Installation 01 is an upcoming fan-made first-person shooter video game based on the Halo series, developed by Soon Studios (previously known as The Installation 01 Team) for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems in Unreal Engine 5.
Installation 01 is a fan-made, multiplayer-only [1] project originally designed in Unity for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux by Soon Studios. [2] [3] [4] The intent is to replicate the multiplayer gameplay of Halo: Combat Evolved , Halo 2 , Halo 3 , Halo 4 , and Halo 5 as a tribute to the series of games—with a specific target of Halo 3—and to do so without re-use of Microsoft assets. [5] The game is named after the Halo ring created by the Forerunner race in the Halo universe. [6]
The studio planned to support some features from later Halo games, but only in custom game modes. [5] [7] Game artist Seth H. described a tension in the art and game design of Installation 01 caused by the Halo series' individual game designs. [7] They plan to provide map-making tools. [7]
An extremely-early version of the game was displayed in August 2014. [3] In November 2015, the game was displayed with functional multiplayer in "very small counts" of players; Kotaku noted that the game had not progressed far since August 2014. [3] The team sought to have a playable version of the video game in Q4 2016. [2] The studio was composed of over 30 people at this time. [4]
A test for the multiplayer mode was scheduled for November 2016, with plans for a later single-player mode. [4] At the time, the studio had made a number of familiar game elements, as well as both refreshed and remade versions of certain game maps. [8] Animation polish and additional gameplay elements remained. [8] Kotaku said the game was progressing well in March 2017. [9] In May, a cinematic trailer was released, [1] which featured character and weapons models based on Halo 3 designs. [10] Animator Matthew Lake animated a trailer for both his final academic assignment and to generate excitement for the game. [11] The game's release date was still unknown. [10] In July 2023, the studio announced it would be switching the project to Unreal Engine 5. [12] In November 2023, an early development post was made on Twitter, showcasing a playtest in Unreal Engine 5. Some art assets have been used in the new engine, but Soon Studios clarified that they're doing the programming from scratch.
There has not been a publicly available build throughout development, and there is no release date.
Soon Studios approached Microsoft around August 2016 regarding Microsoft's intellectual property, but did not receive a reply at the time. [5] GameSpot also inquired, without receiving a response. [5] In June 2017, Soon Studios announced their ongoing communication with 343 Industries and Microsoft. [13] [14] [15] The studio has been transparent with 343 Industries regarding plans for the game. 343 Industries confirmed that the developers are "not under imminent legal threat". [6] Installation 01's development is covered under Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules, as long as the game remains non-commercial. [13] [16] He elaborates that they will never accept donations, or sell Installation 01 or Halo related merchandise as to keep a respectful distance between the studio and Microsoft's intellectual property. He also notes that these rules and assurances from Microsoft are specific to Installation 01 as a project, and do not apply elsewhere. [14] [15]

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a 2011 first-person shooter video game developed by 343 Industries, Saber Interactive, and Certain Affinity, and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It is a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), originally developed by Bungie. Announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2011, it was released on November 15, 2011, the 10th anniversary of both the original Xbox and the game itself, for the Xbox 360 console. The Coalition is a Canadian video game developer based in Vancouver. A subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios, a division of Microsoft Gaming, the company was founded in 2010 as Zipline Studios. Following the release of its debut game, Relic Rescue (2011), Zipline was renamed Microsoft Game Studios Vancouver. In February 2012, the studio released the flight simulator Microsoft Flight. Later that year, in November, Microsoft Game Studios Vancouver was rebranded as Black Tusk Studios. After Microsoft acquired the rights to the franchise Gears of War in 2014, the studio was commissioned to develop new games in the series. Black Tusk was renamed The Coalition in June 2015, and in August released Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, a remaster of the original Gears of War (2006). In the ensuing years, the studio developed Gears of War 4 (2016) and Gears 5 (2019). It also collaborated with Mediatonic and Splash Damage to develop the real-time strategy Gears Pop! (2019) and the turn-based tactics Gears Tactics (2020), respectively.
Halo 5: Guardians is a 2015 first-person shooter video game developed by 343 Industries, published by Microsoft Studios, and released worldwide for the Xbox One game console on October 27, 2015. The plot follows two fireteams of human supersoldiers: Blue Team, led by Master Chief, and Fireteam Osiris, led by Spartan Locke. When Blue Team goes absent without leave to track down the artificial intelligence construct Cortana, Master Chief's loyalty is called into question and Fireteam Osiris is sent to retrieve him.
H-Hour: World's Elite was a tactical shooter video game, that was developed by SOF Studios. The game released in early access for Microsoft Windows via Steam in May 2015. A version for the PlayStation 4 was planned to be released at a later date.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a 2015 third-person shooter video game. It is a remastered edition of the 2006 video game Gears of War, the first installment of the Gears of War series, originally developed by Epic Games. Developed by The Coalition and published by Microsoft Studios, Ultimate Edition is based on the original game's source code; The Coalition's goal for the project was to accurately preserve the original gameplay experience while updating its visual presentation for a contemporary console generation. Halo Wars 2 is a real-time strategy video game developed by 343 Industries and Creative Assembly. It was published by Microsoft Studios and released in February 2017 on Windows and Xbox One. The game is set in the science fiction universe of the Halo franchise in 2559. It is a sequel to Halo Wars (2009). The story follows the crew of Spirit of Fire, a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) ship. Spirit of Fire arrives at the Ark, a Forerunner installation responsible for constructing and remotely controlling the titular Halo rings. Conflict breaks out between the UNSC forces and an alien faction known as the Banished over control of the Ark.
Paragon is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Epic Games, powered by their own Unreal Engine 4. The game started buy-to-play early access in March 2016, and then launched free-to-play access to its open beta started in August 2016. After failed attempts to make the game sustainable and having trouble keeping a player base, Epic Games made the decision to shut down Paragon servers in April 2018.

Facing Worlds, also known by its filename CTF-Face, is a multiplayer map for the first-person shooter video games Unreal Tournament (1999), Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament 3, and Unreal Tournament (2014). Consisting of two identical towers separated by a bridge, each team must fight their way into the opposing team's tower and capture their flag. The original Unreal Tournament version of Facing Worlds received critical acclaim, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest first-person shooter maps of all time.
