The fifth All-Africa Games were held in September 1991 in Cairo, Egypt. The 1991 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics were held at the Estadio Heriberto Jara Corona in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico between 26–28 July. At the 1991 Mediterranean Games, the athletics events were held at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. A total of 38 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 15 by female athletes. An exhibition heptathlon also took place, with Algeria's Yasmina Azzizi being the only athlete to compete. Several hundred athletes from fourteen Mediterranean nations took part in the competition. |
The 36th South American Championships in Athletics were held in Manaus, Brazil in late June 1991. The 3rd World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan between August 23 and September 1 and athletes from 167 countries participated in the event. Leroy Russel Burrell is an American former track and field athlete, who twice set the world record for the 100 m sprint.
Floyd Wayne Heard is a retired track and field sprinter from the United States, best known for setting the 1986 world's best year performance in the men's 200 m. He did so on 7 July 1986 at a meet in Moscow, Soviet Union, clocking 20.12s. A year later he won the title in the men's 200 m at the 1987 Pan American Games.

Darya Igorevna Klishina is a Russian long jumper.
Kalkidan Gezahegne is an Ethiopian middle distance runner who specializes in the 1500 metres.
Inga Kristina Gentzel was a Swedish runner, who won a bronze medal in the 800 m at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Shortly before the Olympics she set a new world record in this event, which was broken two weeks later, but remained a national record until 1943. Gentzel won the silver medal in the 1000 m at the 1926 Women's World Games.
Ellen Braumüller was a track and field athlete from Germany, who competed mainly in the javelin throw. She competed for her native country at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States, where she won the silver medal in the javelin throw. At the 1932 Olympics, she also competed in the relay, discus and high jump. Born in Berlin, she was the younger sister of Inge Braumüller.
