The UK Albums Chart is one of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company that calculates the best-selling albums of the week in the United Kingdom. [1] [2] [3] Before 2004, the chart was only based on the sales of physical albums. This list shows albums that peaked in the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart during 1999, as well as albums which peaked in 1998 and 2000 but were in the top 10 in 1999. The entry date is when the album appeared in the top ten for the first time (week ending, as published by the Official Charts Company, which is six days after the chart is announced).
The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays. It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and published in Music Week magazine, and on the OCC website.
The Official Charts Company, also referred to as Official Charts is a British inter-professional organisation that compiles various "official" record charts in the United Kingdom, including the UK Singles Chart, the UK Albums Chart, the UK Singles Downloads Chart and the UK Album Downloads Chart, as well as genre-specific and music video charts. The OCC produces its charts by gathering and combining sales data from retailers through market researchers Millward Brown, and claims to cover 99% of the singles market and 95% of the album market, and aims to collect data from any retailer who sells more than 100 chart items per week.
This is a summary of 1999 in music in the United Kingdom.
The first new number-one album of the year was You've Come a Long Way, Baby by Fatboy Slim. Overall, fifteen different albums peaked at number-one in 1999, with fifteen unique artists hitting that position.
You've Come a Long Way, Baby is the second studio album by English electronic music producer Fatboy Slim. It was first released on 19 October 1998 in the United Kingdom by Skint Records and a day later in the United States by Astralwerks. Cook recorded and produced the album at his home studio in Brighton, known as the House of Love, using an Atari ST computer, Creator software, and floppy disks. Its cover photo was originally taken at the 1983 Fat People’s Festival in Danville, Virginia; it was changed to an image of shelves stacked with records for its North American release.
Norman Quentin Cook, known by his stage name Fatboy Slim, is an English DJ, musician, and record producer who helped to popularise the big beat genre in the 1990s. In the 1980s, Cook was the bassist for the Hull-based indie rock band the Housemartins, who achieved a UK number-one single with their a cappella cover of "Caravan of Love". After the Housemartins split, Norman Cook formed the electronic band Beats International in Brighton, who produced the number-one single "Dub Be Good to Me". Cook joined acts including Freak Power, Pizzaman, and the Mighty Dub Katz to moderate success.
Shania Twain had the best-selling album of the year with Come On Over . By Request by Boyzone came in second place. The Man Who by Travis, ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits by ABBA and Performance and Cocktails by Stereophonics made up the top five. Albums by Robbie Williams, Steps, The Corrs, Westlife and Macy Gray were also in the top-ten best selling albums of the year.
Shania Twain, OC is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She has sold over 100 million records, making her the best-selling female artist in country music history and among the best-selling music artists of all time. Her success garnered her several honorific titles including the "Queen of Country Pop".
Come On Over is the third studio album recorded by Canadian country music singer Shania Twain. It was released on November 4, 1997. It became the best-selling country music album, the best-selling studio album by a female act, and the best selling album by a Canadian. It is the eighth best-selling album in the United States, and sixteenth best-selling album in the United Kingdom.
By Request is the first greatest hits album by Irish boy band Boyzone. It was released on 31 May 1999 by Universal. The album has sold over 4 million copies worldwide.
