Banjul, officially the City of Banjul, is the capital and fourth largest city of The Gambia. It is the centre of the eponymous administrative division which is home to an estimated 400,000 residents, making it The Gambia's largest and most densely populated metropolitan area. Banjul is on St Mary's Island, where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The population of the city proper is 31,301, with the Greater Banjul Area, which includes the City of Banjul and the Kanifing Municipal Council, at a population of 413,397. The island is connected to the mainland to the west and the rest of Greater Banjul Area via bridges. There are also ferries linking Banjul to the mainland at the other side of the river.
Serekunda is the largest urban centre in The Gambia. It is situated close to the Atlantic coast, 13 km (8 mi) south-west of the capital, Banjul, and is formed of nine villages which have grown together into a larger urban area.
Lower River Division is one of the five administrative divisions of the Gambia. Its capital is Mansa Konko. The city and area council elections were held during April 2002, when Wally S.M. Sanneh, an APRC candidate became the Mayor, winning unopposed. The council was led by Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), which won all the 12 seats.
Central River is the largest of the five administrative divisions of the Gambia. Its capital is Janjanbureh, on MacCarthy Island. The largest settlement is Bansang, with an estimated population in 2008 of 8,381.
North Bank was one of the five administrative divisions of the Gambia. Its capital was Kerewan. It was subsequently reorganised as the Kerewan Local Government Area (LGA), without any change in the area covered.
Upper River was one of the five Divisions of the Gambia. Its capital was Basse Santa Su. It was subsequently reorganised as the Basse Local Government Area, without any change in the area covered.
West Coast Region, originally the Western Division, also known as Foni or Fonyi, was one of the five administrative divisions of the Gambia. Its capital was Brikama. It was subsequently reorganised as the Brikama Local Government Area (LGA), without any change in the area covered.
Kuntaur is a town located in central part of the Gambia.
The Gambia is subdivided into 43 districts. They are listed below by Local Government Area, each with its population at the 15 April 2013 census.
The Gambia is divided into five administrative Regions and one City. The divisions of the Gambia are created by the Independent Electoral Commission in accordance to Article 192 of the National Constitution.
Kombo Central is one of the nine districts of the Gambia's Western Division, which is located to the south of the Gambia River in the southwest of the country. Kombo Central is in the southwest of the division, between Kombo East and Kombo South. In the 2013 census, it had a population of 142,831.
Kombo North/Saint Mary is one of the nine districts of the Gambia's Brikama Local Government Area, which is located to the south of the Gambia River in the southwest of the country. Kombo North/Saint Mary is in the northwest of the LGA, between Kombo South and Kanifing LGA. It is the only district in the LGA with coasts on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gambia River, and is the most populated district in the LGA, with 344,756 inhabitants at the 2013 Census.
Upper Baddibu was one of the six districts of the North Bank Division of The Gambia. Its main town was Farafenni. The North Bank Division is now the Kerewan Local Government Area, and the former Upper Baddibu District is now divided into an Illiasa District and a Sabach Sanjal District. Its population in the 2003 census, prior to division, was 55,370.
The tourism industry today in the Gambia started when a party of 300 Swedish tourists arrived in 1965. That pioneering trip was organised by a Swede named Bertil Harding together with the tour operators Vingresor. It was seen as an ideal place to escape the harsh winter months of Scandinavia where Europeans would enjoy not only sun, sand and beaches but also experience the excitement of a real African holiday. It also offered a new opening for an affordable holiday to increasing numbers of traveling Europeans.
The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is a contiguous urban region that is composed of some of the largest cities and metropolitan areas by population in the Canadian province of Ontario. The GTHA consists of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and the city of Hamilton. The GTA is Canada's most populous metropolitan area that includes the city of Toronto and the regional municipalities of Halton, Peel, York, and Durham. The GTHA forms the core of a larger urban agglomeration known as the Golden Horseshoe.
The University of the Gambia (UTG) is an institution of higher education located in Sere Kunda, the largest city in the Gambia.
Gambia Bird Airlines Limited was the flag carrier airline of Gambia headquartered in Kanifing with its home base at Banjul International Airport. It suspended operations in December 2014.
American International University West Africa established The Gambia campus in January 2011 in Serekunda. The University offers medical program leading to Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree. The curriculum is based on American Medical Schools systems. The University is open to students from Africa. AIU Health Science Center consists of 5 colleges: College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing, College of Health Professionals: MLT. AIUWA admit students three times a year. The first campus is located at 89 Kairaba Avenue, KSMD, Fajara, The Gambia. 201 students from 14 countries enrolled in 2013. A new campus has been constructed at Kanifing Institutional Area. 120,000 square foot campus houses State of Art classrooms, Laboratories, Library, Conference rooms and other Students facilities. Construction of the new campus started in April 2013 and was completed by end of 2016. It has since graduated a high numbers of Nurses who are helping the Health sector of the county in various parts and most of the graduates are out of the country for further educations(such as Masters) or working with International Organizations such as WHO, UN MRC. although a large number of the students in the school, popularly known as AIUWA are international students, most have them are doing well in their countries. The school is accredited by National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Agency (NAQAA) which was established in 2015. AIUWA is a great place to be and most of the Lecturers in the school are Professors, PhDs and Masters holders.
Latri Kunda is part of the Kanifing District, and a suburb of Sere Kunda in the Gambia.
Local elections were held in the Gambia on 20 May 2023. The elections took place following President Adama Barrow's re-election under the banner of the new National People's Party, and their subsequent victory in the 2022 parliamentary elections.
