Westroads Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska at the intersection of 100th and Dodge Streets (U.S. Route 6). It is the largest mall in Nebraska. [2] The mall's anchor stores are The Container Store, Von Maur, JCPenney, Dick's Sporting Goods, and AMC Theatres.
Designed by real estate developer John Wiebe, Westroads Mall opened in 1967. [3] Prudential Financial purchased the mall from Wiebe for $45 million in 1977. In 1997, General Growth Properties acquired the mall from Prudential. The mall was owned by both General Growth (51% share) and Canadian property development company Ivanhoe Cambridge (49% share); it was managed by General Growth Properties on behalf of the venture. General Growth Properties acquired the 49% that it didn't previously own on April 5, 2012.
The mall was renovated several times: in 1990, 1995, 1999 and 2003 and again in 2013-2014, which included the addition of an H&M store and Wi-Fi. [4]
In May 1991, a food court opened; it was replaced in 2015 by Flagship Commons, a food hall concept located elsewhere in the mall and operated by Flagship Restaurant Group. [5] [6] On October 22, 2016, The Container Store opened in the former food court space. [7] [5]
Cheesecake Factory opened outside the mall on November 1, 2006. [8]
In December 2012, a Forever 21 Super Store opened on the lower level. [9] The lower level formerly housed a family entertainment center, Tilt, with an arcade and indoor miniature golf course.
On January 20, 2018, Abercrombie & Fitch closed at the mall. [10]
In August 2018, the Younkers store closed with the liquidation of its owner, Bon-Ton Stores. [11]
The first theater in the mall, the Fox Westroads, opened in November 1967. Originally a single screen theater, it was converted to the dual screen Fox Twin in 1976. [12] In 1969, a second theater, Six West, opened at the mall -- reportedly the first six-screen theater complex in the United States. [13] Both theaters were eventually purchased by AMC Theatres and marketed together as the Westroads 8. The theaters closed in 1997. [13]
In November 2008, Rave Motion Pictures opened a new 14-screen digital multiplex. It was acquired by AMC Theatres in 2013. [13]
On December 5, 2007, 19-year old Robert A. Hawkins entered the Von Maur anchor store with a rifle and opened fire. Nine people were killed, including the gunman, and four others were injured, all within Von Maur. [14] [15] The mall reopened on December 8, 2007 with increased security, [16] while Von Maur reopened December 20, 2007. [17]
On March 12, 2021, 21-year old Kenya Jenkins was detained for shoplifting from the J.C. Penney store by staff and security. Officer Jeffrey Wittstruck from the Omaha Police Department responded and Jenkins allegedly produced a .380 Taurus firearm, shooting Officer Wittstruck four times in the face, head, and shoulder. Jenkins immediately fled the J.C. Penney loss prevention office to a vehicle and left the property. Officer Joseph Kunza arrived soon after Jenkins fled the scene and, with the help of the Westroads Mall Security staff, gave aid to Wittstruck's gunshot wounds. Jenkins was apprehended after fleeing the scene after a high-speed chase on Westbound Interstate 80 that ended outside of Lincoln, NE. The .380 Taurus sidearm was located within the vehicle Jenkins had fled in. The mall was locked down and cleared by Law Enforcement and Security for a short time while the scene was investigated. No shots were fired in the main mall area or any other store. Wittstruck survived the shooting and is expected to recover. [18]
On April 17, 2021, two individuals exchanged gunfire on the first floor of the mall near the JCPenney store following a confrontation in line at a pretzel stand. The men fought, and after 16-year old Makhi Woolridge-Jones drew a gun 21-year old Trequez Swift kicked the gun and fled, he was hit twice in the back and died of his injuries three hours later. Swift's companion returned fire but did not hit anyone. Woolridge-Jones was sentenced to a minimum of 35 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder. [19] [20]

