SS Adviser was a British cargo steamship. She was built in Scotland in 1939, and scrapped in Belgium in 1960. Throughout her career, the Charente Steam-Ship Company owned her, and Thomas & James Harrison of Liverpool managed her. She was the first of two Harrison Line ships that were called Adviser. The second was a container ship that was built in 1977. [1]
Between 1935 and 1944, Harrison Line took delivery of a class of 13 cargo steamships. The first two were launched in 1935: Inventor by D. and W. Henderson and Company in Glasgow; and Explorer by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson in Wallsend, County Durham. However, Lithgows in Port Glasgow built most of the class: Tribesman and Strategist in 1937; Scientist in 1938; Adviser and Barrister in 1939; Dalesman in 1940; and Prospector and Geologist in 1944. Charles Connell and Company in Scotstoun built Settler in 1939 and Trader in 1940; and Harland & Wolff in Govan, Glasgow built Novelist in 1940. [2]
Lithgows built Adviser as yard number 917; launched her on 23 February 1939; and completed her that April. [3] Her registered length was 445.5 ft (135.8 m); her beam was 56.5 ft (17.2 m); her depth was 29.6 ft (9.0 m); and her draught was 25 ft 9+1⁄2 in (7.86 m). Her tonnages were 6,348 GRT, 3,886 NRT, [4] and 9,000 DWT. [5] She had a very slightly raked bow, and a cruiser stern. [3]
Adviser had a single screw. Her main engine was a three-cylinder triple-expansion engine built by David Rowan & Co of Glasgow. It was augmented by an exhaust turbine, which drove the same propeller shaft via a Föttinger fluid coupling and double reduction gearing. The combined power of her two engines was rated at 867 NHP, [4] and gave her a speed of at least 12+1⁄2 knots (23 km/h). [6] In 1940, accommodation for 60 passengers was added to the ship. [7]
Adviser was registered in Liverpool. Her UK official number was 166263, and her call sign was GSSK. [4]
On 18 December 1940, Adviser left Glasgow and joined Convoy WS 5A, which was outward bound from Liverpool. The convoy included a dozen troopships and two of Adviser's sister ships: Barrister and Settler. By 24 December, its escort included the heavy cruisers Berwick and Shropshire; light cruisers Bonaventure and Dunedin; and aircraft carriers Argus and Furious. [8] At dawn on 25 December, the German cruiser Admiral Hipper attacked the convoy in the Atlantic, 700 nautical miles (1,300 km) west of Finisterre. Hipper attacked HMS Berwick; the merchant ships were ordered to disperse; and Bonaventure engaged Hipper. The German cruiser damaged Berwick and one of the troopships, Empire Trooper, but was forced to break off the attack. Adviser and her sister ships were undamaged. [9]
Adviser supported the Allied invasion of Madagascar in 1942. [7] She left Mombasa in Kenya on 3 September, and was in Majunga (Mahajanga) on the northwest coast of Madagascar from 10 to 28 September. From 1 to 31 October, when Vichy French forces were nearing defeat, she was in Tamatave (Toamasina) on the east coast. [10]
In Tamatave, Adviser loaded a cargo of graphite. On 6 November 1942 she reached Durban in South Africa, and on 14 November resumed her voyage, bound for Trinidad, New York, and the UK. At noon that day, U-178 sighted her and followed her. Aircraft attacked the U-boat at 14:23 hrs, but failed to damage it, and it resumed its pursuit of Adviser. At 23:23 hrs that night, U-178 fired two torpedoes, both of which missed. At 01:45 hrs on 15 November, the U-boat fired another two torpedoes, both of which hit Adviser, crippling her at position 32°03′S33°52′E / 32.050°S 33.867°E , about 200 nautical miles (370 km) southeast of Durban. U-178 saw her crew abandon ship, but then heard depth charges in the distance, and therefore had to leave the area without being able to wait to see whether the ship had sunk. In fact Adviser, despite being badly damaged, remained afloat, so her Master, Captain John Thurston Ling, and his crew, re-boarded her latre that morning. Two tugs towed her back to Durban, where she arrived on 19 November 1942. She was repaired there, and returned to service in August 1943. [11]
In 1949, there was a dispute between National Union of Seamen and Harrison Line about the condition of Adviser's crew accommodation. This led to a court hearing in Northfleet in Kent, between the NUS and the company. On 7 November that year, in the House of Commons, Sir Richard Acland, Bart, MP for Gravesend, asked James Callaghan, Minister of Transport, whether he would publish the reports about living conditions on the ship that his Department had received in recent weeks. Callaghan replied "Reports made by Ministry of Transport surveyors are confidential documents, but the facts were before the Court which tried cases concerning this ship at Northfleet and at which a surveyor gave evidence. As that evidence showed, an official of the National Union of Seamen agreed with the Surveyor that the accommodation was reasonable and habitable. It is not of the standard to be found in new ships and the owners have been asked to put right certain minor defects, and to consider the possibility of making improvements." [12]
In August 1952, at Blyth, Northumberland, Adviser was converted from coal to oil. On 4 or 5 September 1960 she arrived at Temse in Belgium, to be broken up by Jos. Boel & Fils. [7] [3]
SS Tregenna was a cargo steamship that was launched in England in 1919 and sunk by a U-boat in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1940 with the loss of 33 of her 37 crew. She was laid down as War Bulldog, but the Hain Steam Ship Co bought her before she was completed and renamed her Tregenna.
