A South African comic is a book or periodical published in South Africa that contains sequential art stories.

Notable South African comic book events

2013 saw the biggest ever Free Comic Book Day event organised in Cape Town by Readers Den, a comic shop in Cape Town. Local comic creators launch their new publications and showcase their work at these events. [13]

The 2014 Reader's Den Free Comic Book Day event saw the launch of 15 new South African comic books, with some creators traveling from different parts of South Africa for the event. [5] The Reader's Den Free Comic Book Day event was replaced in 2016 with FanCon Cape Town Comic Con, an international comics convention that is held annually in April.

The Open Book Comics Fest forms part of the annual Open Book Festival, which takes place every September in Cape Town. The Open Book Comics Fest promotes South African comic artists, illustrators and cartoonists and includes a marketplace of over 40 tables, curated by Moray Rhoda. [14]

Comic Con Africa debuted in Johannesburg in September 2018. [15] [16]

These comic book related events host market places where local comic creators sell and sign their self-published comics, launch new comics and deliver comic-industry-related talks, panels, and workshops.

Notable South African comic book creators

One of the most successful South African comic creators working on international comic titles and publications is Joe Daly, the creator of The Red Monkey, [17] Scrublands, [17] Highbone Theater [18] and the Dungeon Quest [17] series. Highbone Theater and Dungeon Quest are published in the USA by Fantagraphics Books. In Europe, Dungeon Quest is published by L'Association. It was nominated for the Ignatz and Eisner awards and won the coveted Angoulême Jury Prize. [19] His work has been described as "surreal, scatological, yet grounded in its depiction of loneliness and longing." [20] Slings & Arrows praised it as "an irreverent satire of geek culture." [21]

Other South African comic creators with international publications include Karl Stephan, [22] the author of Sparko, published by SLG; Sean Izaakse,[ citation needed ] an artist on Pathfinder for Dynamite Entertainment and various Marvel Comics titles; Jason Masters,[ citation needed ] who has worked for DC Comics on various titles, including Batman, and for Dynamite Entertainment on James Bond ; and Lauren Beukes and Dale Halvorsen, who co-wrote Survivors' Club for DC/Vertigo. [19] Artist Warren Louw[ citation needed ] illustrates variant covers for KRS Comics.

LJ Phillips has contributed work to Borderx, [23] Future Sci-Fi Tales, Horror Haikus, The Red Ten, Iron Nail Afternoon [24] and Dark Encounters among others. Her work has been published under her own name and a male pseudonym. Some of her articles on comics were published by Black Ship Books and included in Into the Comics-Verse: Comics and Contemporary Culture. [25] She has interviewed international comic creators such as Terry Moore, Stjepan Sejic, [26] Liam Sharp and Tracy Butler. [27] In August 2020, LJ was the recipient of a comic grant by Eisner-nominated publisher Shortbox. [28] and in 2022, was included in the Otherwise honours list. [29]

Afrikaans comics

There also exists a smaller Afrikaans scene. Notable examples include the alternative and acidic adult comics produced by the Bitterkomix collective, which was founded in 1992 by Anton Kannemeyer and Conrad Botes, as well as the gritty Coloureds series by brothers Nathan and Andre Trantraal.

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to attract new readers to independent comic book stores. It usually takes place on the first Saturday of May and is often cross-promoted with the release of a superhero film. Over two thousand participating stores give away millions of comic books annually. The event was proposed by Joe Field in the August 2001 issue of Comics & Games Retailer magazine and Free Comic Book Day was launched in 2002, coordinated by the industry's single large distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors. FCBD has become an official Children's Book Week event and has inspired similar events for German- and Dutch-language comics industries. The twenty-first edition of FCBD was held on May 6, 2023.

Trina Robbins is an American cartoonist. She was an early participant in the underground comix movement, and one of the first female artists in that movement. She is a member of the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.

John F. Ryan IV is an American alternative comics creator, writer, and animator. He created Angry Youth Comix, a comic book published by Fantagraphics, and "Blecky Yuckerella", a comic strip which originated in the alternative newspaper the Portland Mercury and now appears on Ryan's website. He also created Pig Goat Banana Cricket, a TV show made jointly with Dave Cooper that Nickelodeon picked up. He was the story editor for Looney Tunes Cartoons. In a throwback to the days of underground comix, Ryan's oeuvre is generally an attempt to be as shocking and politically incorrect as possible.

<i>The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library</i> Comic book reprints by Fantagraphics

The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library is a series of books collecting all of the comic book Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge stories written and drawn by Carl Barks, originally published between 1942 and Barks' retirement in June 1966. The series was launched in late 2011, and will comprise 6,000 plus pages over roughly 30 200- to 240-page volumes when it is finished.

Ben Oda was a Japanese-American letterer for comic books and comic strips.

Simon Hanselmann is an Australian-born cartoonist best known for his Megg, Mogg, and Owl series. Hanselmann has been nominated four times for an Ignatz Award, four times for an Eisner Award, twice for the Harvey Award and won Best Series at Angouleme 2018.

<i>Sunstone</i> (comics) Comic by Stjepan Šejić

Sunstone is an adult webcomic series written and illustrated by Stjepan Šejić which was first published on DeviantArt in 2011. Seven volumes of the ongoing series have been collected and published in trade paperback format by Image Comics and Top Cow Productions since 2014. The comic, described as an erotic romantic comedy, focuses on the relationship between a group of friends and their mutual interest in BDSM culture.

Tomica is a South African webcomic, written by David Covas Lourenco and drawn by Deon de Lange.

<i>The Don Rosa Library</i>

Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck: The Don Rosa Library is a series of books published by Fantagraphics Books, collecting all of the Scrooge McDuck and Donald Duck comic book stories written and drawn by Don Rosa, originally published between 1987 and 2006. Following up Fantagraphics' Floyd Gottfredson Library and The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library, this series was launched in 2014, and completed with the tenth and last volume in late 2018.

Disney Masters is a series of books collecting anthologies of critically acclaimed Walt Disney Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse international comic artists. Italian artist Romano Scarpa was the first featured creator in the series, in the volume titled The Delta Dimension. The publisher behind the project is Fantagraphics Books. The first book of the series was released in May 2018.

Prince Valiant is a series of hardcover books, published by Fantagraphics Books, that collects the Prince Valiant comic strip, written and drawn by Hal Foster. The release of the series began in August 2009.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Comikaza</span>

Comikaza is the first brick and mortar comic book store in Israel. In 2016 it was nominated for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

The Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia is an award for given to a comic book originally published in Asia and reprinted for sale in the United States of America. Comics by creators from Japan, South Korea, China, and Singapore have been nominated.

The Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material is an award for "creative achievement" in American comic books for material not originally published or available in the United States of America.

The Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic is an award for "creative achievement" in American comic books for material originally published digitally.
