Janaka Thissakuttiarachchi is a member of the Uva Provincial Council representing the Monaragala District.
The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. It is the 7th largest province by area and is home to 2.5 million people, the 3rd most populated province. The province is bordered by Sabaragamuwa Province and Uva Province to the North, Eastern Province to the Northeast, Western Province to the Northwest and the Indian Ocean to the South, West and East. The Province's capital is Galle.
The Uva Province is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka. The province has an area of 8,500 km2 and a population of 1,266,463, making it the 2nd least populated province. The provincial capital is Badulla.
Badulla District is a district in Uva Province, Sri Lanka. The entire land area of the Badulla district is 2,861 km2 (1,105 sq mi) and has a total population of 837,000. The district is bounded by the districts of Monaragala and Rathnapura on the east and south, by Ampara and Kandy districts to the north and by Nuwara Eliya and Matale to the west. Mainly the economy of the district is based on agricultural farming and livestock.
Chief ministers in Sri Lanka are elected heads of the provincial boards of ministers, bodies which aid and advice the governors, the heads of the provincial government, in the exercise of their executive power. The governor appoints as chief minister a member of the provincial council who, in his opinion, commands the support of a majority of that council. There are nine chief ministerial positions in the country, out of which only six are currently occupied, while 3 are vacant and under the governor's direct rule.
Sri Lanka has held several rounds of Provincial Council elections in 2008 and 2009 to elect members to eight of the country’s Provincial Councils. The decision to hold elections in different parts of the country on separate days was a break in the usual practice, which is to hold elections for the whole country on the same day. For each provincial council, members are elected to serve a five-year term. A chief minister for the province is chosen by the elected members.

Chamika Buddhadasa MP is a Member of Parliament representing the Badulla District. He is the son of A. M. Buddhadasa. In May 2010 he was appointed as the responsible MP for the field of Highways.
Vijitha Berugoda is a Sri Lankan politician, a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. He belongs to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He has started his political career as the chairman of Bibila Pradeshiya Sabha in 1998. From 1999, after winning Provincial council election he became a member of Uva Provincial Council and continued until 2010.
Harin Fernando, MP is a Sri Lankan politician, Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament. He is the current Minister of Tourism and Lands as well as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs. He previously served as the Minister of Sports before, as well as the Telecommunication, Digital Infrastructure Facilities, Foreign Employment, and Tourism ministers in previous Sri Lankan governments. He was the 7th Chief Minister of Uva Province.
Polwatte Samaraweera Aratchilage Percy Samaraweera was a Sri Lankan politician who belonged to the United National Party. He was educated at St John's College Panadura and St Sylvester's College, Kandy. He was the first Chief Minister of Uva Province in Sri Lanka from 16 September 1988 to 6 June 1998 after which the council was dissolved and elections were held only in 1999. He was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in 1965 and 1977 from Welimada electorate.
Samaraweera Weerawanni is a Sri Lankan politician. He was the Chief Minister of Uva Province in Sri Lanka from Apr 1999 to Oct 2001 his wife Nalini Weerawanni was the Chief Minister till he resigned from the Sri Lankan Parliament and became the Chief Minister.
Gamini Vijith Vijithamuni Soysa is a Sri Lankan politician. He was the Chief Minister of Uva Province in Sri Lanka from July 2004 to Aug 2009. He was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in 1989, 2000, 2001 and 2010 from Monaragala.
Aththintha Marakalage Buddhadasa, known as A.M. Buddhadasa, was the Chief Minister of Uva Province in Sri Lanka from 1995 to 1999. He later served as Health Minister in the Provincial Council.
Provincial council elections were held in Sri Lanka on 20 September 2014 to elect 34 members to one of the nine provincial councils in the country. 0.9 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in the election. Elections to the remaining eight provincial councils were not due as they had their last election in 2012, 2013 or 2014 (Mar).
