This article is about list of cities in Andhra Pradesh state of India. The statistical data is based on 2011 Census of India , conducted by The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, under Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India .

Andhra Pradesh State in southern India

Andhra Pradesh is one of the 29 states of India. Situated in the south-east of the country, it is the seventh-largest state in India, covering an area of 162,970 km2 (62,920 sq mi). As per the 2011 census, it is the tenth most populous state, with 49,386,799 inhabitants. The largest city in Andhra Pradesh is Visakhapatnam. Telugu, one of the classical languages of India, is the major and official language of Andhra Pradesh.

India Country in South Asia

India, also known as the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh largest country by area and with more than 1.3 billion people, it is the second most populous country as well as the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the northeast; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, while its Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

The 15th Indian Census was conducted in two phases, house listing and population enumeration. House listing phase began on 1 April 2010 and involved collection of information about all buildings. Information for National Population Register was also collected in the first phase, which will be used to issue a 12-digit unique identification number to all registered Indian residents by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The second population enumeration phase was conducted between 9 and 28 February 2011. Census has been conducted in India since 1872 and 2011 marks the first time biometric information was collected. According to the provisional reports released on 31 March 2011, the Indian population increased to 1.21 billion with a decadal growth of 17.70%. Adult literacy rate increased to 74.04% with a decadal growth of 9.21%. The motto of the census was 'Our Census, Our future'.

Cities statistics

As per 2011 Census of India, Towns with population of 100,000 and above are called Cities. [1] The state of Andhra Pradesh has a total of 31 cities, including the state capital, Amaravati. [2] These cities include, 14 municipal corporations, 17 municipalities. [3] All the thirteen district headquarters of the state are classified as cities and are having municipal corporation status. Visakhapatnam is the most populous city with a population of 2,035,922 after merger of surrounding villages in Visakhapatnam municipal corporation and Srikakulam is the least populated municipal corporation with a population of 125,939. [3] Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada are the two metropolitan cities in the state. [4] In terms of area, Visakhapatnam is the largest corporation with an area of 681.96 km2 (263.31 sq mi), followed by the state capital, Amaravati. Visakhapatnam is the least densely populated city and Eluru is most densely packed city in Andhra Pradesh. Among the corporations, Eluru is the smallest corporation with an area of 14.55 km2 (5.62 sq mi). [3]

Srikakulam City in Andhra Pradesh, India

Srikakulam is a city and the district headquarters of Srikakulam district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation and also the mandal headquarters of Srikakulam mandal in Srikakulam revenue division. As of 2011 census, it was most populous city of Srikaulam district and 24th populous city of the state with a population of 146,988. The city is believed to have been founded by Balarama.

Visakhapatnam Metropolis in Andhra Pradesh, India

Visakhapatnam and Waltair ) is the largest city and the financial capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The city is the administrative headquarters of Visakhapatnam district and state headquarters of Indian Coast Guard. Its geographical location is amidst the Eastern Ghats and the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is the most populous city in the state with a population of 2,035,922 as of 2011, making it the 14th largest city in the country. It is also the 9th most populous metropolitan area in India with a population of 5,018,000. With an output of $43.5 billion, Visakhapatnam is the ninth-largest contributor to India's overall gross domestic product as of 2016.

Vijayawada Metropolis in Andhra Pradesh, India

Vijayawada is a city in the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, on the banks of River Krishna in Krishna district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The city is the third most densely populated in the urban population of built-up areas in the world and is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh by population. Vijayawada is classified as a Y-grade city as per the Sixth Central Pay Commission. Vijayawada is the commercial headquarters of Andhra Pradesh. It was recognised as a "Global City of the Future" by McKinsey Quarterly, which expected an increase to GDP of $17 billion by 2025. Vijayawada was ISO 37120 Platinum Level certified in October 2018 and has been added to the "Global Cities Registry".

Machilipatnam City in Andhra Pradesh, India

Machilipatnam, also known as Masulipatnam and Bandar, is a town in Krishna district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation and the administrative headquarters of Krishna district. It is also the mandal headquarters of Machilipatnam mandal in Machilipatnam revenue division of the district. The ancient port town served as the settlement of European traders from the 16th century, and it was a major trading port for the British, Dutch and French in the seventeenth century.

Vizianagaram City in Andhra Pradesh, India

Vizianagaram is a city and district headquarters of Vizianagaram district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality and also the mandal headquarters of Vizianagaram mandal. It is located 18 km inland from the Bay of Bengal and 42 km to the northeast of Visakhapatnam.
