Mary White was a steam trawler that was built in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1935. She was launched as White Pioneer, but renamed Mary White in 1937. She was a naval trawler from 1940 to 1946. She was renamed Luffness in 1949.
She was the first steamship to be purpose-built with a propulsion system made by White's Marine Engineering Company of Newcastle. William Albert White combined a compound steam engine and an exhaust steam turbine, with reduction gearing for both engines onto the same propeller shaft. In 1948 her compound engine, turbine, and reduction gearing were all removed, and replaced with a triple expansion engine.
As White Pioneer, the trawler operated from Newcastle upon Tyne. As Mary White, she operated from Milford Haven and Grimsby. As Luffness, she operated from Granton. In 1958 Luffness ran aground while trying to enter Aberdeen Harbour, but without loss of life. She was repaired and refloated to be towed away for scrap, but sank a few miles southeast of Aberdeen.
In 1934, White had bought a second-hand turbine ship, and converted her to his combination of reciprocating and turbine propulsion with reduction gearing. [1] The ship, which he renamed Adderstone, was a successful proof of concept. He then ordered a new fishing trawler from John Lewis & Sons of Aberdeen, to be equipped with a smaller version of the same propulsion system.
Lewis built her as yard number 134; launched her on 1 August 1935; [2] and completed her that September. Her length was 126.3 ft (38.5 m); her beam was 23.2 ft (7.1 m); and her depth was 12.6 ft (3.8 m). Her tonnages were 270 GRT and 118 NRT. [3] She was designed to fish in either the North Sea, or waters around the Faroe Islands. [4]
White Pioneer had a single screw. Her compound engine had two cylinders, and drove the propeller shaft via single reduction gearing. Her exhaust turbine drove the same shaft via double reduction gearing. A single Scotch boiler, made by Riley Brothers of Stockton-on-Tees, supplied steam at 220 lbf/in2. The combined power of her reciprocating engine plus turbine was rated at 98 NHP; [3] 470 bhp; [5] or 500 ihp. She achieved 13+1⁄2 knots (25 km/h) on her sea trials. [4] She was rigged to sail as a ketch. [6] She was equipped with an echo sounding device. [3]
White Pioneer was registered at Newcastle. Her UK official number was 161586; her call sign was GYMT; [3] and her port letter and number were NE 3. [6] [7] White owned White Pioneer, but Joseph D Irwin of North Shields managed her. [6]
John Lewis & Sons built trawlers for other customers to the same measurements as White Pioneer. Yard number 136 was launched in December 1935 as Fort Rannoch, [8] and yard number 137 was launched in June 1936 as Mount Keen. [9] However, each had a traditional triple expansion engine, with no exhaust turbine, and without White's reduction gearing.
By mid-1937, White Pioneer had been renamed Mary White. [10] On 20 May that year, she attended the fleet review at Spithead in England, that celebrated the Coronation of George VI and Elizabeth. From 11 June, she was based at Milford Haven in Wales, and by 1 July, her managers were Peter Hancock & Sons of Milford. She was laid up from 7 October 1938 to 18 January 1939. [6]
In January 1940, the Admiralty requisitioned Mary White. She was converted into a boom defence vessel. Her pennant number was Z 147. [6] [7] By January 1942 she was based at Oban, under the Western Approaches Command. [11] In February 1946 she was returned to her owners. [6]
On 11 March 1944, while she was still in naval service, Shire Trawlers became her owners, and William Alfred Bennett became her manager. [12] On 11 March 1947, her registration was transferred to Grimsby. [13] Her port letter and number were GY 465. In January 1948, Alexander Hall and Sons replaced Mary White's engine and boiler. Her White's engines and gearing were dispensed with, and Hall installed in their stead a three-cylinder triple-expansion engine that they had built in 1926. Her replacement boiler was made by Riley Brothers, who had made her original boiler, but its operating pressure was 190 lbf/in2, which was lower than that of her original boiler. [14]
On 3 December 1948, [6] Newhaven Trawlers became Mary White's owners, and William Carnie, Junior, became her manager. She was renamed Luffness, after the hamlet of Luffness in East Lothian. Her registration was transferred to Granton on the Firth of Forth, [6] [13] and her port letter and number were GN 57. [6] Her navigation equipment included a position fixing device by 1957, [14] and radar by 1958. [15]
