Tiran Alles,MP is a Sri Lankan businessman and politician. He is a current member of Parliament of Sri Lanka and the Minister of Public Security. [1] Alles had entered politics as an ally of former General Sarath Fonseka and a member of parliament for Fonseka's Democratic National Alliance in 2010. Leaving parliament in 2015,he returned as a member of Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the leader of the United People's Party in 2020 and became a minister in 2022.
He was the former chairman of Airport and Aviation Services. [2]
The eldest son of the late leading educationists R. I. T. Alles, [3] he was educated at the Royal College Colombo.
In 1988,he launched the company Communication &Business Equipment (CBE) with 10 employees. He also acted as the chairman of the Bandaranaike International Airport and launched a major expansion program of the airport. CBE also launched 2 newspapers: Mawbima and The Sunday Standard . [3]
In 2002,he started a mobile telephony business in Sri Lanka after securing exclusive distribution rights,which led to a political controversy a few years later. [4]
Tiran Alles worked for Mangala Samaraweera when he became the campaign manager for President Mahinda Rajapaksa (2004–2005) of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He was later accused of fomenting a pact,the Rajapaksa-LTTE pact,that led to the boycott of the 2005 elections in the north and east of the country,thus allowing Rajapaksa' victory. [3]
In 2010,he supported the electoral campaign of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and took part in General Sarath Fonseka's presidential campaign against Rajapaksa. After the election loss,he became the chairman of Fonseka's new alliance,the Democratic National Alliance (DNA),for the 2010 parliamentary election,of which the JVP had been a part. Although the alliance won a very little result in the election,he subsequently became a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament for the DNA through a national list seat. [4] [3]
In 2020,he was reappointed to the Parliament through the national list of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna,led by new prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. In May 2022,when Rajapaksa resigned,he was appointed the minister of Public Security in the new government.
Starting in December 2023,Alles has been heavily involved in Operation Yukthiya,an anti-drug effort conducted by Sri Lankan Police where over 38,525 suspects being arrested as of 17 January 2024. [5] He has dismissed criticism from groups such as the United Nations Human Rights Council and reaffirmed his commitment to the operation. [6]
Alles presented the online safety act in January 2024 despite criticism from local and international activists,governments and technology companies. The opposition made claim the act was presented without Supreme Court recommendation. Most activists said that the act was presented by Alles to help the government that was falling in popularity. In February Alles had to make 47 amendments to the act only after 13 days after passing it. [7]

Executive power is exercised by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers. Legislative power is vested in the Parliament. Ranil Wickremesinghe is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the ninth president of Sri Lanka from 2022 to 2024. Previously,he served as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 1993–1994,2001–2004,2015–2018,2018-2019 and in 2022. He held several ministerial roles,including Minister of Finance,Minister of Defence,Minister of Technology and Minister of Women,Child Affairs and Social Empowerment. Wickremesinghe has led the United National Party (UNP) since 1994 and has been Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on six occasions.
The United National Party is a centre-right political party in Sri Lanka. The UNP has served as the country's ruling party,or as part of its governing coalition,for 38 of the country's 74 years of independence,including the periods 1947–1956,1965–1970,1977–1994,2001–2004 and 2015–2019. The party also controlled the executive presidency from its formation in 1978 until 1994 and again from 2022 to 2024.
Mahinda Rajapaksa is a Sri Lankan politician. He served as the sixth President of Sri Lanka from 2005 to 2015;the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 2004 to 2005,2018,and 2019 to 2022;the Leader of the Opposition from 2002 to 2004 and 2018 to 2019,and the Minister of Finance from 2005 to 2015 and 2019 to 2021. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kurunegala since 2015.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is a leftist political party in Sri Lanka. The party was formerly a revolutionary movement and was involved in two armed uprisings against the government of Sri Lanka:once in 1971 (SLFP),and another in 1987–1989 (UNP). The motive for both uprisings was to establish a socialist state. Since then the JVP has entered mainstream democratic politics and has updated its ideology,abandoning some of its original Marxist policies such as the abolition of private property,and moderating its rhetoric. The JVP has been led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake since 2014.
The United People's Freedom Alliance was a political alliance in Sri Lanka founded by former Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga in 2004 and dissolved by former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in 2019.

Field Marshal Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka is a retired Sri Lankan army officer. Maithripala Yapa Sirisena is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the seventh president of Sri Lanka from 9 January 2015 to 18 November 2019. Sirisena is Sri Lanka's first president from the North Central Province of the country and does not belong to the traditional Sri Lankan political elite. He entered as a member of parliament from Polonnaruwa back in 2020 and ended his tenure in 2024.
Sunil Handunnetti is a Sri Lankan politician and a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka who has served as the Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development since November 2024. A member of the National People's Power and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna,he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Matara Electoral District in 2024 Sri Lankan parliamentary election.He formerly contested 2010 parliamentary elections under the Democratic National Alliance (DNA),which is led by former army chief Sarath Fonseka and was re-elected to Parliament from Colombo District.

The 15th Parliament of Sri Lanka was the meeting of the Parliament of Sri Lanka with its membership determined by the results of the 2015 parliamentary election,held on 17 August 2015. The parliament met for the first time on 1 September 2015 and was dissolved on 3 March 2020.
The Sri Lanka People's Front,commonly known by its Sinhalese name Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP),is a political party in Sri Lanka. A constitutional crisis began in Sri Lanka when President Maithripala Sirisena appointed former president and member of parliament Mahinda Rajapaksa as prime minister on 26 October 2018 before formally dismissing the incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe,resulting in two concurrent prime ministers. Wickremesinghe and the United National Party (UNP) viewed the appointment as illegal,and he refused to resign.
