6090 Aulis, provisional designation: 1989 DJ, is a Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 27 February 1989, by Belgian astronomer Henri Debehogne at ESO's La Silla Observatory in northern Chile. [1] The dark Jovian asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 18.5 hours. [10] It was named for the ancient Greek port Aulis, mentioned in the Iliad . [2]
Aulis is a dark Jovian asteroid orbiting in the leading Greek camp at Jupiter's L4 Lagrangian point, 60° ahead of the Gas Giant's orbit in a 1:1 resonance . It is also a non-family asteroid in the Jovian background population. [5]
It orbits the Sun at a distance of 5.0–5.6 AU once every 12 years and 3 months (4,470 days; semi-major axis of 5.31 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.06 and an inclination of 20° with respect to the ecliptic. [3] The body's observation arc begins with a precovery taken at Palomar Observatory in March 1954, almost 35 years prior to its official discovery observation. [1]
This minor planet was numbered on 19 September 1994 ( M.P.C. 23964). [11] On 14 May 2021, the object was named by the Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature (WGSBN) for the ancient Greek port Aulis, mentioned in the Iliad . In Greek mythology, it was the place where the Greek fleet gathered to set off for Troy and where King Agamemnon had sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia. [2]
Aulis is an assumed C-type asteroid. Its V–I color index of 0.98 is typical for that of most Jovian D-types, the dominant spectral type among the larger Jupiter trojans. [10]
Italian astronomer Stefano Mottola obtained two concurring rotational lightcurves from photometric observations. In June 1994, together with astronomer Anders Erikson, he constructed a lightcurve from observations made with the 0.9-meter Dutch telescope at La Silla, showing a rotation period of 18.60±0.05 hours and a brightness variation of 0.09±0.01 magnitude ( U=2+ ). In September 2009, he used the 1.2-meter reflector at Calar Alto Observatory, Spain, and measured a refined period of 18.476±0.007 hours with an amplitude of 0.16±0.01 in magnitude ( U=2+ ), confirming his previous result. [9] [10]
According to the space-based surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite IRAS, the Japanese Akari satellite, and the NEOWISE mission of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, Aulis measures between 59.57 and 81.92 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo between 0.046 and 0.087. [6] [7] [8] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link adopts an albedo of 0.0553 from IRAS, and derives a similar diameter of 74.53 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 9.4. [9]

4035 Thestor, provisional designation: 1986 WD, is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 68 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 22 November 1986, by Japanese astronomers Kenzo Suzuki and Takeshi Urata at the Toyota Observatory in Toyota, Japan. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 13.5 hours. Of more than half a million numbered minor planets, it has been the second-lowest numbered body without a name, until May 2021, when it was named after Thestor, a grandson of Apollo from Greek mythology.
2797 Teucer is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 110 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 June 1981, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. The dark D-type asteroid belongs to the 20 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 10.15 hours. It was named after the Greek hero and great archer, Teucer.
2920 Automedon is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 110 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa station of the Lowell Observatory on 3 May 1981. The dark D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 10.22 hours and belongs to the 30 largest Jupiter trojans. It was named after the ancient Greek hero Automedon, the charioteer of Achilles.
3564 Talthybius is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 73 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 15 October 1985, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. The dark D-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a relatively long rotation period of 40.59 hours. It was named after the Greek hero Talthybius, who was a herald during the Trojan War.
2207 Antenor is a large Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 92 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 19 August 1977, by Russian astronomer Nikolai Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj on the Crimean peninsula. The dark D-type asteroid is one of the 30 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 7.97 hours. It was named for the Trojan hero and sage Antenor, from Greek mythology. In October 2018, it was reported that Antenor is likely a binary system. If confirmed, it would be 5th known binary Jupiter trojan.
2363 Cebriones is a large Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 84 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 October 1977, by astronomers at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanking, China. The dark D-type asteroid is one of the 40 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 20 hours. It was named after Cebriones, Hektor's charioteer from Greek mythology.
7119 Hiera is a large Jupiter trojan and potentially slow rotator from the Greek camp, approximately 70 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 11 January 1989, by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory in California. The dark Jovian asteroid belongs to the 60 largest Jupiter trojans and has an estimated rotation period of at least 400 hours. It was named for the Amazon Hiera, who fought against the Greeks in the Trojan War. As with 624 Hektor, the naming for this Jovian asteroid was placed into the wrong camp.
2674 Pandarus is a large Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 98 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 27 January 1982, by astronomers at Harvard's Oak Ridge Observatory near Harvard, Massachusetts, in the United States. The likely elongated D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 8.48 hours and belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans. It was named after Pandarus from Greek mythology.

It was discovered during the third Palomar–Leiden Trojan survey on 16 October 1977, by Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten at Leiden, and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory in California. It is likely spherical in shape and has a longer-than-average rotation period of 27.68 hours. The assumed C-type asteroid is one of the 80 largest Jupiter trojans. It was named after Panthous (Panthoos) from Greek mythology.
