About 60% of the economy in North Sumatra is backed by trading, agriculture, and processing industries, including exports from its 4 million acres of palm oil plantations. Tunjungan Plaza (TP) is a superblock in Surabaya and is the second-largest shopping center in Indonesia after Pakuwon Mall, both owned-and-operated by Pakuwon Jati which has its headquarters inside the superblock. Initially inaugurated in 1986, it has a net leaseable area of 253,187 m2, which houses more than 500 retail outlets including boutiques, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, bookstores, supermarkets, and children's arcade center. It is a part of Tunjungan City Superblock, an integrated multi-facilities venue, which includes the mall, Menara Mandiri Office Tower at the top of TP 2, Regency Condominium and Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers at the top of TP 3, Four Points by Sheraton at the top of TP 4, The Peak Residence and Pakuwon Center at the top of TP 5, One Icon Residence and Pakuwon Tower at the top of TP 6. Pakuwon Mall is a shopping mall in Surabaya, Indonesia. It is the largest mall in Indonesia with a net leasable area of 200,000 m2. This mall is connected with Pakuwon Trade Center (PTC). It is on Jalan Puncak Indah Lontar at Pakuwon Indah Superblock complex at 30-hectare land area, at the CBD of West Surabaya. At the top of Pakuwon Mall, there are four tower apartments, which are called Orchard and Tanglin Tower, Anderson and Benson Tower, and there are two condominium towers called La Riz and La Viz. La Viz is still under construction. Also, there are 2 hotels right above this mall, The Westin and Four Points by Sheraton. This mall was first opened in November 2003 by PT Pakuwon Jati Tbk, two years after Pakuwon Group opened Tunjungan Plaza 4. Pakuwon Mall has six floors, while Pakuwon Trade Center has only three.

Pakuwon owns and manages shopping centers such as Tunjungan Plaza superblocks, BBD Tower complex office, five-stars Sheraton Surabaya Hotel, Condominium and Laguna Indah real estate, as well as several industrial estates located in Surabaya metropolitan area. On August 22, 1989, Pakuwon obtained an effective statement from Bapepam-LK to conduct an initial public offering (IPO). These shares were listed on the Surabaya Stock Exchange and the Jakarta Stock Exchange on October 9, 1989.
