The City of Augusta, Georgia has an expansive transport network. It consists of two airports, various road bridges, national and local bus service, a highway and street network, freight train service, and boat tours and marinas.
Augusta is served by Augusta Regional Airport, formerly known as "Bush Field" (and still referred to as such on highway signs). It is located approximately 5.6 miles (9.0 km) south of downtown, on Doug Barnard Parkway. It is a relatively small airport, especially when compared to more major airports, such as Atlanta's Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It has one concrete and one asphalt runway. [1] It opened in 1941 as a training facility for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC; the predecessor of the United States Air Force). [2] It became the commercial airport for the city in 1950. [2] In 2000, the facility was renamed "Augusta Regional Airport at Bush Field". [2]
Daniel Field is a public use airport. It is located approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of downtown, at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Wrightsboro Road. This airport is owned by the City of Augusta. It has two asphalt runways. [3] It was dedicated in late 1927. During World War II, it also served as a training facility of the USAAC, and was known as "Daniel Army Airfield". At the end of 1945, it was returned to civilian use.

Southeastern Stages serves Augusta, via a bus station on Broad Street. [20] There is also an intercity bus station on Fort Eisenhower. [20] Greyhound Lines also uses this bus station. [21] The public can access the Army base for certain events and services, such as utilizing this station. They have to provide proper identification. [22]
The city has an extensive system of bus service. Augusta Transit operates nine routes throughout the area. [23] These routes are:

Its western segment is an important road in McDuffie County, it extends from Georgia State Route 17 (SR 17) in Thomson to its northern terminus where US 78 / SR 10 / SR 17 crosses over the Little River on the Wilkes–McDuffie county line south of Aonia. The eastern segment extends from where Georgia State Route 47 (SR 47) crosses over the Little River on the Lincoln–Columbia county line northwest of Pollards Corner to where it meets its eastern terminus at SR 28's interchange of Broad Street in Augusta. The Augusta portion of Washington Road is a 4.1-mile-long (6.6 km) route. [65] It connects Augusta National Golf Club, Garrett Elementary School, and Lake Olmstead. The January 2008 draft of the Freight Profile for the Augusta Regional Transportation Study indicates that rail cargo accounts for 7% of all freight in the region by weight (2006 TRANSEARCH). Some of the leading commodities shipped out of Augusta are clay, concrete, glass, and stone products. The leading commodity terminating in the area is lumber and wood products. [91]
At-grade railroad crossings are located on many roads throughout the city. The crossings have been a part of city life for many years. Solutions have been sought to reduce the inevitable conflicts between railroad, motor vehicle, and pedestrian traffic. The availability of rail service is a major attraction for new industry and maintaining existing industry. [91]
Passenger rail service is currently not available in Augusta. Its last long-distance passenger train was the Southern Railway's Aiken-Augusta Special, which had its last run in 1966. [92] Other companies serving the city were the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and the Central of Georgia Railway. [93] In 1999, the Georgia Transportation Board approved a long-range plan to provide inter-city passenger rail service between Atlanta and other major cities across the state. [91]
There are two freight providers: Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) and CSX. [91]
The NS mainline track, known as the R-Line, enters the city from the north, crossing the Savannah River and traveling through downtown on the right-of-way of 6th Street, and is known as the Augusta District. The mainline continues to the southeast toward Savannah. NS has two railroad yards in Augusta: the main classification yard is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) south of downtown. Its second yard, the Nixon Yard, is south of Augusta Regional Airport near the International Paper plant. [91]
The CSX mainline travels through the city in what is essentially an east–west direction. This line, known partially as the Augusta and McCormick subdivisions, connects Augusta to Spartanburg, South Carolina and Savannah. There is a second CSX line, partially known as the Georgia Subdivision, and was formerly owned by Georgia Railroad and Banking Company, is a connection to Atlanta. CSX has two railroad yards in the city. The main railroad yard is located off of Laney Walker Boulevard southeast of downtown. The yard covers approximately 117 acres (47 ha). It consists of an inbound receiving yard and an outbound classification yard. Its second yard, the Harrisonville Yard, is located on 48 acres (19 ha) between Olive Road and Wrightsboro Road. [91]
On the Augusta Canal, there are boat tours. These tours are provided using a Petersburg boat, similar to those used on the Savannah River in the 19th century. They show the textile mills, the Confederate Powderworks, and two of Georgia's only remaining 18th century houses. [94]
Augusta has two marinas, the Augusta Riverfront Marina and the Riverwalk Marina, also known as the 5th Street Marina. The Riverfront Marina has the following amenities: access to the riverfront, boat slip rentals, boat ramp, and picnic shelter. The Riverwalk Marina has the following amenities: a gift shop, public boat slip, boat slip rentals, playground, picnic area, and fuel service. [95] Riverfront Marina is located on Riverfront Drive, in the East Augusta portion of the city, east of Olde Town. [96] Riverwalk Marina is off of 5th Street, just before it crosses over the Savannah River. [97]
Interstate 16 (I-16), also known as Jim Gillis Historic Savannah Parkway, is an east–west Interstate Highway located entirely within the US state of Georgia. It carries the hidden designation of State Route 404 (SR 404) for its entire length. I-16 travels from downtown Macon, at an interchange with I-75 and SR 540 to downtown Savannah at Montgomery Street (exit 167B). It also passes through or near the communities of Dublin, Metter, and Pooler. I-16's unsigned designation of SR 404 has a spur that is signed in Savannah.
