Micromax Informatics is an Indian multinational manufacturer of consumer electronics and home appliances, headquartered in Gurugram. [2] It was established in March 2000 as an IT software company operating in embedded systems. It entered the mobile phone business in 2008 and, by 2010, became one of the largest companies making low-cost feature phones in India.
In 2014, Micromax was the tenth largest smartphone vendor in the world. [3] In the subsequent years, the company faced stiff competition from Chinese companies that began penetrating the Indian market. [4] The company also owns YU Televentures, which sells its products under the brand name YU. [5]
Micromax was incorporated as Micromax Informatics Ltd. in the year 2000 by Rahul Sharma and Rohit Patel. [6] It began selling mobile phones in 2008, [7] focusing on democratising technology for masses to compete with international players. [8]
The company also introduced handsets (budget and flagship) with innovative features. For instance, Micromax's co-founder Rahul Sharma once saw a public call office being powered by a truck battery because of frequent power cuts in its locale. This prompted him to launch a feature mobile phone with a long battery life. [9] This was the X1i phone, Micromax's first mobile phone with a month-long battery back-up. [10]
In 2014, Micromax's sales in India exceeded those of Samsung. It became the mobile telephone reseller to ship the most telephones in one quarter in India. [11] On 24 January 2014, Micromax became the first Indian mobile company to sell in Russia. [12] In 2020, Micromax made a comeback in the Indian mobile industry with a new sub-brand "IN". [13]
Known for mobile handsets and LED TV panels, Micromax is also expanding its portfolio in the consumer electronics segment, targeting the "premium economy class" consumers. [14]
Micromax entered the tablet computer market with the debut of the Funbook series. [15]

Micromax launched its first eight-core flagship smartphone, Canvas Knight A350, in March 2014 for the Russian market. In the same year on September, Micromax launched the Android One smartphone, Canvas A1.
Micromax launched Micromax Canvas Silver 5, which it claimed was the slimmest telephone in the world on 17 June 2015. [16] The company is an official Windows Phone 8.1 hardware partner. [17] In June 2014, it launched two Windows smartphones, the Micromax Canvas Win W092 and the Micromax Canvas Win W121. [18]
On 8 June 2015, Micromax announced the launch of Micromax Amaze 2. [19] The device has a 5-inch IPS display with resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. The smartphone is powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage.
A year later, Micromax announced the launch of Micromax Canvas Unite 4 and Canvas Unite 4 Pro. [20] Both these smartphones run on Indus OS 2.0. The Canvas Unite 4 is powered by a 1.0 GHz quad-core processor with 1 GB RAM. The Micromax Canvas Unite 4 Pro had more powerful specifications, featuring a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with 2 GB RAM.
In 2016, Micromax Canvas Mega 2 was launched and shipped.
Micromax has rolled out basic smartphones with 4G capabilities under the Bharat series. So far, the company has already launched Bharat 2 - which is considered one of India's cheapest 4G mobile phones. [21]
Micromax has announced the entry of Micromax Dual 5 and Micromax Dual 4 in India.
Later in August 2017, Micromax launched its first bezel-less smartphone with an aspect ratio of 18:9. This device called Canvas Infinity still fell within the budget category.
Micromax Infinity N11 smartphone was launched in December 2018.
Following the latest 18:9 trend, the smartphone features a 5.4-inch HD+ Full View display with the screen resolution of 720 pixels. Powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core MediaTek 6739 processor, the device runs on the latest Android Oreo operating system. Furthermore, backed up by 2 GB RAM + 16 GB internal storage, the handset will later be launched in 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage variants as well. [22]
Running Android Nougat OS, Micromax Canvas 3 allows media sharing and wireless smartphone control. The TV comes in different screen sizes: 32-inch, 40-inch and 50-inch. [23]
Micromax launched its IN Series on 2020 with the introduction of two models IN 1B and IN Note 1. They promised two years of Android Security Updates and assured to always use Clean Stock Android in this Series.

