Wheel of Fortune is an American television game show that was created by Merv Griffin and first aired in 1975, with a syndicated version airing since 1983. Since its premiere, the program has been adapted into several international adaptations. The 1975 version premiered on Australian TV in 1981 and premiered in the UK in 1988. It has also been adapted to numerous countries around the world.

Dave Ross commissioned the show for the BBC and gave it the name, he had already produced Masterteam a quiz with Angela Rippon and worked on Mastermind, and so the name was a continuum of that. The format was revived and updated for the BBC in February 2005 by executive producers Roddam and John Silver with series producer Karen Ross.

The franchise started with the United States version, which began airing in 2003. A second season was shown in 2008, and in 2019, Paradise Hotel got a third season. In August 2019, the broadcaster of the show, Fox, cancelled it.
