The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 (previously known as the ATP Championship Series, Single-Week, ATP Mercedes-Benz Super 9, Tennis Masters Series, and ATP Masters Series) is the third highest tier of annual men's tennis tournament after the four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals.
The Grand Slam tournaments, also called majors, are the four most important annual tennis events. They offer the most ranking points, prize money, public and media attention, the greatest strength and size of field, and greater number of "best of" sets for men. The Grand Slam itinerary consists of the Australian Open in mid January, the French Open around late May through early June, Wimbledon in June-July, and the US Open in August-September. Each tournament is played over a period of a fortnight. The Australian and United States tournaments are played on hard courts, the French on clay, and Wimbledon on grass. Wimbledon is the oldest, founded in 1877, followed by the US in 1881, the French in 1891, and the Australian in 1905. However, of these four, only Wimbledon was a major before 1924–25, when all four became designated Grand Slam tournaments. Skipping majors—especially the Australian Open because of the remoteness, the inconvenient dates and the low prize money—was not unusual before 1982.
The ATP Finals is the second highest tier of annual men's tennis tournament after the four Grand Slam tournaments.
Results in ATP Masters 1000 events earn players more world ranking points than regular tournaments, though not as many as Grand Slam events or the year-end ATP Finals. Up until 2007, most Masters Series finals were contested as best of five-set matches. Currently, all Masters Series matches (including the finals) are decided in best of three-set matches.
In singles, Rafael Nadal holds the record for the most titles with 33 since the Masters series began in 1990. [1] Novak Djokovic is the only player to have won all 9 Masters singles titles and became first player to complete Career Golden Masters. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, and Andy Murray have each won 7 different titles. Djokovic holds the record for the most singles titles in a year, winning 6 in 2015. Additionally, Djokovic and Nadal are the only two players to win four singles titles in a row and Nadal is the only person to complete the feat in the same calendar year when he won Madrid, Rome, Canada, and Cincinnati in 2013. Nadal and Djokovic together held all 9 Masters 1000 crowns starting with the 2013 Monte Carlo title through the 2014 Miami title, which was the first time that 2 players possessed all nine of the titles.
Rafael Nadal Parera is a Spanish professional tennis player, currently ranked world No. 2 in men's singles tennis by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
Novak Djokovic is a Serbian professional tennis player who is currently ranked world No. 1 in men's singles tennis by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
Andre Kirk Agassi is an American retired professional tennis player and former world No. 1 who was one of the sport's most dominant players from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s. Generally considered by critics and fellow players to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Agassi has been called the greatest service returner ever to play the game and was described by the BBC upon his retirement as "perhaps the biggest worldwide star in the sport's history". As a result, he is credited for helping to revive the popularity of tennis during the 1990s.
In doubles, the Bryan brothers (Bob and Mike) have won a record 38 doubles titles, all as a team. Daniel Nestor and the Bryan brothers have each won all 9 titles throughout their careers. The Bryans have won 6 titles in a single year once (2014) and 5 titles in a single year twice (2007 and 2013).
The Bryan Brothers are identical twin brothers Robert Charles "Bob" Bryan and Michael Carl "Mike" Bryan, American professional doubles tennis players, and are the most successful duo of all time. They were born on April 29, 1978, with Mike being the elder by two minutes. The Bryans have won multiple Olympic medals, including the gold in 2012 and have won more professional games, matches, tournaments and Grand Slams than any other men's pairing. They held the World No. 1 doubles ranking jointly for 438 weeks, which is longer than anyone else in doubles history, and have also enjoyed that World No. 1 ranking together for a record 139 consecutive weeks. They have finished as the ATP year-end number 1 doubles team a record 10 times. Between 2005 and 2006, they set an Open Era record by competing in seven consecutive men's doubles Grand Slam finals.
Robert Charles Bryan is an American professional tennis player. He has won twenty-three Grand Slam titles: 16 in men's doubles and 7 in mixed doubles. He turned professional in 1998. With his twin brother Mike, he has been the world No. 1 doubles player for much of the last several years, first achieving the top ranking in September 2003. In tennis, the term Big Four is a term used in journalism to refer to the quartet of men's singles players comprising Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. These players are considered dominant in terms of ranking and tournament victories, including Grand Slam tournaments and ATP Masters 1000 events, as well as the ATP Finals, the ATP World Tour 500 series and Olympic Games, having dominated the sport among them from 2004 onwards. Alternately, the concept of Big Three is used, omitting Murray, because of the gap in achievements between him and the other three.

At the French Open, he defeated Djokovic in an epic semifinal that went to 9–7 in the fifth set, before thrashing David Ferrer to win his 8th Roland Garros crown. He was then stunned by Steve Darcis in the first round of Wimbledon, in what would be his only defeat prior to the semifinals all season. Limping in the final set, many people thought his season was over, however a strong summer saw Nadal win Montreal, Cincinnati, and then the U.S. Open, thus clinching the Emirates Airlines U.S. Open Series. This granted him 3.6 million US dollars in prize money, the most money earned by a tennis player at a single tournament. A few days after the U.S. Open Final, he flew to Madrid to help Spain secure their World Group Playoff spot for 2014, with a victory against Sergiy Stakhovsky.
