The South Australian Railways M Class (1st) locomotives were originally built by the Avonside Engine Company for the Canterbury Provincial Railways in 1868 to 1874. They were later sent to South Australia in 1878 and were first in service on the South Australian Railways between 1880 and 1881. [1]

History

The two earlier built locomotives (Nos. 44 & 46) were fitted out with well tanks instead of side tanks, while the other M class locomotives (Nos. 43, 45 and 47) did have side tanks.

On their journey to South Australia, the ship which was carrying the M Class (as well as other locomotives destined for the country) got wrecked off New Zealand. All the locomotives on board were eventually salvaged, and the M Class entered service on the Port line and its branch lines. They also occasionally worked on the privately operated Glanville to Largs Bay railway line. Their duties included shunting on the wharves, and later on in their life they worked trains to Henley Beach, Outer Harbour, Semaphore and on mixed traffic trains on the Northern railway line. The class was extinct by 1922. [2]

While the first locomotives of this wheel arrangement were tender engines, the configuration was later often used for tank engines, which is noted by adding letter suffixes to the configuration, such as 0-4-2T for a conventional side-tank locomotive, 0-4-2ST for a saddle-tank locomotive, 0-4-2WT for a well-tank locomotive and 0-4-2RT for a rack-equipped tank locomotive. The arrangement is sometimes known as Olomana after a Hawaiian 0-4-2 locomotive of 1883.

The GWR 5700 Class, or 57xx class, is a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive built by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and British Railways (BR) between 1929 and 1950. The London and South Western Railway (LSWR) 0298 Class or Beattie Well Tank is a class of British steam locomotive. They are 2-4-0WTs, originally built between 1863 and 1875 for use on passenger services in the suburbs of London, but later used on rural services in South West England. Out of a total production of 85, two locomotives have been preserved in an operational condition.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LB&SCR A1 class</span> Class of British 0-6-0T steam locomotives

The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) A1 class is a class of British 0-6-0T steam locomotive. Designed by William Stroudley, 50 members of the class were built in 1872 and between 1874 and 1880, all at Brighton railway works. The class has received several nicknames, initially being known as "Rooters" by their south London crews. However, the engines were more famously known as "Terriers" on account of the distinctive 'bark' of the exhaust beat. Later in their careers, some engines were known as "Hayling Billy" on account of their work on the Hayling Island branch line. A pub of this name on the island was briefly home to the engine which is now No. W8 Freshwater.

The Northern Counties Committee (NCC) Class U2 4-4-0 passenger steam locomotives consisted of 18 locomotives built for service in north-east Ireland. Ten of the engines were new builds supplied by the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) or constructed at the NCC's York Road works. The remainder were rebuilds of existing locomotives.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SER O class</span>

The South Eastern Railway (SER) O Class was a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed for freight work, and were the main freight engines of the SER, and later the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) for a number of years. However, they were displaced by the more powerful C class locomotives following the amalgamation of the South Eastern Railway and London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR) in 1899. This relegated the class to working on the numerous branch lines in Kent, on both passenger and freight work. They worked most notably on the Kent & East Sussex Railway and East Kent Railway, operating coal trains from the Kent coal fields to London, as well as shunting work at such locations as Shepherds Well, Hoo Junction and Ashford. The majority were withdrawn before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, and those that remained were slowly withdrawn from nationalisation onwards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Richmond Vale railway line</span> Former colliery railway line in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia

The Richmond Vale Railway was a 4 ft 8+12 in colliery railway line in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia, servicing coal mines at Minmi, Stockrington, Pelaw Main and Richmond Main. It was over 26 km (16 mi) long and passed through three tunnels, and was the last commercially operated railway in Australia to use steam locomotives.

Between 1854 when the Shrewsbury and Chester and Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railways were absorbed by the Great Western Railway, and 1864 when he moved south to Swindon Works, Joseph Armstrong occupied the post of the GWR's Locomotive Superintendent, Northern Division, at Wolverhampton Works. For ten years the task of providing new locomotives for the GWR's newly acquired standard gauge lines fell jointly to Armstrong and to his superior Daniel Gooch, the railway's principal Locomotive Superintendent who was based at Paddington.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">GWR 455 Class</span>

The GWR 455 Class, also called the "Metropolitan" or "Metro" Tanks, was a series of 140 2-4-0T locomotives built for the Great Western Railway, originally for their London suburban services, including running on the underground section of the Metropolitan Railway, the source of their nickname. Later on the class was seen on many other parts of the GWR system. Sixty "Metro" Tanks were built, from 1868 onwards, during the lifetime of their designer, Joseph Armstrong. His successor William Dean regarded the class so highly that he would add a further 80, the final 20 examples appearing as late as 1899. The "Metros" were all built at Swindon Works, in nine lots of ten or 20 engines each.

The South Australian Railways C Class locomotives were built by the Robert Stephenson and Company for the South Australian Railways in 1856. The first locomotive was in service by November 1856, with the second engine in service by January 1857. They were both withdrawn after long service lives, with No. 5 being withdrawn after 50 years working on the SAR. No. 6 lasted well into Commissioner Webbs era, finally being withdrawn in 1926 at almost 70 years old.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Australian Railways F class (1869)</span> SAR steam locomotive class built 1869

The two South Australian Railways F Class (1st) locomotives were built in England in 1869 by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol. No. 21 entered service on the South Australian Railways in September 1869; No. 22 followed in October.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Australian Railways G class</span>

The South Australian Railways G Class locomotives first appeared on the South Australian Railways in 1869 after being purchased from Beyer, Peacock and Company. More locomotives were purchased and in service by 1880, and again in 1886. The G class was extinct by 1923.

The South Australian Railways Gd Class locomotives were built by Beyer, Peacock and Company for service on the Holdfast Bay railway line in 1880. They were numbered 4 and 5. In November 1881, both engines were sold to the Glenelg Railway Company and became their number 9 and 10. These locomotives entered service on the South Australian Railways in December 1899, following their purchase of the Glenelg Railway Company and thus classed Gd No. 163 and 164. Nos. 163 and 164 were both condemned as of the 6th of February 1925 and ultimately scrapped.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Australian Railways H class</span> Class of 9 Australian 4-4-0 locomotives

The South Australian Railways H Class locomotives were built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1870 for the South Australian Railways. The first of three numbered 25, 26 and 27 were all in service by June 1871. After being a well received class, two more locomotives were ordered and were in service by October 1872. Nos. 30 and 31 arrived in August 1874. The final two locomotives ordered for the SAR arrived in August 1877 and were numbered 2 and 3. These locomotives worked on the SAR system for many years, with only one member of the class being withdrawn in 1888. The rest of the class were rebuilt over the years and lasted well into the next century with, the final locomotive being withdrawn by 1930.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Australian Railways K class (broad gauge)</span> Class of South Australian Railways broad-gauge steam locomotive delivered between 1879 and 1884

Eighteen South Australian Railways K class (broad-gauge) locomotives were built by Beyer, Peacock and Company for the South Australian Railways (SAR) between 1878 and 1884. Despite having a fundamental design flaw that affected their original role as light-line passenger locomotives, they eventually performed shunting duties exclusively. They operated for six decades.

Four South Australian Railways L class broad-gauge locomotives with a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement were built by Beyer, Peacock and Company in 1879 and entered service in March–April 1880. They were condemned in 1928 and 1931, and were subsequently scrapped.

The South Australian Railways O Class (2nd) locomotive was a 4-4-0WT built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1868 for the Launceston and Western Railway Company. It entered service with the South Australian Railways in 1912 and was cut up in 1930.
