The American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) is a professional association based in the United States that supports the scientific field of mass spectrometry. As of 2018, the society had approximately 10,000 members primarily from the US, but also from around the world. [2] [3] The society holds a large annual meeting, typically in late May or early June as well as other topical conferences and workshops. [4] The society publishes the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry.
The Society recognizes achievements and promotes academic research through four annual awards. The Biemann Medal and the John B. Fenn Award for a Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry both are awarded in recognition of singular achievements or contributions in fundamental or applied mass spectrometry, with the Biemann Medal being focused on individuals who are early in their careers. The Ronald A. Hites Award is awarded for outstanding original research demonstrated in papers published in the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. The Research Awards are given to young scientists in mass spectrometry, based on the evaluation of their proposed research.

The Society holds an annual conference in late May or early June as well as topical conferences (at Asilomar State Beach in California and Sanibel Island, Florida) and a fall workshop, which is also focused on a single topic. Conferences on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics have been held yearly since 1953. [7]
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), originally the Society of American Bacteriologists, is a professional organization for scientists who study viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae, and protozoa as well as other aspects of microbiology. It was founded in 1899. The Society publishes a variety of scientific journals, textbooks, and other educational materials related to microbiology and infectious diseases. ASM organizes annual meetings, as well as workshops and professional development opportunities for its members.
Klaus Biemann was an Austrian-American professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work centered on structural analysis in organic and biochemistry. He has been called the "father of organic mass spectrometry" but was particularly noted for his role in advancing protein sequencing with tandem mass spectrometry following pioneering work conducted in this area by Michael Barber.
The Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) is dedicated to advancing core and research biotechnology laboratories through research, communication, and education. ABRF members include over 2000 scientists representing 340 different core laboratories in 41 countries, including those in industry, government, academic and research institutions.
Donald F. Hunt is the University Professor of Chemistry and Pathology at the University of Virginia. He is known for his research in the field of mass spectrometry, he developed electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry. He has received multiple awards for his work including the Distinguished Contribution Award from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Thomson Medal from the International Mass Spectrometry Society.
David E. Clemmer is an analytical chemist and the Distinguished Professor and Robert and Marjorie Mann Chair of Chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he leads the Clemmer Group. Clemmer develops new scientific instruments for ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMS/MS), including the first instrument for nested ion-mobility time-of-flight mass spectrometry. He has received a number of awards, including the Biemann Medal in 2006 "for his pioneering contributions to the integration of ion mobility separations with a variety of mass spectrometry technologies."
Scott A. McLuckey is an American chemist, the John A. Leighty Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Purdue University. His research concerns the formation of ionized versions of large biomolecules, mass spectrometry of these ions, and ion-ion reactions.
Joshua Coon is a professor of chemistry and biomolecular chemistry and the inaugural holder of the Thomas and Margaret Pyle Chair at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and an affiliate of the Morgridge Institute for Research.
Kevin Downard is a British - Australian academic scientist whose research specialises in the improving responses to infectious disease through the application and development of mass spectrometry and other molecular approaches in the life and medical sciences. Downard has 35 years of experience in the field and has written over 140 lead-author scientific peer-reviewed journal publications, over 150 conference proceedings, and two books including a textbook for the Royal Society of Chemistry and the first book to be published on the role of mass spectrometry in the study of protein interactions.
Catherine Clarke Fenselau is an American scientist who was the first trained mass spectrometrist on the faculty of an American medical school; she joined Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1968. She specializes in biomedical applications of mass spectrometry. She has been recognized as an outstanding scientist in the field of bioanalytical chemistry because of her work using mass spectrometry to study biomolecules.
Kristina Håkansson is an analytical chemist known for her contribution in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry for biomolecular identification and structural characterization. Currently, she holds the position of Professor of Chemistry at University of Michigan. Her research focuses on mass spectrometry, primarily identification and characterization of protein posttranslational modifications by complementary fragmentation techniques such as electron-capture dissociation (ECD)/negative ion ECD (niECD) and infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) at low (femtomole) levels.
Vicki Wysocki is an American scientist. She is a professor and an Ohio Eminent Scholar at Ohio State University, and also the Director of the Campus Chemical Instrument Center.
The Biemann Medal is awarded annually by the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) to an individual early in his or her career in recognition of significant achievement in basic or applied mass spectrometry. It is named after professor Klaus Biemann.
Ying Ge is a Chinese-American biologist who is a Professor of Cell and Regenerative Biology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research considers the molecular mechanisms that underpin cardiac disease. She has previously served on the board of directors of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. In 2020 Ge was named on the Analytical Scientist Power List.
Richard M. Caprioli is an American chemist known for his contributions to mass spectrometry imaging.
Julia Laskin is the William F. and Patty J. Miller Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Purdue University. Her research is focused on the fundamental understanding of ion-surface collisions, understanding of phenomena underlying chemical analysis of large molecules in complex heterogeneous environments, and the development of new instrumentation and methods in preparative and imaging mass spectrometry.
Catherine E. Costello is the William Fairfield Warren distinguished professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genomics, and the director of the Center for Biomedical Mass Spectrometry at the Boston University School of Medicine.
Lingjun Li is a Professor in the School of Pharmacy and Department of Chemistry at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She develops mass spectrometry based tools to study neuropeptides, peptide hormones and neurotransmitters.
Barbara Seliger Larsen is a mass spectrometrist, with a career in instrumentations and applications of mass spectrometry in industry, and served on the board of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry for several terms.
Erin Shammel Baker is an American bioanalytical chemist, who specializes in the development of ion mobility-mass spectrometry instruments and in biological and environmental applications using these hybrid instruments. Baker is an expert in the research of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances analysis.
