"Liar" is a song by Australian singer Silia Kapsis,released on 29 February 2024 by K2ID Productions. Self-described as a song that derides "people who live in a fake world with a fake script",it was written by Dimitris Kontopoulos and Elke Tiel. The song represented Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024,where it finished in 15th place with 78 points at the grand final.
"Liar" was written and composed by Dimitris Kontopoulos and Elke Tiel. [1] In press statements given before the song's release,Kapsis hinted that the song would be a dance-pop song. [2] She also later stated that her song was directed towards for people who live "fake" lives,criticizing them for pushing "body shaming [and] sexualliti[ sic ]". [3] Kapsis,who has further stated that the song focuses about the effect social media has on young women,proclaimed that the song was made to convince people to leave a "façade of fakeness". [4]
Originally,the song was to be submitted to Russia for its national final in 2022,but the country was kicked out by the EBU after the invasion of Ukraine. [5] In 2023,it was recorded as a demo by the Greek artist Melissa Mantzoukis,with whom she participated in the closed national selection of Greece for the 2023 competition. The song qualified for the second phase of the selection,where it got the first place by the audience committee with 693 points,but only third from the artistic committee with 440 points,managing to take second place overall with 1,133 points,behind Victor Vernicos' song "What They Say". Rumours of Kapsis being picked by Cyprus' broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest,the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC),were spread as early as mid-August 2023 by OGAE's Greek branch. [7] Kapsis was officially announced as Cyprus' representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on 25 September. [8] On 22 February 2024,Kapsis released a snippet as a sneak-peek to promote the song. [9]
Along with the song's release,an accompanying music video was released on the same day. [1] The music video was shot in the Cypriot city of Limassol, [10] and was directed by Kostas Karydas. [1] The music video features Kapsis wearing gold-colored attire. [11]
To further promote the song,Kapsis participated in Eurovision pre-parties,including Eurovision in Concert. [12] She also gave away two tickets to the Eurovision grand final via a competition that featured the song prominently. [13]
In a Wiwibloggs review containing several statements from several critics,the song was rated 6.53 out of 10 points, [14] earning 19th out of the 37 competing songs on the site's annual ranking. [15] Another review conducted by ESC Bubble that contained reviews from a combination of readers and juries rated the song 11th out of the 15 songs in the Eurovision semi-final "Liar" was in. [16] ESC Beat's Doron Lahav ranked the song 17th overall;Lahav admitted that although he thought it had high staging potential,the song itself did not have anything "innovative". [17] In another ranking, Vulture 's Jon O'Brien ranked the song 24th overall,deeming it a "watered-down version of the ethnopop banger that reversed its Eurovision fortunes",referring to Eleni Foureira's "Fuego". Cyprus' broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), announced its intent to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on 19 May 2023. Originally, CyBC planned to organize a national final to select its entrant; [19] however, the show that was going to be used, Fame Story , was a Greek television show. Due to this, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), the Greek public broadcaster, threatened to withdraw from the European Broadcasting Union if no action was taken. [20] As a result, CyBC changed to an internal selection. [21] Kapsis was later announced as the representative on 25 September. [8]
The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 took place at the Malmö Arena in Malmö, Sweden, and consisted of two semi-finals held on the respective dates of 7 and 9 May and the final on 11 May 2024. During the allocation draw on 30 January 2024, Cyprus was drawn to compete in the first semi-final, performing in the first half of the show. [22] Kapsis was later drawn to perform to open the semi-final, behind Serbia's Teya Dora. [23]
The Eurovision performance was choreographed by Kelly Sweeney and Guy Amir, [24] along with Dan Shipton being appointed as creative director for the performance. [25] Kapsis performed with four other dancers, including Theo B. Koefoed, Thomas Hegnet, Sebastian Laurentius Nielsen, and Martin Daugaard. [26] The Eurovision performance featured Kapsis wearing a white-coloured crop top and trousers, with a mixture of red and green LEDs serving as the background. [27] [28] A background displaying swirls of water circles was also shown. [29] "Liar" finished in sixth, scoring 67 points and securing a position in the grand final. [30] [31]
Kapsis performed a repeat of her performance in the grand final on 11 May. The song was performed 20th in the grand final, ahead of Armenia's Ladaniva and before Switzerland's Nemo Mettler. [32] After the results were announced, Kapsis finished in 15th with 78 points, with a split score of 34 points from juries and 44 points from televoting. [33] Regarding the former, the song did not receive any set of the maximum 12 points; the highest any country gave it was 10 points, with it coming from Greece. One set of 12 points was awarded to the song from televoting; the set also came from Greece. [34]

