People's Liberation Army Beijing Garrison District is a military district of corps grade (正军级) under the direct jurisdiction of the PLA Army HQ and the Central Military Commission. [2] The Garrison is responsible for the defense of the city of Beijing, the protection of all the state institutions in the capital, military mobilization in case of war, and civilian-military relations. [3]
The Beijing Garrison District was created from the old Beijing Military Region in August of 2016, as part of the 2015 reforms. [4] Due to the importance of the capital, and the sensitivity of its military affairs, the garrison was given its own military district, distinct to the Central Theater Command, and was placed directly under the control of the Central Military Commission.
Another peculiarity, only shared with the Xinjiang Military District, is that Beijing units preserved their traditional division/regiment structure rather than become brigades as elsewhere in the PLA. [5]
As of 2022, the Beijing Garrison District controlled the following units:
The 150th Division, then 11th Garrison Division of Shenyang Military Region was a military formation of the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China.
The 197th Army Division, then 5th Garrison Brigade of Beijing Military Region was a military formation of the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China.
The Inner Changshan Fort District, formerly known as the 78th Division, is a military formation in the People's Liberation Army of China. It is currently a coastal defense formation of the Jinan Military Region.
The Xinjiang Military District (新疆军区) is a special military area of the PLA at the Theater Deputy-grade.(副战区级). It is one of three districts that are directly under the Central Military Commission and its Joint Army Staff rather than under their Theater Command
The Central Guard Bureau of the General Office of the Chinese Communist Party, also nominally affiliated with the army and the police as the Guard Bureau of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission (中央军委联合参谋部警卫局) and the Ninth Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security (公安部九局) respectively, also known as the Central Security Bureau, is the organization responsible for overseeing the protection of senior party members, their families, and important foreign dignitaries in the People's Republic of China, though actual close protection is performed mostly by the Central Guard Regiment. It has been widely called the Central Guard Bureau since the Cultural Revolution. The bureau selects and controls the bodyguards of protectees; bodyguards are typically trained by the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The CGB is part of the internal security apparatus as protectees are constantly under surveillance by their bureau-selected bodyguards.
The 127th Combined Arms Brigade is the primary maneuver element of the 82nd Group Army in the Central Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and is its sole infantry division as of present.
The Central Guard Unit, formerly known as the Central Guard Regiment is a unit of the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) of the People's Republic of China responsible for providing security to senior members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including the General Secretary, the Politburo, and Central Committee as well as ministers and members of the State Council. It is a powerful political tool for the paramount leader as it can control access to, and conduct surveillance on, its charges.
