The World Athletics Relays will be held in China for the first time. They serve as a qualifying event for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

2010 Asian Para Games

The 2010 Asian Para Games, officially known as the I Asian Para Games, and commonly known as the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Para Games, was a parallel sport event for Asian athletes with disabilities held from 12 to 19 December 2010 in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Two weeks after the conclusion of the 16th Asian Games, It was the first edition of the Asian Para Games and the first in China.

Athletics at the 2010 Asian Games was held in Guangzhou, China from 21 to 27 November 2010. A total of 47 events were contested – 24 by men and 23 by women – matching the Olympic athletics programme. The 42 track and field events on the programme were hosted at the Aoti Main Stadium while the marathons and racewalking competitions took place around the city's University Town. Sixteen Asian Games records were broken during the seven-day competition.

Su Bingtian is a Chinese sprinter. He was the first ever Asian-born sprinter to break the 10-second barrier of the 100 metres event in track and field. Su's personal best of 9.83 seconds in the 100 metres makes him the current holder of the 100 m Asian record. In 2018, his personal best in the 60 metres of 6.42 seconds made him the holder of the 60 m Asian record and placed him within the top five all-time in the event. En route to his 100 metre personal best at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Su ran the fastest recorded 60 metre split of all time with a time of 6.29 seconds.

Momoko Takahashi is a Japanese track and field athlete who specialises in sprinting events. She has represented Japan twice at the World Championships in Athletics and won relay medals at the Asian Games in both 2006 and 2010. She was the 200 m gold medallist at the 2009 Asian Athletics Championships.

2019 IAAF World Relays Athletics Championship

The 2019 IAAF World Relays was held in Yokohama, Japan from May 11 to May 12, 2019. Two new events were established for 2019, both mixed events: the 2 × 2 × 400 m relay and the shuttle hurdles relay. The first event replaced the 4 × 800 m relay that featured at previous events.

2021 European Athletics Team Championships European athletics competition

The 2021 European Athletics Team Championships was held in four cities, on 29–30 May and on 19–20 June 2021. For the very first time, the ETC was not held on the same weekend for all leagues. At the European Athletics Team Championships medals are not awarded in individual events.