On 21 January 1958, Luffness tried to enter Aberdeen Harbour to land a crewman who had been taken ill. As sh approached the harbour mouth, her steering gear malfunctioned, and she grounded on the North Pier. The Aberdeen Steam Tug Company's tug Danny soon reached the trawler, and cast a line to her, but Luffness was rolled so much in the swell that the line was broken. This happened three times. Then the Aberdeen pilot cutter arrived, got alongside Luffness, and rescued 11 members of the crew. As the cutter pulled away, it was realised that one crewman had been left on the trawler. Danny quickly rescued him. The crewman who was ill was hospitalised, and the others were taken to Aberdeen Seamen's Mission. [7]
Luffness was in danger of rolling off the North Pier into the navigable channel, where she would become a navigation hazard, so lines were secured to her to try to hold her in place. The next day she rolled onto her side, but remained on the rocky ledge, and so did not obstruct the channel. [7] Attempts were made to salve her, but stopped several times by bad weather. By 15 March, her insurers had declared her a constructive total loss. [16] She was passed to Metal Industries, Limited to be scrapped. She was temporarily repaired, in order to be towed to Metal Industries' ship breaking yard on the Firth of Forth. [7]
Luffness was towed out of Aberdeen, but sank a few miles out of port. Sources disagree as to whether she was scuttled, or whether she sank against the wishes of Metal Industries. A hydrographic survey has found a wreck at position 57°05′34″N02°01′48″W / 57.09278°N 2.03000°W , at a depth of almost 150 feet (46 m). No dive reports have established the identity of the wreck, but her size and position suggest that it is that of Luffness. [7]
White's Marine Engineering Company was a British marine engineering company in Hebburn on Tyneside, that made marine steam engines in the 1930s.
SS Akaroa was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1914 in Ireland as Euripides for Aberdeen Line. When new, she was the largest ship in the Aberdeen Line fleet.
MV Spreewald was a Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) cargo motor ship that was launched in 1922 and sunk in a friendly fire incident in 1942. She was renamed Anubis in 1935, and reverted to her original name Spreewald in 1939.
The first USS Auburn (ID-3842) was a steam turbine cargo ship of the United States Shipping Board that was built in 1919 and scrapped in 1934. In 1919 she briefly served in the United States Navy.
SS Uhenfels was a German-built heavy-lift ship that was launched in 1931 for DDG Hansa. She was captured by the Royal Navy in 1939, two months after the start of the Second World War. The UK Ministry of Shipping renamed her Empire Ability and contracted Elder Dempster Lines to operate her. In 1941 a German U-boat sank her by torpedo.
Wickenburgh was a cargo liner that was built in 1938 as Adler by Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft, Lübeck for German owners. Requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940, she was seized by the Allies in Vordingborg, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Coningsby. In 1946, she was transferred to the Dutch Government and renamed Margeca. In 1947 she was sold into merchant service and renamed Wickenburgh. In 1953 her compound steam engine and low-pressure steam turbine were replaced with a diesel engine, with a reduction in gross register tonnage from 1,494 to 1,420. She was sold to Greek owners in 1963 and renamed Nissos Thassos. In 1970 she was sold to Panamanian owners and renamed Savilco. She was scrapped in 1984.
SS Friedrich Bischoff was a cargo steamship. She was built in Germany in 1940. The United Kingdom seized her in 1945, and renamed her Empire Consequence. In 1947 she was transferred to the United States Maritime Commission. In 1951 a Finnish company bought her and renamed her Kaisaniemi. She was scrapped in Norway in 1967.
SS Barlind was a steam coaster. She was built in Germany in 1938 for a German shipowner, who named her Süderau. In 1945 the Allies seized her; the UK Ministry of War Transport took possession of her; and she was renamed Empire Content. In 1946 she was transferred the Norwegian Directorate for Enemy Property, and renamed Svartnes. In 1947 she joined the fleet of Fred. Olsen & Co. and was renamed Barlind. In 1971 a Greek owner bought her and renamed her Ikaria. She was bought by Italian ship breakers in 1972.