Cyprus has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 40 times since making its debut in 1981. Cyprus' first entry was the group Island, who finished sixth. The country's best result in the contest is a second-place finish with Eleni Foureira in 2018.
Eleni Foureira is a naturalised-Greek Albanian singer and dancer. She began her music career in 2007 as a member of the Greek girl group Mystique, pursuing a solo career after the group disbanded in 2009. She has released five studio albums since.
Greece participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "This Is Love" written by Dimitris Kontopoulos, Romy Papadea and John Ballard. The song was performed by Demy, who was internally selected by the Greek broadcaster Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) to represent Greece at the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. Demy was announced at the Greek representative on 13 January 2017, while a national final was held in order to select the song she would perform. Three songs competed in the national final on 6 March 2017 and a combination of international jury voting and public voting selected "This Is Love" as the winning song.

Self-described as a "techno-inspired pop track", it was written by Anderz Wrethov, Jimmy Thörnfeldt, Julie Aagaard, and Thomas Stengaard. The song represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed in 24th with 24 points, at the grand final. Based on official charts it reached number thirty in Lithuania and fifty five in her home country of Austria.
"Fighter" is a song by Israeli-born Luxembourgish singer-songwriter Tali Golergant, written by Ana Zimmer, Dario Faini, Manon Romiti, and Silvio Lisbonne. It was released on 12 January 2024 by Bel Air Records. Self-described as a song about how humans suffer and persevere through struggles, the song represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 – the first Luxembourgish entry in the contest in over 30 years, with the country last competing in 1993. At the contest, it finished in 13th place at the grand final with 103 points.
"Zari" is a song by Greek singer Marina Satti. It was co-written by Satti alongside with eight other songwriters, and released on 7 March 2024 by Golden Records as the second single off her extended play P.O.P. It represented Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it finished in 11th place at the grand final with 126 points. Satti describes it as a song that aims to tell the "real characteristics" of young Greek people and their culture. It peaked at number one in Greece and has been certified double platinum by the IFPI Greece.
"Luktelk" is a song by Lithuanian singer-songwriter Silvester Belt. It was self-released on 11 January 2024, and was written by Džesika Šyvokaitė, Elena Jurgaitytė, and Belt. The song represented Lithuania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed 14th with 90 points.
"Europapa" is a song by Dutch musician Joost Klein. Self-described as a "very Dutch" 1990s-style song, it was written by Klein along with six other songwriters. It was self-released on 29 February 2024 and represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it was disqualified from the final due to Klein reportedly making "unlawful threats" to a member of the contest's production crew.
"Ramonda" is a song by Serbian singer-songwriter Teodora Pavlovska, known by her stage name, Teya Dora. The song was released on 22 January 2024 by PGP-RTS and was written by Pavlovska, Luka Jovanović, and Andrijano Kadović. It represented Serbia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed 17th with 54 points.
"The Code" is a song by Swiss singer Nemo, released on 29 February 2024. It has been described by Nemo as a song that details their experience with coming to terms with their non-binary identity. They represented Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song, where they won the contest with 591 points. In the process, the song became the first victory for the country since Céline Dion's Ne partez pas sans moi in 1988, and the first winning song ever in the history of the contest by a non-binary artist.

"Özünlə apar" is a song by Azerbaijani singer Fahree featuring Ilkin Dovlatov. It was written by Fahree and four other writers, and was released on 15 March 2024 by Beat Music. "Özünlə apar" represented Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