Mobile phones, LED TVs, LED Lamp and Tablets. The Government would be providing land to Micromax for setting up the centre, which has a capacity to produce 10 lakh devices a month, which include mobile phones, LED TVs, LED lights and Tablets. It presently employs 700 people. The firm's first facility in Uttarakhand has a capacity to produce 16 lakh devices. [24]
Micromax have three factories - Bhiwadi (Rajasthan), Rudrapur (Uttarakhand) and Telangana. In Bhiwadi, the surface Mount Technology (SMT) line is already operational and trials are running in Rudrapur. For Telangana, the machinery is under import. Altogether, Micromax will have a capacity of about 30 lakh a month for mobile phones. [25]
Micromax started manufacturing LED televisions and tablets at its factory in Rudrapur (SIDCUL), Uttarakhand, in April 2014. [26] As of August 2015 [update] , Micromax was set to start a ₹500 crore (US$60 million) manufacturing plant in Rajasthan's Alwar district after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Rajasthan and Bhagwati Products Ltd. The first product, to be launched under a newly floated wholly owned unit, YU Televentures, is a smartphone with operating system from US-based Cyanogen Inc. through which Micromax aims to move beyond the business of mobile phone hardware that has become more or less standardised. [28]
In November 2014, Micromax partnered with Cyanogen Inc. to provide Cyanogen-based smartphones in India, under the brand name YU. [29] [30] [31]
As of 10 April 2016, Micromax announced a strategic partnership with digital payments company TranServ and major global payments technology company Visa to offer the next generation of payment solutions[ buzzword ] in India. [32]
Actors Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna were the first celebrities to endorse Micromax Mobiles. [33] Hugh Jackman was the brand ambassador of Micromax and appeared in a commercial in 2013 for its first flagship smartphone, the Canvas Turbo A250, [34] and for the Canvas 4 and Canvas Sliver 5 thereafter. In July 2013, actress Chitrangada Singh posed for the Canvas 4 smartphone in New Delhi. [35] Vighnesh Pande endorsed Micromax Canvas Unite 4 line of smartphones in 2017.
Micromax was recognized as an Emerging Company of the Year by V&D 100 Awards. [36]
In 2017, Rahul Sharma was conferred the Transformational Business Leader of the Year. [37]
In March 2013, Ericsson sued Micromax for infringement of Ericsson's eight patents registered in India that were essential to the 2G and 3G standards. The Delhi High Court ordered Micromax to pay royalty amounts to Ericsson based on the percentages of the net selling prices of the devices incorporating 2G and 3G standards. Around the time that Ericsson filed its patent infringement suit, Micromax filed a concurrent complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI), alleging that Ericsson had abused its allegedly dominant position by imposing exorbitant royalties for the use of its SEPs, thus violating The Competition Act of 2002. [38] As of February 2016, the CCI had yet to issue a final determinative ruling on the basis of Micromax's allegations.
In late 2014, Delhi High Court ruled that sales of the OnePlus One smartphone are blocked in India because Cyanogen OS signed an exclusive deal to sell Micromax mobile telephones only in India, although OnePlus One had a worldwide licensing deal. This move was seen as a monopoly to stem the sales of OnePlus One and other smartphone brands. [39] However, the High Court lifted the ban, allowing OnePlus One to be sold in India as the licensing deals with Cyanogen are different for both parties. [40]
In early 2015, a Reddit user found adware installing itself stealthily on their Micromax Canvas Fire A093 telephone without permission. The adware was also using excess telephone resources such as data, memory storage, and battery life. Further investigations by the XDA community found the advertisements were created by Adups, an AdPush company based in China. [41] [42]
Sony Mobile Communications Inc. was a multinational telecommunications company founded on October 1, 2001, as a joint venture between Sony Corporation and Ericsson. It was originally incorporated as Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, and headquartered in London, England, until Sony acquired Ericsson's share in the venture on February 16, 2012. Lenovo smartphones are marketed as the "LePhone" in mainland China and the "IdeaPhone" overseas are smartphones designed and manufactured by the Motorola Mobility, ZUK Mobile and Medion, divisions of Lenovo. The Sony Xperia U ST25i, codenamed Kumquat during its development, is an Android smartphone from Sony. It was launched at the 2012 Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, and is the second Sony-only branded smartphone after Sony acquired Ericsson's stake in Sony Ericsson in January 2012. The Xperia U has a 3.5-inch (88.9 mm) touch-screen with the mobile BRAVIA engine which optimises the picture, a 1 GHz dual core processor, a 5 mega-pixel rear camera, 0.3 mega-pixel front camera, 512 MB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal storage. The cap at the bottom of the phone is interchangeable. The phone is shipped with four caps: pink, white, yellow and black.
