Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson, also known as Unity, is a collaborative musical project formed to create a Michael Jackson tribute album inspired by Latin music styles. The leader of the project is Peruvian-American musician Tony Succar, and vocals are provided by a number of leading artists in Latin music genres, especially salsa. Succar's aim with the project was to celebrate Jackson's music and legacy by combining it with a Latin-orchestrated sound. The stated goal is "to honor the legacy of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. By remaining true to his artistic essence, excellence, and music we seek to unify all human beings." [1] Upon its release, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart. [2]
When Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, Succar was in the final year of a graduate programme at Florida International University. [3] In October of that year Succar was planning a Halloween concert when the client asked him to close the performance with Jackson's song Thriller . At the time Succar had a predominantly salsa band, so he decided to create and perform a salsa arrangement of Thriller. The song was well received by the audience [3] and Succar decided to produce an album of Jackson covers as a tribute. He did not have the funds to begin production, so decided to use Kickstarter to raise the necessary financing. This paid for the initial stages of production and Succar funded ongoing costs by working locally with his band. Succar also faced challenges in obtaining licenses to use Jackson's music; the license for Thriller alone took three years to be granted.
Succar initially worked with fellow FIU students to produce new versions of Jackson's songs in a Latin style. The music was rewritten to include tropical rhythms from the Caribbean. Other influences were jazz, world music and American pop. Succar wanted high-profile singers to provide the vocals for the album. Kevin Ceballo was the first artist to sign up, followed by Tito Nieves. Nieves was initially reluctant due to other commitments, but a backing vocalist who was involved in the project contacted him directly; after listening to a demo of a track from the album Nieves agreed to take part. [3] He recorded two tracks for the album, and his involvement helped Succar bring several other prominent vocalists on board; these include salsa singers La India, [4] Michael Stuart, Jon Secada, Jean Rodríguez, Obie Bermúdez and Jennifer Peña. [5] Secada had previously recorded with Jackson on the 2001 charity single What More Can I Give .
In total around 90 musicians have contributed to the album. [6] Recording has taken place in several major US cities, as well as in Puerto Rico and Peru.
In late 2012 Succar and the Unity Project performed as the showcase act at a TEDx event at Florida International University. [7] [8] Featured performers included Judith Hill, Sheila E. and Jean Rodríguez. [9] Hill had previously sung with Jackson during rehearsals for the cancelled This Is It concerts. The Miami nightclub Ball & Chain hosted the group in June 2015. [10] A special performance was captured on video at the headquarters of SiriusXM satellite radio in December 2015, [11] and a full show was delivered in Aruba at the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival in September 2016. [12] [13] The group performed at the October 2018 Miami Salsa Conference. [14]
An album containing 12 tracks produced by Unity was released in April 2015.

A single from the album, "I Want You Back", was released in September 2012. [15]
A second single entitled "Sera que no me amas" was released through iTunes on October 17, 2012. [16] [17] This is a remake of the 1978 hit "Blame it on the Boogie" by the Jackson 5.
Raul Da Gama summarised the album as "Suffice it to say that this is no ordinary Latin Tribute. It is a rocking rhythmic re-invention of the music of Michael Jackson... [a] maddeningly brilliant album. And it’s touching and toe-tapping in equal measure." [18]
Humberto "Tito" Nieves is a Puerto Rican musician who became one of the leading salsa singers of the 1980s and the early 1990s.
Linda Bell Viera Caballero, known professionally as La India, is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter of salsa, house music and Latin pop. La India has been nominated for both Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, winning the Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album for the Intensamente La India Con Canciones De Juan Gabriel album.
Eddie Palmieri is an American Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Corsican and Puerto Rican ancestry. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive.
Salvador "Sal" Cuevas was an American salsa bassist known for his association with the Fania All-Stars from 1978 to 1985. Although he also played the upright bass, he was one of the most popular electric bassists in the New York salsa scene, often playing in a funk style. "He was the first to bring the slaps and funk style that he learned from R&B, Funk, and Jazz music, into Salsa music."
Juan Francisco Secada Ramírez, better known as Jon Secada, is a Cuban-born American singer, songwriter and record producer. He has won two Grammy Awards and sold 15 million records, making him one of the best-selling Latin music artists. His music fuses funk, soul music, pop, and Latin percussion.
Salsa Romántica is a soft form of salsa music that emerged between the mid-1980s and early 1990s in New York City, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. It has been the most commercially successful form of salsa in the last 20 years, despite criticism that it is a pale imitation of "real" salsa, often called "salsa dura".

RMM Records, also known as RMM Records & Video Corp, was an independent Latin music record label established in 1987 and based in New York City. The label was most active during the late 1980s and early 1990s and produced primarily salsa, Latin jazz, and merengue music. At its peak, RMM Records employed 55 staff members and had distribution deals in 42 cities around the world, occupying 9,000 square feet in two floors at its Soho headquarters. The label was established by Fania Records promoter Ralph Mercado, who had established RMM Management in 1972 as an artist management and booking agency, providing bookings for Latin artists Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and Ray Barretto.
Jorge Manuel López, also known as Giro Lopez, is a Puerto Rican salsa musician. Giro began his career as part of the boy band of Puerto Rico called Los Chicos. Two singles by "Giro" Jorge López, "Si Tu Supieras" and "Mi Forma de Sentir", reached #1 on the Latin Tropical Airplay. In 1995, Giro received a Lo Nuestro award for "New Tropical Singer of the Year" and in 1996 also was nominated for Best Male Tropical Singer of the Year. He won a Gold Record at the New Jersey OTT Awards, presented by Billboard magazine.

Bagué is also known for signing, developing and promoting Latin music artists internationally in his capacity as a vice president of US Latin East Coast and Puerto Rico for peermusic. Bagué has been with this independent, multi-national music publishing firm for nearly two decades.
Jean Carlos Rodríguez López-Cepero, also known as Jean, is a Puerto Rican singer, the younger brother of Luis Fonsi. Rodríguez has released a handful of solo albums and mixtapes, hitting number one on Billboard's Latin Pop Airplay chart with the single "Duele" in 2006. As a member of the production duo Coastcity, he co-produced the Spanish-language version of "Hey Ma" by Pitbull, J Balvin and Camila Cabello in 2017; the Spanish-language video passed 400 million views on YouTube, and the song was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