State Route 141 (SR 141) is a 34.1-mile-long (54.9 km) state highway that runs southwest-to-northeast in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects the Buckhead area of Atlanta with Cumming. Its routing exists within portions of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Forsyth counties.
U.S. Route 378 (US 378) is a spur of US 78 in the U.S. states of Georgia and South Carolina. The U.S. Highway runs 234.30 miles (377.07 km) from US 78, Georgia State Route 10 (SR 10), SR 17, and SR 47 in Washington, Georgia, east to US 501 Business in Conway, South Carolina. US 378 connects the Central Savannah River Area in both states with the Midlands and Pee Dee regions of South Carolina. The U.S. Highway's western portion, which connects Washington and Lincolnton in Georgia and McCormick, Saluda, and Lexington in South Carolina, is mainly a rural highway. US 378 is a major suburban and urban highway through Lexington and South Carolina's state capital, Columbia. The highway has a lengthy concurrency with US 76 between Columbia and Sumter and serves as a major route between the Midlands and the Myrtle Beach area, between which the highway has a business route through Lake City.
State Route 10 (SR 10) is a 172.3-mile-long (277.3 km) state highway in the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels from Downtown Atlanta to the South Carolina state line in Augusta. This highway, along with U.S. Route 78 (US 78), connect three of the biggest metro areas of the state together: Atlanta, Athens, and Augusta. It travels concurrently with US 78 in three sections: from Atlanta to Druid Hills; from near Stone Mountain to near Athens; and from Athens to its eastern terminus, for a total of 149.2 miles (240.1 km), or approximately 86.6 percent of its route.
State Route 4 (SR 4) is a state highway in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Except for its northernmost portion, it is completely concurrent for its entire length with U.S. Route 1 (US 1). It traverses south-to-north through portions of Charlton, Ware, Bacon, Appling, Toombs, Emanuel, Jefferson, and Richmond counties in the southeastern and east-central parts of the state. The highway begins at the Florida state line, on US 1/US 23/US 301/SR 15 at the St. Marys River. It travels to its northern terminus at the South Carolina state line, on the Augusta–North Augusta, South Carolina city line, on US 25 Business at the Savannah River.
U.S. Highway 17 (US 17) is a 124.20-mile-long (199.88 km) United States Numbered Highway in the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels south–north near the Atlantic Ocean, serving the Brunswick and Savannah metropolitan areas on its path from Florida at the St. Marys River to South Carolina at the Savannah River. Except for part of the highway in Savannah, which is concurrent with Interstate 16 and SR 404 Spur to the Talmadge Memorial Bridge to Hutchinson Island, US 17 is concurrent with SR 25. SR 25 uses an older western alignment of US 17 into South Carolina.
State Route 25 (SR 25) is a state highway in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels south-to-north near the Atlantic Ocean, serving the Brunswick and Savannah metropolitan areas on its path from the Florida state line at the St. Marys River to the South Carolina state line at the Little Back River, a channel of the Savannah River. Except for the northern part of the highway, from Savannah to Port Wentworth, it is concurrent with U.S. Route 17 (US 17) for its entire length.
State Route 28 (SR 28) is a 25.7-mile-long (41.4 km) state highway in the U.S. state of Georgia. It exists in two distinct segments separated by the northern segment of South Carolina Highway 28 (SC 28), which connects the two segments. The southern segment is entirely within the Augusta metropolitan area. The northern segment is located in the northeastern corner of the Chattooga River District of the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest. SR 28 consists of Georgia's segments of a multi-state Route 28 that includes two segments of SC 28 and one segment of North Carolina Highway 28 (NC 28). The northern segment is a south-to-north highway and the roadway it uses is unnamed. However, the southern segment is a west-to-east highway, and the roads it uses are known as Furys Ferry Road from the Furys Ferry Bridge at the South Carolina state line to the intersection with SR 104 Conn. in Augusta, Washington Road in the northern part of Augusta, John C. Calhoun Expressway, Greene Street, 5th Street, and Broad Street in downtown Augusta, and Sand Bar Ferry Road in the northeastern part of Augusta.