SS Hilary was a British steam passenger liner that was built in 1931 and scrapped in 1959. She spent much of her career on a scheduled service between Liverpool in England and Manaus in Brazil.
MV Domala was a British cargo liner that was launched in 1920 as Magvana, but completed in 1921 as Domala. She was the first major ocean-going passenger ship to be built in the United Kingdom as a motor ship.
SS Gairsoppa was a British cargo steamship that was built in 1919 and sunk in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1941. 85 of her complement were killed, and only one person survived. When she was sunk, her cargo included 7 million ounces of silver bullion. In 2012 and 2013 a US company recovered part of the bullion, and in 2014 the Royal Mint struck 20,000 silver coins from it.
SS Canonesa was a refrigerated cargo steamship that was built in Ireland in 1920 and sunk by a u-boat in the Atlantic Ocean in 1940.
SS Empire Energy was a cargo steamship. She was built in Germany in 1923 as Grete for small German tramp shipping company. In 1934 the Italian shipping magnate Achille Lauro bought her and renamed her Gabbiano.
SS Hatarana was a cargo steamship that was built as part of an emergency shipbuilding programme during the First World War, and sunk without loss of life in the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War. She was built as War Sailor, one of a batch of cargo ships that the United Kingdom ordered from Japanese shipyards. She was renamed Hatarana in 1919 when she changed owners.
SS Clan Macarthur was a British refrigerated cargo steamship. She was built for Cayzer, Irvine and Company's Clan Line Steamers Ltd as one of its Cameron-class steamships. She was launched in Greenock in 1936 and sunk in the Indian Ocean by enemy action in August 1943.
RMS Duchess of Atholl was one of a class of four steam turbine ocean liners built in Glasgow in 1927–29 for Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd's transatlantic service between Britain and Canada.
SS Westernland was a transatlantic ocean liner that was launched as Regina in Scotland in 1917, renamed Westernland in 1929 and was scrapped in 1947. She began her career as a troop ship repatriating US troops after the Armistice of 11 November 1918. In the Second World War, Westernland served as a troop ship, repair ship and destroyer depot ship.
SS Cathay was a P&O passenger steamship that was built in Scotland in 1925 and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea in 1942. In the Second World War she was first an armed merchant cruiser and then a troop ship. In 1942 she took part in Operation Torch, and was sunk in a German air raid off Bougie, Algeria.
SS Sagaing was a British passenger and cargo steamship that was launched in Scotland in 1924. Her peacetime route was a scheduled service between Glasgow or Liverpool, and Rangoon. In 1942, Japanese aircraft damaged her in Trincomalee Harbour in the Easter Sunday Raid on Ceylon. In 1943 she was scuttled to form a pier. In 2018 her wreck was raised, removed from the harbour, and scuttled in deeper water.
MV Seaforth was an Elder Dempster Lines cargo motor ship that traded between Liverpool and West Africa. She was launched in 1938 in Scotland and sunk in 1941 in the North Atlantic.
SS Jumna was a steam passenger liner that was built in Scotland in 1929 and sunk with all hands by a German cruiser on Christmas Day 1940. She was a ship in the fleet of James Nourse, Ltd, whose trade included taking indentured labourers from India to the British West Indies.
SS Tregarthen was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland for the Hain Steam Ship Co in 1936. She was sunk with all hands by a U-boat in 1941 in the Battle of the Atlantic.
SS Hartlebury was a cargo steamship that was launched in Scotland in 1934 for J&C Harrison Ltd. A U-boat sank her in the Barents Sea in 1942 when Hartlebury was a member of the Arctic convoy Convoy PQ 17.
SS Pennington Court was a British cargo steamship. She was launched in 1924 as Rochdale and renamed Pennington Court in 1927. In the Second World War she carried iron ore, grain and other supplies to Britain. She was sunk with all hands in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1942.
SS Verdala was a cargo and passenger steamship that was built in Scotland in 1913. Several times she changed owners and was renamed: as Mongolian Prince in 1917, Istok in 1928 and finally Maycrest in 1940.
SS St. Elwyn was a cargo steamship that was built in England in 1938 and owned by the South American Saint Line. A German U-boat sank her in the Atlantic Ocean in 1940, with the loss of 24 of her crew.
HMS Salopian was a motor ship that was built in 1926 as the passenger ship Shropshire. She belonged to Bibby Line, which ran passenger and cargo services between Rangoon in Burma and various ports in Great Britain, via the Suez Canal and Gibraltar. The Admiralty requisitioned Shropshire in 1939, had her converted into an armed merchant cruiser (AMC), and renamed her Salopian. A German U-boat sank her in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1941.
