The Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team represents the University of Michigan and competes in the Big Ten Conference. Under head coach Bev Plocki, the team has won 27 Big Ten championships and advanced to 31 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, including sixteen consecutive appearances from 1993 to 2008. In 2021, the Wolverines won the program's first-ever team national title.
The Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team was formed in 1976. In its 42-year history, the team has had six coaches. [2]
Newt Loken, head of the men's gymnastics team from 1948 to 1983, was hired to be the first women's coach and served one season. Anne Cornell and Scott Ponto both served short tenures before Sheri Hyatt for five seasons starting in 1980. Under Hyatt, the program won its first Big Ten conference championship and qualified to its first NCAA tournament, both in 1982.
Hyatt was followed in 1985 by Dana Kempthorn, and then in 1990 by current head coach Bev Plocki. Plocki has led the Wolverines to twenty-six Big Ten titles, 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 26 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, including sixteen consecutive championship berths from 1993 to 2008. The Wolverines have had five gymnasts who have won NCAA individual championships. Beth Wymer won the NCAA championship in the uneven bars three consecutive years from 1993 to 1995. Elise Ray won the NCAA all-around championship in 2001 (tied with UCLA's Onnie Willis), the balance beam championship in 2002 and the uneven bars in 2004. [4] In 2011, Kylee Botterman won the NCAA all-around championship. In 2013, Joanna Sampson won the NCAA championship on floor exercise. [5] In 2019, Natalie Wojcik won the NCAA championship on balance beam. [6]
The Wolverines have qualified for the NCAA Championships 31 times. They have qualified to the Super Six team finals ten times: [7] Since the format of the NCAA Championships changed starting in 2019, the Wolverines have qualified to the Four on the Floor team finals one time. In 2021, the team won their first NCAA Championship with a program-best score of 198.2500.

Michigan's home competitions are held at the 12,707-seat Crisler Center. In 2002, the 22,000-square-foot (2,000 m2) Donald R. Shepherd Women's Gymnastics Training Center was dedicated. The Shepherd Center is the practice and training home of the women's gymnastics team. The facility has 17,000 square feet (1,600 m2) of training space; the remaining 5,000 square feet (460 m2) contains a training room, coaches offices, a locker room, a team lounge, and a study area. The Michigan Wolverines comprise 29 varsity sports teams at the University of Michigan. These teams compete in the NCAA's Division I and in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except women's water polo, which competes in the NCAA inter-divisional Collegiate Water Polo Association. Team colors are maize and blue, though these are different shades of "maize" and "blue" from those used by the university at large. The winged helmet is a recognized icon of Michigan Athletics.
Mary Elise Ray is an American gymnast who represented the United States at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the 1999 World Championships. She was the head gymnastics coach at the University of Washington from 2016 to 2020.
Kristal Dawn Bodenschatz is a retired American gymnast. A junior national all-around champion for three consecutive years, she was considered one of the United States' most promising junior gymnasts in the late 1990s.
Ernestine Jean Russell, later known by her married names Ernestine Carter and Ernestine Weaver, is a Canadian former gymnast and American former college gymnastics coach. She represented Canada in the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics. Although Russell won no medals in her two Olympic appearances, she is regarded as Canada's first notable female Olympic gymnast and contributed significantly to the growing popularity of women's gymnastics in Canada and the United States.
Beverly Jean Plocki is an American gymnastics coach, and the current coach of the Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team. In 32 years as the head coach at Michigan, her teams have a record of 830–263–4 and have won 25 Big Ten Conference championships, and advanced to 25 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, including 16 straight NCAA championship tournaments from 1993 to 2008. Plocki led her team to the NCAA Championship in 2021, the first championship won by a Big Ten Conference team.
Beth Wymer is a former NCAA champion gymnast. While attending the University of Michigan, she won the NCAA event championship in the uneven bars three consecutive years from 1993 to 1995 and was a first-team All-American four times in the uneven bars, twice in the all-around, and once in the balance beam. In 1995, Wymer was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year. She was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 2006.
