Monon Township was established in 1836, and named after Big Monon Creek. [3]
The first post office was established at Lee, aka Oakdale, on the Monon Railroad. [4]

OAKDALE, OR LEE The only existing postoffice in Monon Township outside the village is Lee, in the northwest corner, about a mile from the Jasper County line on the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago (Monon) Railroad.
