The Women's Long jump of the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships was held on 7 July 2011 in the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium of Kobe, Japan. In the women's long jump event, 14 athletes from the seven nations and one Chinese SAR (Hong Kong) participated. The gold medal was won by the Indian athlete Mayookha Johny with a best jump of 6.56 meters. Yuliya Tarasova of Uzbekistan, the current Asian leader of the event with a jump of 6.68 meters, failed to win a medal and finished fourth with a best jump of 6.37 meters. Another favorite, South Korean Jung Soon-Ok—with a personal best of 6.76 meters—also failed to finish on the podium. Her best jump of 6.12 meters was not even good enough for her to reach the last eight in the competition. [1] [2]

Long jump track and field event

The long jump is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a take off point. Along with the triple jump, the two events that measure jumping for distance as a group are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". This event has a history in the Ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympic event for men since the first Olympics in 1896 and for women since 1948.

2011 Asian Athletics Championships

The 19th Asian Athletics Championships were held in Kobe, Japan between July 7–10, 2011 at the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium. The tournament had 507 athletes from forty Asian nations competing in the 42 track and field events over the four-day competition.

Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium

Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium (神戸総合運動公園ユニバー記念競技場) is a multi-purpose stadium in Kobe Sports Park, Suma-ku, Kobe, Japan. It is currently used mostly for soccer matches. The stadium holds 36,000 people. It was built in 1985 for the 1985 Summer Universiade. It hosted the 2006 61st National Sports Festival of Japan main stadium. Local football club Vissel Kobe play some high attendance matches at the stadium.

Results

In the event, 14 athletes participated. The event held in two elimination rounds, in the first round all athletes were given three attempts to qualify for the next stage. On the basis of initial three attempts, top eight athletes qualified for the final round. Contingents were given another three chances, and on the basis of total six attempts made by athletes, top three placeholders were selected.

Final

The gold medal of the event was won by the Indian long jumper Mayookha Johny, with a best jump of 6.56 meters. Mayookha became only the second Indian to win gold in this event; the previous gold winner for India was Anju Bobby George, who had won gold medal in the long jump event of Asian Athletics Championships. [2] Anju achieved first position at Incheon, South Korea in 2005, with a jump of 6.65 meters. [2] [3] This first position of Mayookha, helped her with an automatic qualification (‘A' standard )—as the continental champion—for the World Championships, scheduled to take place on 27 August 2011 in Daegu, South Korea. [2] The silver medal of the event was won by the Chinese athlete Lu Minjia, with a best jump of 6.52 meters. Japanese Saeko Okayama, without making a single fault throughout the event, won a bronze medal, with a best performance of 6.51 meters. [4]

Mayookha Johny is an Indian track and field athlete from Kerala who specialises in long jump and triple jump. She holds the current Indian National record for triple jump with a mark of 14.11 m. She is the first Indian woman to cross the fourteen-metre mark.

Anju Bobby George Indian long jumper

Anju Bobby George is an Indian athlete. Anju Bobby George made history when she won the bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. With this achievement, she became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics jumping 6.70 m. She went on to win the gold medal at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2005, a performance she considers her best. Anju was upgraded to gold status from silver in the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo following the disqualification of Tatyana Kotova of Russia by the International Association of Athletics Federations, following the recent re-testing of the latter’s sample collected at the 2005 World Championship in Helsinki. She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2002. She had got 5th position with personal best score of 6.83 at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Yuki Nakata is a Japanese track and field athlete who competes in the women's heptathlon. She represented Japan at the Summer Olympics in 2004 and has competed twice at the World Championships in Athletics. She was the silver medallist at the 2009 Asian Athletics Championships and the 2010 Asian Games and has won the heptathlon at the East Asian Games and the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. With straight wins from 2002 to 2010, she is a nine time national champion and her best of 5962 points for the heptathlon is the national record for the event.

Anju Bobby George made history when she won the bronze medal in Women's long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. With this achievement, she became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics jumping 6.70 m. Till 2010 Milkha Singh was the only athlete to win an individual gold medal at a Commonwealth Games but at 2010 Commonwealth Games, Krishna Punia created history by winning the Women's discus throw gold medal for India after 52 years and as first woman to win a gold in athletics at Commonwealth Games. In the same edition of Commonwealth games Manjeet Kaur, Sini Jose, Ashwini Akkunji & Mandeep Kaur won the Women's 4 × 400 m (Relay) gold medal. At 2014 Commonwealth Games Vikas Gowda won the Men's Discus Throw gold medal.

Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko Israeli long jumper of Ukrainian descent

Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko is a former Ukrainian and a current Israeli triple jumper and long jumper.

The 2000 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the ninth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place in Damascus, Syria – the second consecutive time the city hosted the tournament, and a sixth hosting for Syria. A total of 42 athletics events were contested, 22 for men and 20 for women. Neither Morocco, Algeria nor Qatar—all regional powers in the sport—sent a team to the meeting, which impacted the overall quality of performances.

Lu Minjia is a Chinese female track and field athlete who competes in the long jump. She was the 2009 World Youth Champion and set an Asian youth record of 6.74 m that same year. After an Asian Junior title, she was runner-up at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships. She won gold medals at the 2012 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships and the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships.

Wang Wupin is a Chinese track and field athlete who competes in the long jump and triple jump. She holds personal bests of 6.58 m and 14.10 m for the events, respectively. She was the gold medallist in the triple jump at the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships.
