Indian Uruguayans form a small expatriate community consisting mostly of businessmen, Indian employees of TCS and some Catholic nuns. As of January 2016, about 83 Indians hold permanent residency in Uruguay. A further 733 Indians reside in the country on long-term visas, most of whom are employed by TCS in Montevideo. A small number of Indians from the Gujarati and Sindhi communities work as importers and run retail outlets of Indian textiles and handicrafts in Uruguay. [1]
Tata Consultancy Services has established a software development centre and a regional training centre in Montevideo and it is the first IT Centre opened by TCS in Latin America. There are about 300 Indians in Montevideo; most of these are young IT professionals from TCS. Indian companies have shown interest in investment in pharma and agri-business sectors and they are encouraged to do so as they can acquire farmlands and also lease the land. [2] As of 2013, there are 125 Indian citizens registered in the Uruguayan social security. [3]
Early in 2013 a Gurgaon-based Private Limited company "Sharma Fabricators and Erectors (P) Ltd" established its Latin American branch to participate and carry out various construction jobs throughout the region. It present in the country with a team of 100 executives and technicians.
Indian culture has very little presence in the country as there are no Hindu or Sikh temples and Indian food and spices are very limited.
Indian Restaurants:
Moksha - Cocina de la India, [4] [5] is the first Indian Restaurant in Montevideo located in Punta Carretas. They have since also opened another branch in the old city (Cuidad Vieja) and third takeaway & delivery place in Malvin.
The Taste of India, [6] has a takeout and delivery service in the heart of Pocitos neighborhood.
There are a few Yoga organizations in Uruguay, which spread Indian thought and philosophy-prominent among them are, the Sivapremananda Ashram of the Divine Society. A portion of the beach in Montevideo is named after Mahatma Gandhi and a bust of Gandhi is installed in one of the parks along the beach. [7]
Recently, some employees of TCS have started playing cricket in Montevideo, Uruguay. Slowly, due to the curiosity surrounding the new sport, the local population of Montevideo throng to Mahatma Gandhi Rambla to see the enthusiastic people playing this new sport. This was published in a leading national daily. [8]
The Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded by Mother Teresa, is also established in Uruguay. [9]
Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) is an Indian multinational information technology (IT) services and consulting company headquartered in Mumbai. It is a part of the Tata Group and operates in 150 locations across 46 countries. In September 2023, it was reported that TCS had over 616,000 employees worldwide. TCS is the second-largest Indian company by market capitalization, the most valuable IT service brands worldwide, and the top Big Tech (India) company. As of June 2023, it was the world's second-largest user of U.S. H-1B visas.
Hinduism is a minority religion in South America, which is followed by even less than 1% of the total continent's population. Hinduism is found in several countries, but is strongest in the Indo-Caribbean populations of Guyana and Suriname. There are about 320,000 Hindus in South America, chiefly the descendants of Indian indentured laborers in the Guianas. There are about 185,000 Hindus in Guyana, 120,000 in Suriname, and some others in French Guiana. In Guyana and Suriname, Hindus form the second largest religion and in some regions and districts, Hindus form the majority. Though in recent times, due to influence of Hindu culture the number of Hindus converts have increased in other countries in South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and others.
Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), commonly referred to as MG University, is a state owned public university headquartered in Kottayam in the state of Kerala, India. It was established on 2 October 1983 on Gandhi Jayanti day. Mahatma Gandhi University has been approved by University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited (A) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India. The university has around 300 affiliated colleges spread over five districts in central Kerala.
The Catholic Church in Uruguay is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the pope.
Brazil–India relations, also referred to as Indo-Brazilian relations, are the bilateral relations between Brazil and India.
The bilateral relations between the Republic of India and the Republic of South Africa have grown strong since the end of apartheid in South Africa in 1994. Both countries have since developed close strategic, cultural and economic ties. Both are former British colonies and full member states of the Commonwealth of Nations as republics.
Korean Uruguayans, numbering 130 individuals, formed the 19th-largest Korean community in Latin America as of 2005, according to the statistics of South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Paraguay and Uruguay established diplomatic relations on April 6, 1845. Paraguay has an embassy and a consulate-general in Montevideo. Uruguay has an embassy and a consulate-general in Asunción. Paraguay also has an honorary consulate in Punta del Este. Both countries were founding members of the Mercosur, and both are full members of the Rio Group, the Latin Union, the Association of Spanish Language Academies, the Organization of American States, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the Union of South American Nations, the URUPABOL, the Cairns Group and the Group of 77.
Georgia and India maintain diplomatic relations. The Embassy of India in Yerevan, Armenia is concurrently accredited to Georgia. Georgia maintains an embassy in New Delhi.
India–Kyrgyzstan relations are the relations between India and Kyrgyzstan.
India–Serbia relations are foreign relations between India and Serbia. India has an embassy in Belgrade. Serbia has an embassy in New Delhi and an honorary consulate in Chennai. Both countries are key allies and were founding members of the Non Aligned Movement with Serbia being part of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia at the time. India was one of the nations that cosponsored the proposal to readmit the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to the United Nations in 2000. India backs Serbia's position regarding Kosovo and supports Serbia's EU integration process. During her visit to Belgrade in 2013, Indian foreign minister Preneet Kaur stated that she hopes that Serbia will continue to support reforms in international bodies, including the United Nations, and India's bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. In an interview for local media, H.E. Narinder Chauhan, Indian Ambassador to Serbia stated that "Despite of Breakup of Yugoslavia our political relations continue to be exceptional, marked by a long tradition of mutual support on issues of core interest... It is a matter of immense satisfaction that Serbia also supports India’s international role. India sees Serbia as a reliable partner."
Cuisine of Montevideo refers to the food cooked and served in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. The cuisine served in this city is similar to the one served throughout the whole country of Uruguay, with beef being a staple of the diet along with the torta frita, a pan-fried cake.

India is represented in Uruguay through its embassy in Buenos Aires in Argentina; it also has a consulate general in Montevideo. Uruguay has an embassy in New Delhi and a consulate in Mumbai. Diplomatic relations were established in 1948. The Uruguayan embassy in New Delhi was first opened in 1960 and operated until 1975. It was re-opened in 1998. In May 2010, Uruguayan ambassador to India Cesar Ferrer requested India to open an embassy in Montevideo.
India–Lithuania relations are the bilateral relations between India and Lithuania. The Indian embassy in Warsaw, Poland is accredited to Lithuania. Lithuania has an embassy in New Delhi.
India–Peru relations are the international relations that exist between India and Peru.
Costa Rica–India relations refers to the international relations that exist between Costa Rica and India. Costa Rica has an embassy in New Delhi whilst India has a non resident ambassador in Panama.
East Timor–India relations are the international relations that exist between East Timor and India. The Embassy of India in Jakarta, Indonesia is concurrently accredited to East Timor. East Timor has no diplomatic representation in India. On 7 September 2023, India has announced to open an embassy in Dili.
Grenada–India relations refers to the international relations that exist between Grenada and India. The High Commission of India in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago is concurrently accredited to Grenada. Grenada has no diplomatic mission in India.
Haiti–India relations refers to the international relations between Haiti and India. The Embassy of India in Havana, Cuba is concurrently accredited to Haiti.
