Modo is a member-owned carshare operator in British Columbia. It was incorporated in 1997, making it the oldest car-sharing organization in the area, the first carshare co-op in North America [1] and the first carshare in the English-speaking world. [2] Modo amalgamated with the Victoria Carshare Co-op in 2015 and now serves 25 municipalities in the Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria.

As of 2023, Modo had over 30,000 individual and business members and a fleet of approximately 1000 vehicles, including cars, trucks, SUVs, passenger and cargo vans, hybrids, battery electric vehicles [3] and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. [4] Modo has vehicles across British Columbia, including Vancouver, UBC, Richmond, Surrey, New Westminster, Burnaby, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Victoria, Oak Bay, Esquimalt and Saanich, [5] [6] and at the Horseshoe Bay, Tsawwassen, Langdale and Swartz Bay ferry terminals.

Modo offers two-way, roundtrip carsharing. Each of its vehicles has a designated parking space, with cars picked up and dropped off at the same location.

V-class ferry

The V-class ferries, also known as the Victoria class, originally included seven ferries operated by BC Ferries built between 1962 and 1965. The V class were a continuation of the previous Sidney-class design with some cosmetic changes and different engines. These vessels were the backbone of service on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route prior to the arrival of MV Spirit of British Columbia in 1993. Four of these vessels underwent vehicle capacity increases three times. The lead ship of the class, Queen of Victoria suffered significant damage in a collision in 1970.

Community CarShare was a non-profit, carsharing co-op in southern Ontario, that was founded in 1998. It ran into financial trouble and was acquired by Vrtucar on 27 March 2018.

Cityhop is New Zealand's first carsharing service operating in both Auckland and Wellington. It was founded by former Auckland City councillor Victoria Carter with JUCY, a rental car and campervan company. In 2018, Cityhop has 80 vehicles and more than 3000 active drivers. It was bought by Toyota New Zealand in November 2018 and had about 6,000 members and 120 vehicles in 2019. As of 2020 Cityhop now has over 150 cars and vans across Auckland and Wellington with over 10,000 members.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Evo Car Share</span>

Evo is a carsharing service in Greater Vancouver and Victoria, created by the British Columbia Automobile Association. The company offers exclusively Toyota Prius Hybrid vehicles with roof-top bike racks and features one-way point-to-point rentals. Users are charged by the minute, with hourly and daily rates available. Launched in March 2015, it currently serves most of Vancouver, and selected destinations in neighboring cities. In August 2021, the service was brought to Victoria. The company is considering moving into the Tri-Cities area in the future.

As of 2022, there were about 80,000 electric vehicles in British Columbia. As of September 2022, 17.5% of all new vehicles sold in the province were electric.