State Route 21 (SR 21) is an 84.4-mile-long (135.8 km) state highway that travels southeast-to-northwest through portions of Chatham, Effingham, Screven, and Jenkins counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects the Savannah and Millen areas, via Garden City, Port Wentworth, Rincon, Springfield, and Sylvania.
State Route 26 (SR 26) is a 271.1-mile-long (436.3 km) state highway that travels west-to-east through portions of Chattahoochee, Marion, Schley, Macon, Houston, Pulaski, Bleckley, Laurens, Johnson, Emanuel, Bulloch, Bryan, Effingham, and Chatham counties through the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It crosses nearly the entire width of the state, connecting Cusseta, on the southeastern edge of Fort Benning, near Columbus to Tybee Island on the Atlantic coast near Savannah, via Buena Vista, Ellaville, Oglethorpe, Hawkinsville, Cochran, Dublin, Swainsboro, Statesboro, and Savannah.
State Route 56 (SR 56) is an inverted question mark-shaped state highway that travels south-to-north, with a western loop around Vidalia. It is 140.3-mile-long (225.8 km) and travels through portions of Tattnall, Toombs, Montgomery, Treutlen, Emanuel, Burke, and Richmond counties in the southeastern and east-central parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects the Reidsville and Augusta areas, via Swainsboro and Waynesboro.
State Route 104 (SR 104) is a 22.3-mile-long (35.9 km) state highway in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Most of its eastern portion is an urban corridor in the Augusta metropolitan area. It travels within portions of Columbia and Richmond counties. It is known as Washington Road from its western terminus to the Columbia–Richmond county line. On both sides of the county line, it is known as Pleasant Home Road. It is known as Riverwatch Parkway from just west of the county line to the northern part of downtown Augusta. In downtown, it is known as part of Jones Street and Reynolds Street.
Several special routes of U.S. Route 1 (US 1) exist, from Florida to Maine. In order from south to north, separated by type, these special routes are as follows.
U.S. Route 80 (US 80) is a 296-mile-long (476 km) U.S. Highway in the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels west-to-east from the Alabama state line in Columbus across the central portion of the state through cities such as Macon, Dublin, Statesboro, and Savannah to connect to its eastern terminus at an intersection with Tybrisa Street and Inlet Avenue in Tybee Island, near the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the roadway continues as Butler Avenue. US-80 is the main east-west non-Interstate route through Georgia.
U.S. Route 278 (US 278) in the U.S. state of Georgia is an east–west United States Highway traversing the north-central portion of the state. The highway travels from the Alabama state line near Esom Hill to the South Carolina state line where it crosses the Savannah River in the Augusta metropolitan area.
U.S. Route 25 (US 25) is a U.S. Highway that travels from Brunswick, Georgia to the Kentucky-Ohio state line, where Covington, Kentucky meets Cincinnati, Ohio at the Ohio River. In the U.S. state of Georgia, US 25 is as a 190.0-mile-long (305.8 km) highway that travels south to north in the eastern part of the state, near the Atlantic Ocean, serving Brunswick, Statesboro, and Augusta on its path from Brunswick to South Carolina at the Savannah River. Its routing travels through portions of Glynn, Wayne, Long, Tattnall, Evans, Bulloch, Jenkins, Burke, and Richmond counties.

Wrightsboro Road is a 45.0-mile-long (72.4 km) major road in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia, traveling through the northwestern part of McDuffie County, the extreme northern part of Warren County, the southeastern part of Wilkes County, the southern part of Columbia County, and the northeastern part of Richmond County.
Gordon Highway is a 22.8-mile-long (36.7 km) major highway in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia, traveling through the southern part of Columbia County and the northeastern part of Richmond County. It is named after Confederate general John Brown Gordon. At its western end, it is a relatively rural highway, but at its eastern end, it is an urban corridor of the Augusta metropolitan area. It connects Harlem and rural areas of southern Columbia County with Augusta and North Augusta, South Carolina. It also serves as the two main entry points to Fort Eisenhower, formerly Fort Gordon. Its entire length, from the southeastern edge of Harlem to the Georgia–South Carolina state line on the northeastern edge of Augusta, is signed as part of US 78/US 278/SR 10. In Augusta, it is signed as parts of US 1 and US 25/SR 121.