Preußen was a fishing trawler requisitioned during World War II by the Kriegsmarine for use as a Vorpostenboot. She was built in 1930 as August Wriedt, and was renamed Preußen in 1933. On 13 August 1944, she was sunk off Langeoog by Bristol Beaufighter aircraft of 254 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
UJ-121 Jochen was a steam trawler that was built in Germany in 1939, and converted into a submarine chaser at the beginning of the Second World War. A mine sank her in the North Sea in 1940, with the loss of 13 of her crew.
The German trawler V 1605 Mosel was a steam trawler that was built in Germany in 1937 as Hans Loh. In 1939 she was converted into the naval trawler M-1903. In 1943 she became the VorpostenbootV-1605. An Allied air attack sank her in the Skagerrak in 1944, killing 21 members of her crew. Her wreck is now a recreational wreck diving site.
SS Jagiełło was a passenger and cargo steamship. She was launched in Germany in 1939 as Doğu for Turkish owners, but taken over by the German government and renamed Lüderitzbucht. Toward the end of the Second World War she was renamed Duala. At the end of the war, the United Kingdom seized her and renamed her Empire Ock. In 1946 she was transferred as war reparations to the USSR, who renamed her Pyotr Velikiy. In 1947 she was transferred to Poland, who renamed her Jagiełło. For a year Cosulich Line ran Jagiełło on a route between Genoa, Italy and Colón, Panama. In 1949 she returned to Soviet ownership, and her name reverted to Pyotr Velikiy. She was scrapped in Spain at the end of 1973.
SS Santa Fé was a German refrigerated cargo steamship. She is now a Black Sea shipwreck and part of her cargo is of interest to marine archaeologists.
SS Demosthenes was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1911 in Ireland for Aberdeen Line and scrapped in 1931 in England. In the First World War she was an Allied troop ship.
SS Algarve was a Danish cargo steamship that was built in 1921 for DFDS. After Germany invaded Denmark in April 1940 Algarve was transferred to the UK Ministry of War Transport. In 1941 an E-boat sank her with all hands in the North Sea.
Rhineland was a 1,312 GRT cargo steamship that Howaldtswerke of Kiel, Germany built in 1938 for Argo Line, Bremen. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1939, and served as VP-101 Schwan, Sperrbrecher 31 and Sperrbrecher 131. She served post-war with the German Mine Sweeping Administration before being declared a prize and passed to British owners. She was renamed Weltonwold in 1948 and then Rhineland in 1949. She was sold to South African owners in 1956 and renamed Herrisbrook. She was renamed Inyoni in 1957 and scrapped in 1962.
The German trawler V 406 Hans Loh was a steam trawler that became a Vorpostenboot in the Second World War. She was launched in Germany in 1936 as Hans Loh. In September 1939 she was converted into the VorpostenbootV-402. That October she was renumbered V-206. A mine sank her in the Gironde estuary in August 1942, killing 18 members of her crew.
SS Adderstone was a cargo ship that was built in Ireland in 1920. She was launched as the turbine steamship War Bamboo, and for most of her career she was called Boswell (1920–34), Germa (1937–51), or Norway Maru (1951–1968/70). She spent only about three years as Adderstone (1934–37). However, it was as Adderstone that the ship was the test-bed for an innovative development in marine steam propulsion, which used reduction gearing not only for an exhaust steam turbine but also for a high-speed reciprocating steam engine.
SS Agios Georgios IV was a Greek-owned cargo steamship that was built in England in 1938 and sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean in 1942. Agios Georgios IV was one of a relatively small number of steamships that had White combination engines. This was a combination of a high-speed four-cylinder compound steam engine that drove the propeller shaft via single-reduction gearing, with an exhaust steam turbine that drove the same shaft via double-reduction gearing.
Empire Mariner was a cargo steamship. She was built in Germany in 1922 for Hamburg America Line (HAPAG), who named her Schwarzwald. In 1935 H. Vogemann bought her and renamed her Rheingold. In October 1939 a Royal Navy cruiser captured her, and the United Kingdom government renamed her as the Empire ship Empire Mariner. She survived numerous transatlantic convoys in the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1946 South American Saint Line bought her and renamed her Saint Ina. In 1948 Bristol City Line bought her and renamed her Wells City. In 1951 the Pakistani-owned East & West Steamship Company bought her and renamed her Fausta. She was scrapped in Pakistan in 1964.