The Michigan Wolverines men's track and field team is the intercollegiate track and field program representing the University of Michigan. The school competes in the Big Ten Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Jordan Lee Taylor is an American, former collegiate All-American, 3-time professional All-Star right-handed softball pitcher originally from Santa Clarita, California. She played for the Michigan Wolverines softball team from 2008–2011 and Team USA. She was drafted #11 and played from 2011-18 in the National Pro Fastpitch where she is currently the career leader in saves. She is the career Big Ten Conference career leader in strikeouts and also ranks in numerous records for the Wolverines, the conference and in the NCAA Division I.
Ron Warhurst is an American track and field coach. He was the head coach of the University of Michigan's men's track and field team from 2000 to 2008. Warhurst was also a member of the cross country teams at Western Michigan that won consecutive NCAA championships in 1964 and 1965.
Jennifer Darlene Ritter is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired softball pitcher and current sports commentator. She played college softball and was a starting pitcher for the Michigan Wolverines softball from 2003 to 2006 and led them to the 2005 Women's College World Series championship. She is the career shutouts record holder for the Wolverines in the Big Ten Conference.
Quazi Syque Caesar is a Bengali-American gymnastics coach. A retired artistic gymnast, he represented Bangladesh at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was a captain of the Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics team. He was an assistant coach for the Stanford Cardinal men's gymnastics team for over six years, was the head coach for the men's gymnastics athlete resident program at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center until its dissolution in 2022, and is currently coaching at EVO Gymnastics.
The Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics team represents the University of Michigan and competes in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines have won seven NCAA championships, 21 Big Ten championships and have been invited to 32 NCAA tournaments. Since 1999, Michigan has finished in the Super Six at the NCAA tournament in 11 of 12 seasons. In 2013, Michigan won its fifth NCAA men's gymnastics team championship. The following year, Michigan repeated as National Champions for its sixth NCAA men's gymnastics team championship.
Sierra Joy Romero is a Mexican American professional softball player. She formerly was a volunteer assistant softball coach for the Oregon Ducks softball team. She played college softball for Michigan from 2013 to 2016, where she set numerous records and was a four-time All-American. She holds the Big Ten Conference career Triple Crown, along with the total bases and slugging percentage records, simultaneously leading all of the NCAA Division I in runs scored and grand slams. She was the inaugural winner of both the espnW Softball Player of the Year in 2015 and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Year in 2016, when she also took home the Honda Sports Award Softball Player of the Year and USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year awards. She is one of nine NCAA players to hit .400 with 200 RBIs, 50 home runs and an .800 slugging percentage for her career and was named the #5 Greatest College Softball Player.
The Michigan Wolverines women's volleyball team represents the University of Michigan in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I competition. The women's volleyball program at the University of Michigan began in 1973. Erin Virtue has been the coach since 2023. The team plays its home matches at Cliff Keen Arena.
Natalie Wojcik is a former American artistic gymnast. She competed for the Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team, and is a seven-time All-American.
Anastasia Maria Webb is a former American artistic gymnast. She competed for the Oklahoma Sooners women's gymnastics team. In 2021, she became the NCAA All Around Champion and tied for the floor and vault titles, to go along with OU's team championship from 2019.
The 2021 Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team represented the University of Michigan in the 2021 NCAA Division I women's gymnastics season as members of the Big Ten Conference in their 46th season of collegiate competition. The Wolverines were led by head coach Bev Plocki in her thirty-second season, and played their home meets at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Joanna Sampson is a former American artistic gymnast. She competed for the Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team. Sampson was the first gymnast in Michigan program history to score a perfect 10.0 on floor exercise in any postseason competition in 2014.
Paul Wojciech Juda is an American artistic gymnast. He is a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team. He was a member of the bronze medal-winning team at the 2023 World Championships and the bronze medal-winning team at the 2024 Olympic Games. He was also a two-time silver medalist at the 2021 Pan American Championships. In NCAA Gymnastics, he competes for the Michigan Wolverines, where he has won five Big Ten titles and three individual NCAA championships.
Sierra Brooks is an American artistic gymnast. She currently competes for the Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team, and is a six-time All-American.