Westdale Mall was an enclosed super-regional shopping mall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. The two-level mall on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids is one of the city's two enclosed malls, along with Lindale Mall on the city's northeast side. By 2012, Westdale displayed some characteristics of a dead mall as two of its four anchor stores and an estimated 70 percent of inline stores have been vacated as of January 2013. At the beginning of 2013, local investor group A. Shapiro LLC purchased Westdale Mall. In January 2013, Frew Development Group, LLC leased the mall and its property from A. Shapiro, LLC. Frew Development is investing $90 million into the redevelopment of the mall, converting it to an open air destination and re-branding it as Westdale Town Center. In 2020, Frew Development Group, LLC acquired the ground lease from A. Shapiro, LLC and today is the sole owner of Westdale Town Center. The mall's anchor stores are JCPenney, Ross Dress for Less, U-Haul, Burlington, and PetSmart. Since 2018, Frew has developed a Tru by Hilton hotel, a Home2 by Hilton, a Boulder Tap House restaurant, and a US Veteran's Medical Clinic.

Charlestowne Mall was a shopping mall located in St. Charles, Illinois, United States. It was the second mall to serve the city after St. Charles Mall. Built by Wilmorite Properties, Charlestowne Mall opened for business in April 1991. Its original anchor stores were Kohl's, JCPenney, Sears, and Carson's. Regal Cinemas added a movie theater in 1999 which was sold to Classic Cinemas two years later, while JCPenney closed in 2000 and was converted in 2001 to Von Maur. The mall began experiencing a decline in tenancy in the 21st century due to its size, its location, and the opening of Geneva Commons in Geneva, Illinois in 2002. Although Wilmorite sold most of its shopping malls to Macerich in 2005, Charlestowne Mall was not included in the sale; it then changed ownership multiple times, with many of the following owners announcing plans to renovate it. None of these plans were executed, and many stores closed over time, including Sears in 2011 and Kohl's in 2016. The mall was entirely closed in 2017 except for the movie theater, Von Maur, and Carson's, which itself closed a year later. The vacant mall is owned by Urban Street Group.
Quail Springs Mall is a super-regional shopping mall and trade area located in far northern Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which opened on October 23, 1980. It contains three major department store anchors, a 24-screen AMC Theatre, Round One Entertainment, Blue Zoo Aquarium, and a total of 111 tenants comprising a total of approximately 1,115,000 square feet of gross leasable area. The mall is the focal point of a large area of recent residential and commercial development, and is located very close to one of Oklahoma City's most notoriously congested and difficult intersections which includes West Memorial Road, North Pennsylvania Avenue and The Kilpatrick Turnpike.
J.L. Brandeis & Sons, commonly referred to by Midwesterners as Brandeis, was a chain of department stores located in the Omaha, Nebraska area started by Jonas L. Brandeis in 1881. It was purchased by Younkers for $33.9 million in 1987, when the stores were converted to the Younkers name.
Crossroads Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located in Omaha, Nebraska, United States, at the intersection of 72nd and Dodge Streets. Originally opened in 1960 by Omaha's Brandeis department store, the mall has been home to several major chains, including Sears, Target and Dillard's before the store closed in 2008. The mall is now demolished, and is expected to be redeveloped as a mixed-use center, called The Crossroads, in 2025.

The mall receives more than 12,000,000 visitors annually, and features a "Kids Coliseum" play area. Oak View is attributed with sparking a development "boom" in its approximate neighborhood, which now includes several major retailers, restaurants, and three national hotel chains. The mall's anchor stores are Dillard's, JCPenney and The Rush Market. There is one vacant anchor that formerly housed a Sears.
Southroads Mall is an enclosed shopping mall at 1001 Fort Crook Road in Bellevue, Nebraska. Fort Crook Road was U.S. Route 75 until the early 1990s, replaced by the Kennedy Freeway.
On December 5, 2007, 19-year-old Robert Hawkins shot and killed eight people and wounded four others in a Von Maur department store at Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, before committing suicide by shooting himself in the head. It was the deadliest mass murder in Nebraska since the rampage of Charles Starkweather in 1958. It is also the deadliest mass shooting in Nebraska history.
