Octonauts

Octonauts: Above & Beyond is an animated children's television series that is the successor and spin-off of Octonauts . [1] Produced by Mainframe Studios and Silvergate Media for Netflix, the spin-off series premiered on 7 September 2021. [2] The series follows a similar structure to the original Octonauts series, but is primarily focused on terrestrial creatures and habitats. In addition, to cover this global range of missions, more characters join the crew as main characters in the series.

Contents

A second season debuted on 2 May 2022 on Netflix. [3] A third season debuted on October 16, 2023 on CBeebies and the BBC iPlayer, [4] with an unspecificied release date on Netflix. A fourth season debuted on February 19, 2024 on CBeebies and the BBC iPlayer. [5]

Characters

The Octonauts, consisting of the Octopod crew and captain, are the recurring main characters.

Original main characters

These are the Octonauts that were in the original series, including the captain. They are unchanged in Above & Beyond, with the exception of the Vegimals, who all gain new voice actors. Everyone’s previous actors from the original series reprise their roles here.

Barnacles is the brave polar bear captain of the Octonauts. He knows how to drive any vehicle and is strong enough to lift a giant clam. Catchphrases: "Octonauts, let's do this", "Sound the Octo-Alert!", "Octonauts, to the launch bay!" and "Hold on, this could get bumpy".
KwaziiLieutenant and cryptozoologist Cat Rob Rackstraw A cat who speaks in a Cockney accent. Kwazii is a daredevil cat with a mysterious pirate past. He believes in many sea monsters such as the Nackerwhack, Tri-Toothed-Terror, Giant Shrimp Monster, Monster of Creepy Cove and others and likes to drive fast in the Gup-B. In the episode "The Octonauts and the Giant Spider Crab", it is revealed that he has a fear of spiders. Catchphrases: "Shiver me whiskers" and "Yeow!".

He is a penguin with a British accent (Spanish accent in the US version) and the medic of the Octonauts. He is not fond of scary situations, but if someone is hurt or in trouble he can be the bravest Octonaut of all. He has a younger brother called Pinto. Catchphrase: "Flappity flippers!".
Inkling (Prof.) Oceanographer and founder Dumbo octopus Keith Wickham An octopus who speaks in a posh accent. Inkling brought the Octonauts together, to study the oceans and have adventures. Catchphrase: "Fascinating!"
Shellington (Dr) Biologist Sea otter Keith Wickham A sea otter who speaks with a Scottish accent. Dr. Shellington is a biologist who assists the Octonauts on missions. He is not a very good driver and once crashed the GUP-D. Catchphrase: "Jumping jellyfish!" and "Fascinating".
TweakEngineer Rabbit Jo Wyatt A rabbit who speaks with a Southern US accent. Tweak lives and works in the launch bay. She often invents things like multiple GUPS, the Octo-Max suit, and the Friend Finder which was designed her friend, Sandy the leatherback sea turtle. She often refers to Captain Barnacles as "Cap". Catchphrases: "Right away, Cap!", "...faster than you can say 'buncha munchy crunchy carrots'!", and "Oh, me, oh, my!".

A dog who speaks with an Australian accent (American in the US version). Dashi is the photographer for the Octonauts, and takes care of all the computers aboard the Octopod. She's also a professional surfer.Dashi pilots the Octoray. Catchphrase: "Already on it, Captain!"

Note: Recent UK editions of the books changed Sauci's name to Dashi to match the television series. [ citation needed ]

TunipChef and horticulturist VegimalHelen WalshTunip is half-tuna, half-turnip. He loves to make kelp cakes and to work in the greenhouse. He often faints at shocking news. Tunip the Vegimal is the Octonauts' head cook and gardener. He is a Vegimal, a half-animal, half-vegetable creature capable of breathing on land as well as underwater. Tunip is very childish and innocent, always wanting to help the Octonauts in any way he can. He is the smallest main character in the Octonauts crew. Aside from cooking the meals, Tunip works in the garden, cultivating vegetables he can use to cook meals. His two favorite meals are fish biscuits and kelp cakes. Tunip, like all Vegimals, speaks Vegimalese. Since he was born, his first words were "Cheepa cheepa!, Cheepa cheepa!" and "Zuupa zuupa!"

New main characters

These are the characters that were added to the Octonauts crew in the series Above & Beyond. They are known as Octo-Agents, friends of the Octonauts who are stationed all over the world. They are experts and adventurers that assist the Octonauts on their new land missions. Paani and Selva are the only Octo-Agents so far that made their debut in Above & Beyond; all the others debuted in the original series. All Octonauts and Octo-Agents are able to sound the Octo-Alert via new pieces of equipment called Octo-Watches (except Barnacles, who still has his Octo-Compass, and Tunip).

He is a hydrologist who studies how water affects all kinds of beings. He is brave and daring, and also impulsive, similar to Kwazii. He gets off on the wrong foot with Kwazii, though, because Kwazii is the one who catches him trying to steal supplies from the team to help animals suffering from a drought.

Selva Botanist Iguana Elena SaurelSelva is an iguana who debuted in the third season. Originally living in the Amazon Rainforest, she spent most of her time tending to local plants and talking to them until she encountered Shellington and the Vegimals on a honey run. She later joined him in attending Captain Barnacles' surprise birthday party and afterward joined as an Octo-Agent.
BudAspiring Engineer Beaver Alan Marriott The son of a beaver family who taught Tweak everything she knew as an engineer during her youth. He later joined as Tweak's protege and spent much of his time traveling the world to study engineering in nature.

Other creatures that were introduced in the original series also make appearances in the series, with some even getting their own episodes. So far the only ones to do so, are The Invasive Species (With the exception of the Burmese Python) Spiny Sue the catfish, and Ronnie, Donnie and Lonnie the Monitor Lizards, from The Great Swamp Search, who all appear in The Monitor Lizards, and Phil the baby flamingo in The Nine Banded Armadillo.

Phil’s mother Flo, also appears in the same episode as Phil does, however off-screen.

Vehicles

These are the new vehicles that appear in Above & Beyond, in addition to the vehicles from the original series. These new vehicles specialize in terrestrial missions, and are thus referred to as "Terra-GUPs" (abbreviated as "TG"). All vehicles are equipped with an Octo-Alert.

After being beached on the Skeleton Coast following a storm, the crew encounters Paani, a macaque working as a hydrologist, and soon find themselves working to help a herd of elephants find water.

Note: This is the only episode of Above & Beyond to use the Octo-Alert sequence from the original series. A new sequence would be used from the next episode onwards.

During a volcanic eruption in Iceland, a volcano begins melting the ice of the glacier sitting on top of it, threatening to flood a valley below and take out 2 reindeer herds unless Dashi, Peso and Paani can evacuate them.

Kwazii sets off to assist Calico Jack in taking a group of bombardier beetles to a new island home, but they have to find the group's scout first, and he is proving difficult to catch.

Note: These episodes are the first in the series to use the redesigned Octo-Alert sequence, which would become a permanent fixture for the rest of the series' run.
