehicle range was offered in two-door coupe utility and two-door panel van variants, marketed as follows:

Engines and transmissions

The two versions of the inline six cylinder Holden Red motor were carried across from the HD series, both with increased engine capacity and a higher compression ratio [3] (9.2:1). [6] The 114 bhp 161 cu in (2.6 L) six was standard in all models except the Premiers. [5] [7] A 126 bhp 186 cu in (3.0 L) six was standard on Premiers and optional on all other models. [5] [7] The 145 bhp twin carburettor "X2" version of the "186" was initially available as an option on all models. [5] [7] The "X2" was replaced by the 145 bhp "186S" in June 1967 after Holden exhausted the remaining X2 intake manifolds, the new version fitted with a single two barrel carburettor. [3]

A lower compression (8.2:1) version of the 161 cu in (2.6 L) six was also available. [6]

The 194 cu in (3.2 L) and 230 cu in (3.8 L) Chevrolet six-cylinder engine was fitted for the South African market. [1] This began partway through the HR's existence, with the 194 introduced for the 1967 model year. [8] The Premier Automatic sold in South Africa retained the Australian engine, at least until 1969. The South African Holden Special had power disc brakes in front as standard from 1967. [9]

A three-speed manual gearbox with column change was standard on the HR with a two speed "Powerglide" automatic transmission available as an option. [10] An Opel [10] four-speed manual gearbox was offered from June 1967. [11]

Production and replacement

A total of 252,352 vehicles were produced up to January 1968 when the HR was replaced by the Holden HK series. [12]
The price at release was A$2286 for the 161 cu in (2.6 L) Special Sedan manual and A$2856 for the Premier Station Sedan manual. [6]

The Holden Torana is a mid-sized car that was manufactured by Holden from 1967 to 1980. The name apparently comes from an word meaning "to fly" in an unconfirmed Aboriginal Australian language. The original HB series Torana was released in 1967 and was a four-cylinder compact vehicle closely based on the British Vauxhall Viva HB series of 1966 - 1970.

The Holden Kingswood is a full-size car that was manufactured in Australia by Holden, from the beginning of the HK series in 1968 through to the conclusion of the WB series in 1984. Prior to 1968, the full-size Holden range of family cars comprised the Holden Standard, the Holden Special, and Holden Premier models. Initially, the HK range of models included the basic Holden Belmont, the Kingswood, and the luxury-oriented Holden Premier, all of which were manufactured in a choice of sedan and station wagon bodies. Commercial variants were offered in three types: coupé utility, panel van, and later from 1971, a heavy-duty Holden One Tonner cab chassis. The utility (ute) version was originally marketed in both Belmont and Kingswood configurations. However, after the Belmont name was deleted from commercials at the end of HQ in late 1974, the base model commercials were sold only with the "Holden" badge.

The Holden EH is an automobile produced by General Motors-Holden in Australia from 1963 to 1965. The EH was released in August 1963 replacing the Holden EJ series, and was the first Holden to incorporate the new "Red" engine, with a seven main bearing crankshaft instead of the four main bearing crankshaft used in the "Grey" engine. At first, a larger capacity 149-cubic-inch (2,440 cc) engine was only sold attached to a three-speed manual gearbox or the "Hydramatic" four-stage automatic transmission with a column shift. The Controlled Coupling Hydramatic used in the EH was actually a four-stage, although it effectively worked as a three-speed unit, except at full throttle. The 179-cubic-inch (2,930 cc) engine was initially sold only with the "Hydramatic" transmission. The first EH with a 179-cubic-inch engine and a manual gear box was called the "EH-S4", and was fitted with an upgraded manual gearbox, having stronger gears than in the 149 gear box, and an upgraded clutch. The three-speed manual column shift gearboxes had no synchromesh on first gear, only on the second and third (top) gear.

Holden Special Motor vehicle

The Holden Special is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Holden for Australasia. Introduced as the top-level trim in the new Holden FJ range of 1953, the Special was complemented by the entry-level Holden Standard and the mid-range Holden Business. The Business was in fact already available, introduced in July 1953 in the 48 series first seen in 1948. Three months later, the FJ was introduced, therefore forming a three-model lineup based around one car. A "Standard"-type variant also existed in the 48 series, but had been marketed simply as the "Holden".
