Every year, a national panel appointed by the government selects the winning entry and awards were given by then President of Bangladesh. It was the first ceremony of National Film Awards and presented on 4 April 1976. Director Zahir Raihan was awarded a special awards.

The 2nd Bangladesh National Film Awards was presented by Ministry of Information to felicitate the best of Bangladeshi Cinema censored in the year 1976. It was the second ceremony of National Film Awards. The Ceremony took place at Dhaka, Bangladesh on March 24, 1977, and awards were given by then President of Bangladesh. 20 films were submitted for different categories.

The 3rd Bangladesh National Film Awards were given by the Government of Bangladesh for releases in 1977. It was the third ceremony of National Film Awards.
