The EN71 (manufacturer's designation: Pafawag 5Bg/6Bg) is a four-carriage Polish EMU constructed for the Polish National Railways (PKP). It is based on the three-carriage EN57, but differs in that it has an additional motor carriage.
Originally developed for the Yugoslav market, the EN71 in Poland was designed to replace the EN57, which was struggling to cope with the steep inclines of the newly electrified Kraków – Zakopane route. Twenty EN71s were built at the PaFaWag works in 1976 and a further 30, or so, were converted from individual EN57 units in 1981–84. The original twenty EN71s had bodywork made from corrugated metal; units with numbers above 20 are converted from EN57s and can, therefore, have bodywork made from either flat or corrugated metal panels.
The EN71 is made up of four carriages: two with cabs; two with motors. The former (factory designation 5B) are marked as ra— where r stands for rozrządczy (the Polish term for control car) and a signifies that this is the front end of the train — and rb. The motor carriages (factory designation 6B) are classified as s, which is short for silnikowy, Polish for approximately engine-equipped. The sets can be connected together using Scharfenberg couplers, which prevent access between sets.
Each carriage is equipped with two sets of automatic, pneumatic powered doors and is split into three sections with seating — a central aisle running between the seats. The front and rearmost passenger sections of the control car are arranged differently from the rest: they contain foldable seats built into the wall of the carriage, as well as an extra set of doors that can be opened manually. According to need, these sections can also serve as compartments for staff or for transporting bicycles, pushchairs, and oversize luggage. The driver's cab is accessible via a separate, manually operated door at the front of the carriage. In contrast to the EN57 series, all EN71s (with exception to EN71-100) are equipped with racks for skis located next to the passenger compartment doors.
The EN71 series are operated by Przewozy Regionalne (Regional Transport) and Szybka Kolej Miejska (Fast Urban Railway) in the Tricity, EN71-046 was used for 3 weeks by Szybka Kolej Miejska in Warsaw. As has been mentioned in the History section, the new EN71s were set to work on the Kraków-Zakopane route, which had been electrified in 1975. In the years that followed, the series saw use on the routes to Krynica and Szklarska Poręba. At the beginning of the 1990s, several EN71s were modernised and became more comfortable (1st class carriages were also built). These new EN71s were assigned to a new service called RegioPlus before becoming superseded by the ED72 series.
Total of 37 four-carriage units were exported to Yugoslavia along with the three-carriage EN57 in the 1960s and 1970s. A few have recently returned to Poland, purchased by Koleje Mazowieckie (Masovia Railways) and various other companies.
PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście Sp. z o.o. ; approximate English translation Tricity Rapid Transit Rail Ltd., usually abbreviated SKM, is a public rapid transit and commuter rail system in Poland's Tricity area, in addition reaching out to Lębork, Kartuzy and Koscierzyna; its service extended in the past also to Słupsk, Pruszcz Gdański, Tczew, Elbląg, or even as far as to Iława.
ET21 is a name for a Polish electric freight locomotive produced between years 1957 to 1971 in Pafawag. It was the first post-war Polish electric locomotive, designed in 1955. Besides being delivered for PKP, ET21 locomotives were delivered to the mining industry, where they are used up to now.
EN57 is an electric multiple unit used by the Polish railway operator (PKP). It was built for suburban and long-distance services. Presently it is used by Polregio, SKM Trójmiasto, Koleje Dolnośląskie, Koleje Śląskie, Koleje Wielkopolskie and Koleje Mazowieckie companies in Poland.
The ED72 is a Polish four-car, long distance electric multiple unit operated by Przewozy Regionalne (Polregio). Like its cousin (EN71), the ED72 is based on the EN57 and became the basis for its successor: the ED73.

Warszawa Centralna, in English known as Warsaw Central Station, is the primary railway station in Warsaw, Poland. Completed in 1975, the station is located on the Warsaw Cross-City Line and features four underground island platforms with eight tracks in total. It is served by the long-distance domestic and international trains of PKP Intercity and Polregio as well as some of the regional trains operated by Koleje Mazowieckie. Adjacent to the north side of the building is a bus station that serves as the central hub for night bus lines, and Złote Tarasy shopping center.
A control car, cab car, control trailer, or driving trailer is a non-powered rail vehicle from which a train can be operated. As dedicated vehicles or regular passenger cars, they have one or two driver compartments with all the controls and gauges required to remotely operate the locomotive, including exterior locomotive equipment such as horns, bells, ploughs, and lights. They also have communications and safety systems such as GSM-R or European Train Control System (ETCS). Control cars enable push-pull operation when located on the end of a train opposite its locomotive by allowing the train to reverse direction at a terminus without moving the locomotive or turning the train around.
ET40 is the name for Bo′Bo′+Bo′Bo′ two-unit freight electric locomotive in service of Polish national rail operator, PKP. The locomotive was produced by Škoda Works in the Czechoslovakia.

EW51 was a three-car electric multiple unit, produced by the Lilpop, Rau i Loewenstein plants in Warsaw, H. Cegielski Spółka Akcyjna in Poznań and L. Zieleniewski in Sanok in the years 1936–1939. Electrical equipment was supplied by English Electric. The units were intended for suburban traffic in the Warsaw area. Before the war, the units had second- and third-class compartments. A total of 76 units were produced. Currently, the only surviving vehicle, EW51-36, is the property of the Museum Station in Warsaw. Restoration was completed in January 2019.
Newag 19WE is a standard-gauge, four-car electric multiple unit (EMU) produced between 2008 and 2010 at the Newag plant in Nowy Sącz. A total of 4 units were built, which are operated by Szybka Kolej Miejska in Warsaw.
PKP class EW55 were standard-gauge, three-car, high-platform electric multiple units produced between 1958 and 1962 in a quantity of 72 units by the Pafawag factory in Wrocław. Starting in 1959, they were directed to Katowice and Warsaw. In 1964, the vehicles ended service in Upper Silesia, and their operation was finally concluded in 1995.
Pafawag 3WE and 3WEa are standard gauge three-car high-platform electric multiple units produced by Pafawag in Wrocław between 1974 and 1980, with a total of 28 units built.
Pafawag 6WE and 6WEb are standard-gauge, three-car electric multiple units produced in Poland. They were manufactured in a quantity of 2 units at the Pafawag factory in Wrocław in 1990 for Szybka Kolej Miejska in the Tricity area. Since 2007, these units have been operated by Masovian Railways.