Micromax Canvas HD A116 is a dual-sim Android phablet by Micromax Mobile which is a rebranded Wiko Cink Five superseding the Micromax Canvas 2 A110. The device was exclusively launched with Snapdeal.com also found in Facebook for the advertisements on 14 February 2013 with featuring a 1.2 GHz Quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 5.0 IPS LCD (HD) screen.
Oppo N1 is an Android smartphone developed by Oppo Electronics. Unveiled on 23 September 2013, the N1 was released on 10 December 2013.
OnePlus Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., doing business as OnePlus, is a Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. It was a subsidiary of BBK Electronics, a company which also had Oppo.
The OnePlus One is an Android smartphone manufactured by OnePlus. Unveiled in April 2014, it is the first product by OnePlus. The OnePlus One was designed to compare favorably – in performance, quality, and price – to flagship devices by leading smartphone manufacturers. It was also intended to be developer friendly, and has since received a wide variety of ROMs and custom kernels from the community. The OnePlus One shipped to most markets with the Cyanogen OS operating system pre-installed, a commercial variant of CyanogenMod.
Android One is a family of third-party Android smartphones promoted by Google. In comparison to many third-party Android devices, which ship with a manufacturer's customized user interface and bundled apps, these devices run near-stock versions of Android with limited modifications, and a focus on Google services. Devices that run Android One receive OS updates for at least two years after their release, and security patches for at least three years.
YU Televentures was an Indian consumer electronics brand, it was incorporated in November 2014 as a joint venture between Cyanogen Inc and Micromax Informatics Limited. Also, YU holds official Cyanogen OS rights in India. In December 2016 the CyanogenMod developer group discontinued the Cyanogen OS. Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma owns a 99% controlling stake in YU while the remaining 1% is held by two other co-founders, Vikas Jain and Sumeet Arora. Later the YU subbrand of Micromax was discontinued by the brand and the official site redirected to Micromax's official website. YU Televentures was remade on 7 June 2019.

The Spice Dream Uno is a mobile phone co-developed by Google as a part of its Android One initiative. The initiative is headed by Sundar Pichai in an effort to provide affordable, yet feature-rich smartphones to developing nations. India is the first country to promote and sell the phone, which was first made available on September 10, 2014 through Flipkart for online customers. A few months later the smartphone was made available on Amazon, Saholic, Snapdeal and at some retail outlets in India such as Mobile Store and Spice Hotspot. The phone shares the same features as the Micromax Canvas A1.
YU Yureka is an Android-based cyanogen smartphone produced by YU Televentures, a subsidiary company of Micromax Informatics. It has a caption "Play God". The device was released in January 2015 exclusively on the Amazon India website at a price of INR 8,999. It is the first phone from the Yu brand and offers great specifications at low prices, focusing on the increased customisation options offered by the CyanogenMod operating system that Yu preloads onto its devices. The Yureka (Review) and Yuphoria (Review), Yu's next version, both offer the benefits of customisability and great specifications at competitive prices, and have enjoyed some success. Yureka is a dual SIM phone and it supports Cat4 4G LTE with TDD 2300 MHz and FDD 1800 MHz bands supported for India.
ZUK Mobile was a Chinese smartphone company founded in May 2015, and a subsidiary of Lenovo. It was headquartered in Beijing. The brand ceased operations in 2017, when Lenovo shifted its smartphone focus to Motorola.
