Mike Elston is an American football coach and former player who is currently the defensive line coach for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). Prior Mike Elston was the defensive line coach for the University of Michigan.
After his playing career as an outside linebacker at Michigan, [1] Elston began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Elston began his coaching career as a student assistant coach during the 1997 season. In 1998, Elston stepped into a video internship role in 1998 and then began assisting with the development of outside linebackers as a graduate assistant during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Elston left his alma mater to become the defensive ends coach at Eastern Michigan University in 2001. [2] In 2002, Elston became the defensive line coach and acted as a recruiting coordinator in 2002 and 2003.
In 2004, Elston left Eastern Michigan and joined the Central Michigan University coaching staff to become the defensive line coach. In 2005, he was elevated to co-defensive coordinator and continued his defensive line coaching responsibilities. In 2006, Elston became the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach.
In 2007, Elston left Central Michigan and joined the University of Cincinnati coaching staff to serve as a recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator, and tight ends coach. In 2009, he was promoted to assistant head coach and moved to coach the defensive line and serve as the special teams coordinator.
Elston left the University of Cincinnati and was hired by the University of Notre Dame in 2010 to serve as the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach. [3] [1] From 2012 to 2018, Elston held many positions while on the Notre Dame football staff that ranged from special teams coordinator and position coaching roles. On January 10, 2018, Elston was promoted to associate head coach and defensive line coach of the Notre Dame football program. [4]
In 2022, he decided to join Jim Harbaugh at his alma mater, [1] Michigan as the defensive line coach and the recruiting coordinator. [5] He helped lead the Wolverines to a CFP National Championship in 2023.
In 2024, Elston decided to leave Michigan and join the Los Angeles Chargers football staff with Jim Harbaugh [6] which would be his first position in the National Football League.
Greg Mattison is a former American football coach, and former player. He spent most of his career in college football as a defensive coach. Mattison coached at Michigan for eleven years, at Notre Dame for seven years, at Florida for three years, including the 2006 national championship team, and at Ohio State for two years. He also served as a defensive assistant for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL.
Brady Patrick Hoke is a former American football coach. He was most well known for serving as the head football coach at the University of Michigan from 2011 to 2014. He also served as the head football coach at Ball State (2003–2008) and San Diego State
Brian VanGorder is an American football coach and former player. He was the defensive coordinator at Bowling Green State University, a position he assumed in 2019. Prior to that, he was defensive coordinator at the University of Louisville. He served as the head football coach at Wayne State University from 1992 to 1994, and Georgia Southern University in 2006, compiling a career college football record of 19–25. VanGorder was the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) from 2008 to 2011, and also worked in the same capacity for the University of Georgia (2001–2004) and Auburn University (2012). VanGorder is married to the former Ruth Jones. His children are Molloy, Morgan, Mack, Montgomery, Malone, and Freddie.
Joe Barry is an American football coach who is the linebackers coach and run game coordinator for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). His career includes having served as the assistant head coach and linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Rams, as well as serving as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, and Green Bay Packers. Barry also previously served as an assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Francisco 49ers. Barry is the son of former coach Mike Barry.
Marcus Freeman is an American football coach and former linebacker who is the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He previously served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Notre Dame in 2021. Freeman has also previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Cincinnati, Purdue University, Kent State University, and Ohio State University.
William Sheridan is an American football coach who is currently the linebackers coach for the Arlington Renegades of the United Football League (UFL). Sheridan was previously the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He was also a coach for a number of college teams, including Notre Dame, Army, and Michigan State. From 2005 to 2008 he was the linebackers coach for the NFL's New York Giants. In 2009, he was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. He had stints with the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions before returning to NCAA football at Boston College in 2018. After two years there, he was hired by the Air Force Academy to be their new defensive line coach beginning in 2020. Sheridan in 2023 started coaching at his alma mater De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren, Michigan
The 1986 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan as a member of the Big Ten Conference during the 1986 NCAA Division I-A football season. In its 18th season under head coach Bo Schembechler, the team compiled an 11–2 record, tied for the Big Ten championship, outscored opponents by a total of 379 to 203, and was ranked No. 8 and No. 7, respectively, in the final AP and UPI polls. Late in the season, Schembechler passed Fielding H. Yost as the winningest coach in Michigan football history.
The 1985 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1985 Big Ten Conference football season. In their 17th year under head coach was Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled a 10–1–1 record, outscored all opponents by a combined total of 342 to 98, defeated five ranked opponents, suffered its sole loss against Iowa in a game matching the #1 and #2 teams in the AP Poll, defeated Nebraska in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl, and were ranked #2 in the final AP and Coaches Polls.
Don "Wink" Martindale is an American football coach, currently the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan. He last served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2023.

He previously served as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders of the NFL and spent 23 years coaching in the college football ranks. Johnson attended and played college football at Wittenberg University (1990–1993), where he was a back-to-back All-American and the All-North Coast Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and 1993.
